(Cl. 297-159) This invention relates to collapsible articles of furniture and more particularly to a table and bench assembly provided with foldable legs.
Lightweight collapsible tables and benches are known. However, difiiculty has been experienced in that in view of the publics habit of overloading such furniture, the furniture has been subjected to the possibility of collapsing while under load and the size and weight of the component parts have been increased, thus resulting in bulky pieces of furniture. Moreover, it is frequently desirable to use a folding table in combination with folding chairs or benches such as when the table and chairs are to be used as a bridge table or as a picnic table. It is, of course, desirable that such collapsible pieces of furniture fold into the smallest possible size in order to facilitate thestorage of the furniture.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an improved collapsible table which overcomes the aforementioned difficulties.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an improved collapsible combination table and bench assembly.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved collapsible table and bench assembly which is strong, yet light in weight, economical to manufacture, and which may be folded, when not in use, into the smallest possible size.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the following description proceeds and the features of novelty which characterize the invention will be pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification.
Briefly stated, according to the present invention, there is provided a collapsible table including a table top and a plurality of supporting legs. The supporting legs are each connected to the table top by an over-center connecting link means which interconnects one end of each of the individual ones of the legs to the underside of the table top. A rigid brace is provided which is pivotally connected to each of the legs at a point remote from the table top.
In accordance with another feature of the present invention, a bench is provided which is operatively associated with the table so as telescopically to be positioned relative to the table top when the table is folded, and which is operatively connected to the legs intermediate their length so as to move downwardly away from the table top when the legs are moved to the open position.
It will be appreciated that, according to the present invention, there is provided the improved collapsible table and bench assembly which is light yet strong, and which, due to the telescoping of the table top and bench, is foldable into a small compact size, and which permits the table top and bench to be formed from the same piece of material.

Referring now to the drawings, and specifically to FIGS. 1 and 4 thereof, there is illustrated a collapsible table and bench assembly generally illustrated at 10 and including a table top or table portion 12, and a bench or seat portion 14. The table assembly 10 is additionally provided with a plurality of swingable supporting legs 16, here illustrated as four, interconnected intermediate their length by a rigid cross brace or brace member 18. As herein illustrated, the brace member 18 includes a pair of rigidly connected crossarms 18a and 18b interconnected at their mid-point and having each of their ends pivotally connected to a respective one of the legs 16. In order to provide for pivotally interconnecting the brace member 18 and the legs 16, each of the legs 16 is provided with a hinge fitting 20 of general U-shape positioned around a respective one of the legs 16, and a pivot or hinge pin 22 pivotally interconnects the ends of the legs of the hinge member 20 with the ends of the arms 18a and 1811.
In order to interconnect the upper end of the legs 16 with the table top 12, there is provided a plurality of over-center connecting assemblies 24, each of which inchides a fitting 26 secured to the underside of the table top 12 by a plurality of fasteners 28 (FIG, 3) and provided at its ends with a pair of depending ears or lugs 30. Moreover, each of the over-center means 24 additionally includes a pair of over-center connecting links 32, each of the links in each pair having one end thereof pivotally mounted to one of the lugs 30 by pivot means such as a pivot pin 34, and having the other end thereof connected to the upper end of a respective one of said legs 16 by pivot means such as a pivot pin 36. In this manner there is provided the plurality of over-center connecting links 32 which have one end pivotally connected to the table top 12 through the pivot pins 34 and which have the other end pivotally connected to a respective one of the legs 16 through the pivot pins 36, and which are swingable between a first or table folded position, as illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3, wherein the pivoted end of the legs 16 are positioned toward the center of the table top 12, to a second or table unfolded position, over-center from the folded position, and against the bottom of the table top with the pivoted end of the legs 16 being positioned outwardly from the center of the table top 12 toward the outer edge thereof.
