HENRY PHILIP DREW, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COCK FOR GAS AND WATER FITTINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 811,650, dated February 3, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY PHILIP DREW, 0f the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cocks for Gas and WVater Fittings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference isto be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, the plug being shown in section.
The object of this invention is to promote security in the use of cocks for gas and water fittings.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Ais the stock of the cock, which has a perforation, A, formed longitudinally through it for the passage of the gas or liquid.
In the inner or rear end of the stock A is formed a female screw, to receive the end of the gas or water pipe B, and its outer or forward end is provided with a gas-burner or a nozzle, according as the cock is intended for gas or water fittings.
Through the stock A is formed a perforation, 0, to receivethe plug D, which perforation is made tapering and with its smaller end downward, asshown in Fig. 1. In the smaller end of the plug D is formed a female screw to receive the stem of the thumb-piece E, which is locked from turning by the screwpin F passing through the said plug and the stem of the said thumb-piece. The end of the screw-pin F projects to strike against the shoulder G, formed upon the lower side of the stock A, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, to limit the rotary movement of the plug D. The larger or upper end of the perforation O is closed by a cap-plug, H, screwed into it, as
shown in Fig. 1. The larger or upper end of the plug D has a recess, 1, formed in it, from the lower or inner part of which a perforation, J, leads out through the forward side of the said plug.
In the upper part of the stock A, at the rear side of the perforation G, is formed a recess, K, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The recess I also serves as a seat for the lower end of the spiral spring L, the upper end of which rests against the cap-plug H. The spring L is designed to assist the weight of the plug D in holding the said plug D to its seat, and in taking up the wear. When the cock is open, the gas or liquid enters the said cock through the rear part of the perforation A, and passes through the recess K into the recess 1, thence through the perforation J, and escapes th rough the forward part of the perforation A. The cock is closed by turning the perforation J away from the forward part of the perforation A, and if the stoppin F were not used, or were brokenoff, it would be necessary to turn the plug D through an entire revolution before the cock would be opened, unless the said plug was stopped and turned back.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article of manufacture, a cock for gas and water fittings, consisting, essentially, of the stock A, having the longitudinal passage A, downwardtapering perforation 0,, and recess K in the rear inner wall of the said perforation (-3, as shown, the tapering plug D, having a recess, I,'in its upper larger end opening into the upper part of perforation 0 and the recess K, and a lateral perforation, J, adapted to register with the passage A, the spring L,'the screw-cap H, fitting into the top of the perforation O, the spring L bearing against the under side of plug H and the bottom of recess 1, and the thumbpiece E on the lower end of the plug D, substantially as set forth.
