Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE@ VILLIAM W. ARMINGTON, OE PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
TOY BALL-TH ROWI NG DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,843, dated .August 4, 1885.
Application filed August 25, 1884. No model.)
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, WrLLIAM W. ARMING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Ball-Throwing Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description oi' the invention', such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
rIhe invention consists in the arrangements and combinations of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate similar parts in each of the iigures, Eig. lisaplan of the toy, and Fig. 2 is aside View of the same. Fig. 3 is a View of a ball adapted for use with said toy.
In carrying` out the invention, I provide a short-handled rod or stick, a, and to the end opposite the handle v'b thereof I secure a hoop or loop, c, preferably of wire, towliich is attached a shallow bag or ball-receptacle, d, of netting or other textile material, said hoop lying in, or approximately in, a plane with said rod a.
On the under side of the rod is affixed or formed a stud, e,`the end of which is bifurcated to provide a secure fulcrumal seat for a lever, f. Said lever is held in said seat by the pivotal pin g. The rod a is perforated at a point adjacent to the back end of the lever, and in the perforation is arranged a sliding rod, 7i, on one end of which, above the rod a, is secured a handle, i, for limiting the downward movement of said rod h, and drawing the same up prior to striking a blow with the lever. The lower end of the rod h is attached loosely to the lever, so that the latter will not bind when operated. The said rod h is also bifurcated to receive said lever. The opposite end of the lever is provided withv a head or disk, j, which lies beneath the center of the bag or netting, and is adapted to strike and throw the ball 7c lying therein. y
In operating the toy, the ball is placed in its receptacle and naturally falls to a central position in the path of the heady', because of the shape of said receptacle. The handled rod or bar It is then given a sharp depressing blow, which throws the lever and heady' thereof upward, as shown in dotted outline, striking the ball and sending it into the air. After this the boy or operator may try to catch the descending ball,in the receptacle, the peculiar relation of the handle and hoop allowing the same to be readily accomplished with the aid of a little judgment and skill.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new isl. The combination, with rod a and shallow bag attached thereon, of a lever arranged on said rod and adapted to project a ball lying in said bag, substantially as set forth and shown.
2. In combination in a toy, a handle, a hoop, and bag to receive a ball, and a lever connected to said handle having an operating end arranged beneath said bag and adapted to be raised to strike a ball lying in said bag, substantially as set forth. Y
3. In combination, the handled rod, a bag vsecured at the end opposite the handle thereof, a lever fulcrumed on the under side of said rod, and a rod, h, or plunger adapted to operate said lever, all said parts being arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth. l
4. In combination, the perforated rod a, the hoop adjusted at the end thereof, a bag, a lever, a fulcrumal stud, and a rod, h, having a handle, i, and attached to the lever to throw the same, said parts being arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In Vtestimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day oi' August, 1884.
' IVILLIAM WV. ARMINGTON.