It will be appreciated from the above description that the geometry of the described table is such as to allow the legs :16 to fold flatly against the underside of the table top 12 when the table is in a folded position. Briefly, this is accomplished when the length of the legs 16 between the pivot pins 22 and 36, as indicated by the distance D in FIG. 4, plus one-half the distance between opposite ones of the pivots 34, as represented by the distance E of FIG. 4 radially from the center of the table top 12, is equal to one-half the length of a crossarm 18a or 1812 plus the length of a connecting link 32, projected 3 on a radial line from the center of the table, as indicated by the distance F in FIG. 4. In order to provide that the bench 14 surrounds the outside of the table top 12 but is disposed in the same plane when the assembly is folded, as best illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3, the bench'14 is operatively associated with the legs 16 intermediate their length so as to move downwardly away from the table top 12 when the legs are in their unfolded position, as illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 4. This is accomplished by the provision of a plurality of bench connecting assemblies, generally illustrated at 38, and including a first bracket or fitting 40 secured to the underside of the bench 14 by a plurality of fasteners 42 (FIG. 3) and each provided at its ends with a pair of downwardly extending lug or ear portions 44. Each connecting assembly 38 additionally includes a pair of bench connecting links 46 pivotally connected to the lug portions 44 by a pivot pin 4% and pivotally connected to the legs 16 intermediate their length by a pivot pin 50.
The geometry of the bench 14 and the connecting assemblies 38 is such that when the table is in its folded position, the seat 14 is coplanar with the table top 12 and outwardly therefrom. To this end, as clearly represented in FIG. 3, the link 46 is of a length such that the projected length of the link 46,- as represented by G in FIG. 4, plus one-half the length of the connecting arms 1811 or 18b is equal to one'half the radial distance between opposite pivots 4 8, as indicated at H in FIG. 4, plus the length of the legs 16 between the pivots 5e and 22, as indicated at K in FIG. 4. In this manner the bench 14 will lie coplanar with the table top 12 when the legs 16 are in their folded position.
In order to provide for seating of the legs 16 on a floor or other surface, the lower ends of the legs 16 may be provided with any suitable means for engaging the floor, such as a small flat plate 52 serving as a ferrule.
Although the table top 12 and the bench 14 in the embodiments of FIGS. 1 to 4 are illustrated as being square in shape, it will be appreciated that they may have any suitable configuration. For example, there is illustrated in the embodiment of FIGS. 5 and 6 a coll apsible table top and bench assembly 116 in accordance with the present invention and circular in configuration. The collapsible table [and bench assembly 110 includes a table top or topportion 112 and a bench or seat portion 114. The assembly is additionally provided with a plurality of swingable supporting legs 116, here illustrated as three in number, and interconnected at their ends remote from the table top 112 by a rigid ring or torus-shaped brace member 118 which is pivotally connected to the respective legs 116. In order to provide for pivotally interconnecting the brace member 118 and the legs 116, there is provided hinge means 120 including a pivot or hinge pin 122 which pivotally interconnects the brace means 118 and the legs 116.
In order to interconnect the upper end of the legs 116 with the table top 112, there is provided a plurality of over-center connecting assemblies 124 (FIG. 6), which are identical to the over-center connecting means 24 illustrated and described in the embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 4, and, briefly, which each includes a fitting 126 secured to the underside of the table top 112 and provided at its ends with a pair of depending ears or lugs v130. Moreover, each of the over-center means 124 additionally in cludes a pair of over-center connecting links 132, each of which is pivotally mounted to one of the lugs .130 by pivot means, such as the pivot pin 134, and having its other end connected to the upper end of a respective one of the legs 116 by pivot means, such as a pivot pin 136. It will be appreciated that the over-center means 124 are effective to provide for swinging of the legs 116 between a first or table folded position, as illustrated in FIG. 6, wherein the pivoted end of the legs 116 is positioned toward the center of the table top 112, to a second, or table unfolded position, over-center from the folded position, and against the bottom of the table top with the pivoted end of the legs 116 being positioned outwardly from the center of the table top 112 toward the outer edge thereof. Moreover, it will further be appreciated from the above description that the geometry of the described table is such as to provide for the legs 116 to fold flatly against the underside of the table top 112 when the table is in a folded position, as best illustrated in FIG. 6. Suitable proportions of the members are apparent from the above-detailed description; however, briefly, the length of the legs between their pivot pins 122 and 136 plus the radial projected distance from the center of the table top 112 to the pivots 134, as represented by M (FIG. 6), is equal to the radius of the brace member 113 measured to the pivot pins 122, plus the projected length of a connecting link 132.
