citizen of the United States, and a resident of NewYork city, in the county-of New York and Stateof New York, haveinvented a-certain new and useful Portable Meat and Fruit Preserver, of which the following is a specification. 1

My invention relates to a new and useful portable fruit and meat preserver, by the use of which fruits, meats, &c.,will be preserved in good condition during transportation for long distances, and which may be adopted to act as a refrigerator during warm weather, or when used in southern countries, and from which the refrigerating attachment can be in a moment disengaged when its use is not required,

' thus leaving more space for the reception of the fruits, meats, 8w. In the drawings the same reference-letters designate the same parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan View of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the ice-box. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the invention, showing the non-conducting lining to the case A.

A is an external casing of wood,or of basket- .work made of rattan, reed, willow, or the like'suitable material, adapted to protect the internal metallic case from injury. It is provided with a cover, B, which is preferably hinged to the case A, and is provided with suitable thstenings, O O, which may beadapted to receive a padlock, or which may themselves be locks, engaging with suitable coun terpart loops or devices on the side of the case, as usual in such structures. The'case A is also provided with suitable handles, whereby it may be conveniently carried or moved.

D is an internal case, preferably of metal, and which preferably fits somewhatloosely within the exterior case, A, so thatit may be readily removed therefrom for the purposes of cleansing. It is preferably made ot'galvanized or other protected metal, if of iron, to prevent rust. Copper may be very advantageously used as the metal from which to make the case D. It is provided with acover, E, which is preferably provided with a sealing-strip, F, the more perfectly to retain the cold air.

The ice-box is loose so that it can be removed from the brackets I, and placed in the bottom of the case D, if desired. There is a hole, K, made in the bottom of the ice-box, through which any drip from the ice will escape, and I prefer to attach to the under side of the ice-box surrounding the water-escape hole, a short pipe, 70, Fig. 2, which will enter the upper end of a pipe, L, attached to the case D at the place where the ice-box will ordinarily rest, so that the drip from the ice: box may escape through the pipe L, and pass down through the bottom of the case D, and out through the wicker-work of the outer case A, or through suitably-located holes made in the bottom of the case A, if it'be made of wood. Since, however, the ice is usuallywrapped in cloths, any provision for the escape of the drip will not usually be needful,

the cloths holding the moisture which comes few small holes, to allow the escape ofthe wa- 1 3 ter, if desired.

N, Fig. 3, is a lining of felt, paper, or other suitable non-conductor of heat and cold, which is placed between the outer case, A, and the inner case, D. 7 It may be attached in any suitable manner to either of the cases; but I prefer to attach it to the inside of the outer case,-

A, this being more convenient in manufac-I ture, and also so that when the inner case is lifted out for the purposes of cleansing this lining may remain in the case A. lts function is to aid the refrigeration or preservation of the contents of the case D by preventing the escape of the cold air. I prefer to line the inside of the cover B also with this nonconductor. I have not shown it so lined in the drawings,the better to display the basketwork of the cover. This lining is perforated on the bottom for the escape of the water, and a hole is made therein opposite the lower end of the pipe L for the same purpose.

It will be observed that the ice-box, being independent, can be entirely removed from the case D when the weather is such that refrigeration of its contents is not necessary, thus affording more space within the case D. I do not limit myself to an independent icebox, however. It may be be permanently fastened within the case D and at any desired place therein.

I do not lay claim to a water-proof bag of any kind placed between the outer case and the inner metallic case or any other waterproof material located at any part of the apparatus for the purpose of preventing water from entering the outer case, since such waterproof material wouldlikewise prevent the escape from the apparatus of such moisture as might accumulate from the melting of the ice; and this is not my intent, but the contrary.

Having described my invention, Iclaim 1. A portable fruit and meat preserver consisting of an outer stengthening and protecting case, A, provided with a cover, an inner metallic case, D, provided with a cover separate and distinct from the cover of the outer case, and an icebox, G, located within the inner case, D, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. A portable fruit and meat preserver consisting of an outer strengthening and protecting case,A, provided with a cover and handles, aninner metallic case,D,provided with a cover, an independent movable ice-box, G, placed within the case D, and supported on brackets I at the upper part of the case D, substantiallyv as and tor the purposes set forth.

3. The combination, in a portable fruit and meat preserver, of a basket-work outer case, A, provided with a cover and with handles, an independent interior metallic case, D, removable from the case A, and an ice-box, G, provided with a cover and placed within the case D, the cover for the ice-box being attached thereto and separate and distinct from the covers of the outer and inner case, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. A fruit and meat preserver consisting of an exterior strengthening and protecting case, A, provided with a cover, an interior case, D, provided with a cover, an icebox, G, placed within the case D, and provided with escapepipe K and water-leader L, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. A portable meat and fruit preserver consisting of an external strengthening and protecting case, A, provided with handles, and having a cover provided with fastening devices, an internal metallic case, D, removable from-the outer case, A, and provided with a cover, an independent removable ice-box, G, provided with a cover and having a water-escape pipe, K, and slat-work placed in the bottom of the case D, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

6. The combination, in a meat and fruit preserver, of an internal metallic case, D, an independent movable ice-box, G, and brackets I, for supporting the ice-box in any desired position in the case D, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

7. The combination, in a portable fruit and meat preserver, of an internal metallic case, p D, provided with a perforated bottom and slat-work in the bottom thereof, whereby the contents of the case will be held up from the bottom thereof, and an external perforated protecting and strengthening case, A, provided with a cover, and handles whereby the same may be easily carried or moved, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

8. The combination, in a portable meat and fruit preserver, of a basket-work external case, A, provided with handles, and a cover which surrounds and protects an internal metallic case, D, also provided with a cover, for the reception of the meat and fruits, and an independent removable ice-box provided with a cover, and placed within the interior case,

D, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

9. A portable fruit and meat preserver consisting of an external basket-work case, A,pr0- vided with a cover and handles, surrounding an internal metallic case, D, provided with a cover, an independent removable ice-box provided with a cover and placed within the case D, and a slatwork frame, M, placed within the bottom of the case D, whereby its contents will beheld up from the bottom of the case D, substantially as and for the purposes sct forth.