In order to provide for a bench associated with the table portion 112, the bench 114 is positionable telescopically outside of the table top 112 when the table is folded, as illustrated in FIG. 6, and is operatively associated with the legs 116 intermediate their length so as to move downwardly away from the table top 112 when the legs are in their unfolded position. This is readily accomplished by the provision of a plurality of bench connecting assemblies 138, identical to the assemblies 38 described in connection with the embodiment of FIGS. l to 4 and which, briefly, include a fitting 140 secured to the underside of the bench 1'14 and provided at each end with a pair of downwardly extending lug or car portions 144. Each connecting assembly 138 additionally includes a pair of bench connecting links 146 pivotally connected to the lug portions 144 by a pivot pin 148 and pivotally connected to the legs 116 intermediate their length by a pivot pin 150.
It will be seen that the geometry of the bench 114 and the connecting assemblies 138 is such that when the table is in its folded position, illustrated in FIG. 6, the bench 114 is coplanar with the table top 112 and outwardly therefrom. To this end, as clearly shown in FIG. 6, the link 146 is of a length such that the projected length of the link 146, projected against a radial line, plus the radius of the brace member 118 measured to the pivot pins 122 is equal to the radial distance from the center of the table to the pivot pins 148 plus the length of the legs 116 between the pivot pins 150 and 122. In this manner the bench 114 will lie coplanar with the table top 112 when the legs 116 are in their folded position.
Moreover, in order to provide for the smallest folded compact size of the assembly 110, the ring-shaped brace member 113 is positioned at the bottom of the legs 116, serving as a skid or ferrule to engage the floor or other surface, and is positioned outwardly of the legs 116 so that when the assembly 116 is in its folded position the brace member 118 will be telescopically positioned outwardly from the bench 114 as illustrated in FIG. 6.
Although the embodiments of FIGS. 1 to 4, and FIGS. 5 and 6, illustrate table and bench assemblies wherein the table top and the bench are connected to the legs of the assembly in similar manner, it will be appreciated that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. To this end, there is illustrated in FIGS. 7 and 8 a table wherein the bench thereof is secured to the legs by a modified assembly. Referring now to the embodiment of FIGS. 7 and 8, there is illustrated a collapsible table and bench assembly 210 which includes a table top or table portion 212 and a bench or seat portion 214. Table assembly 210 is provided with a plurality of swingable supporting legs 216, here illustrated as four, and interconnected intermediate their length by a rigid cross brace or brace member 218. As herein illustrated, the brace member 218 includes a pair of rigidly connecting crossarms 218a and 218k secured together at their mid-points and each formed of a pair of spaced apart links 2180 and 218d, and 218e and 218), respectively, each pair forming a sort of yoke construction. Moreover, each of the crossarms 218a and 21821 are pivotally connected at their ends to opposite ones of the legs 216 by a hinge or pivot pin 222, the respective legs 216 being mounted between the links 2180 and 218d and the links 2182 and 218 forming the crossarms 218a and 21812, respectively, for swinging movement relative to the brace member 213, as best illustrated in FIG. 7.
In order to interconnect the upper end of the legs 216 with the table top 212, there is provided a plurality of over-center connecting assemblies 224 which are similar to that illustrated in the previously described embodiments. Briefly, as herein illustrated, each of the overcenter assemblies 224 includes a fitting 226 secured to the underside of the table top and provided at its ends with a pair of depending ears or lugs 230, and additionally includes a pair of over-center connecting links 232, each of the links in each pair having one end thereof pivotally mounted to one of the lugs 230 by pivot means such as a pivot pin 234 and having the other end thereof connected to the upper end of a respective one of the legs 2 16 by pivot means such as a pivot pin 236. In this manner there is provided a plurality of over-center connecting links 23 2 which have one end pivotally connected to the table top 212 through the pivot pin 234 and which have the other end pivotally connected to a respective one :of the legs 216 through the pivot pins 236; and which are swingable between a first or table folded position, as illustrated in FIG. 7, wherein the pivoted end of the legs 216 are positioned toward the center of the table top 212, to a second or table unfolded position, over-center from the folded position, and against the bottom of the table top with the pivoted end of the legs 2% being positioned outwardly from the center of the table top 212 toward the outer edge thereof.
It will be appreciated, from the above description, that the geometry of the table is such as to allow the legs 216 to fold flatly against the underside of the table top 212 when the table is in a folded position. The proportions of the members are similar to that of the heretofore described embodiments and are not herein described in detail.
In order to provide a bench associated with the table portion 212, the bench 214 is positionable telescopically outside of the table top 212 when the table 218 is folded, as best illustrated in FIG. 7, and is operatively associated with the legs 216 intermediate their length so as to move downwardly away from the table top 212 when the legs 216 are in their unfolded position, as illustrated in FIG. 8. This may readily be accomplished by outwardly extending the crossarms 218a and 218b of the brace means 218 beyond the legs 216, the hinge or pivot pin 222 being connected to the crossarms 218a and 21% intermediate their lengths. The bench portion 214 may then be secured directly to the overhanging portion of the crossarms 218a and 21821 and positioned outwardly of the table top 212. If desired, a pivotable sliding link assembly 238 may be provided to additionally interconnect the overhanging portion of the crossarrns 218a and 218/) and, therefore, the bench portion 214 with the respective legs 216. Each of the connecting links includes a pair of spaced links 240 spaced on respective sides of their associated legs 215 and received between the spaced apart links 218e, 218d, and 218e, 213 forming the brace member 218. Moreover, each of the connecting links 240 has one end pivotally mounted to the overhanging portion of the crossarms 218a and 21811 by a pivot pin 242. Additionally, each of the connecting links 240 is pro vided with a longitudinal slot 244 and each of the legs 216 is provided with a cooperating pin 246 slidably received in the slot 244. Swinging of the legs 218 between the folded and unfolded positions is etfective to rotate the links 240 about the pivot pin 242 while the pin 246 slides along the slot 244.
In order to provide for seating of the legs 216 on a floor or other surface, the lower ends of the legs 216 are provided with suitable means for engaging the floor, such as a small flat plate 252 serving as a ferrule.
It will be appreciated that the table and bench assembly according to the present invention is strong, yet light in weight, and is readily foldable into a very compact shape. When folded, the legs do not project beyond the outer dimensions of the bench. In this respect it will be noted that in the embodiment of FIGS. 7 and 8 the legs are substantially within a circumscribed square containing the table and bench assembly. As the legs fold closely against the underside of the table top and bench, the table and bench assembly occupy a minimum space during shipping as well as during storage, and provide for convenient handling thereof. Moreover, as the table top and bench are concentric when folded, the table top and bench can be formed from the same piece of material, substantially eliminating Waste.
While certain preferred embodiments of the invention have been described by way of illustration, many modifications will occur to those skilled in the art. It is, therefore, intended in the appended claims to cover all such modifications as fall within the true spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:
\1. A collapsible table and bench assembly comprising a one-piece table top, a plurality of supporting legs, rigid brace means pivotally connected to each of said legs remote from said table top and interconnecting said legs, a plurality of over-center connecting links having one end pivotally connected to said table top and the other end pivotally connected to one end of a respective one of said legs and movable between a first position against the bottom of said table top with said one end of said legs being positioned against the bottom of said table top and a second position against the bottom of said table top with said one end of said legs being positioned outwardly of said first position against the bottom of said table top, said legs being swingable between a first position corresponding to the first-mentioned first position and longitudinally against the bottom of said table top to .a second position corresponding to the first-mentioned second position and supporting said table, and one-piece seat means telescopically positionable relative to said table top outwardly thereof when said legs are in their said first position and operatively associated with said legs intermediate the length of said legs to move downwardly relative to said table top when said legs are in their said second position.
2. A collapsible table and bench assembly comprising a table top, a plurality of supporting legs, rigid brace means pivotally connected to each of said legs remote from said table top and interconnecting said legs, a plurality of over-center connecting assemblies interconnecting said tabletop and one end of said legs, said legs being swingable between a folded position against the underside of said table top with said one end thereof toward the center of the table top to an unfolded position supporting said table with said one end of said legs outwardly from said folded position, and seat means telescopically positionable relative to said table top when said legs are in their folded position and operatively associa-ted with said legs to move downwardly relative to said table top when said legs are in their said unfolded position.
3. A collapsible table and bench assembly 'as set forth in claim 2 above wherein said brace means interconnects said legs intermediate their length.
4. A collapsible table and bench assembly as set forth in claim 2 above wherein said brace means interconnects the other end of said legs.
5. A collapsible table and bench assembly as set forth in claim 2 :above wherein said seat means is operatively associated with said legs by a plurality of links each having one end'pivotally connected to said seat means and having the other end pivotally connected to one of said legs. 7
6. A collapsible table and bench assembly as set forth in claim 2 above wherein said seat means is operatively associated with said legs through a portion of said brace means which overhangs said legs.
7. A collapsible table and bench assembly as set forth in claim 2 above wherein brace means is torus-shaped and is positioned outwardly of said legs and is positionable telescopically outwardly of said seat means when said assembly is in a folded position.
8. A collapsible table and bench assembly comprising a table top, a plurality of supporting legs, bnace means pivotally connected to each of said legs remote from said table top and interconnecting said legs, a plurality of over-center connecting means interconnecting said table top and one end of a respective one of said legs, and seat means telescopically positionable relative to said table top when said legs are in a folded position and operatively associated with said legs to move downwardly relative to said table top when said legs are in an unfolded position.
9. A collapsible table and bench assembly as set forth in claim 8 :above wherein said brace means interconnects said legs intermediate their length.
10. A collapsible table and bench assembly as set forth in claim 8 above wherein said brace means interconnects the other end of said legs.
11. A collapsible table and bench assembly as set forth in claim 8 above wherein said seat means is operatively associated with said legs by a plurality of links each having one end pivotally connected to said seat means and having theother end pivotally connected to one of said legs.
12. A collapsible table and bench assembly as set forth in claim 8 above wherein said seat means is operatively associated with said legs through a portion of said brace means which overhangs said legs.
13. A collapsible table and bench assembly as set forth in claim 8 above wherein brace means is torus-shaped and is positioned outwardly of said legs and is positionabletelescopically outwardly of said seat means when said assembly is in a folded position.
14. A collapsible table and bench assembly comprising a table top; a plurality of supporting legs; rigid brace means pivotally connected to each of said legs remote from said table top and interconnecting said legs; a plurality of over center connecting links having one end pivotally connected to said said table top and the other end pivotally connected to one end of a respective one of said legs and movable between a first position against the bottom of said table top with said one endof said legs being positioned against the bottom of said table top and a second position against the bottom of said table top with said one end of said legs being positioned outwardly of said first position against the bottom of said table top; said legs being swingable between a first position corresponding to the first-mentioned first position and longitudinally against the bottom of said table top to a second position corresponding to the first-mentioned second position and supporting saidtable; the length of said legs between their pivot points with said connecting links and said brace means plus the radial distance from the center of the table to the pivot point between the connecting links and the table top being equal to the radial length of the brace means measured from the center of the table to the pivot point between the brace means and the legs; one-piece seat means telescopically positionable relative to said table top outwardly thereof when said legs are in their said first position and operatively associated with said legs intermediate the length of said legs to move downwardly relative to said table top when said legs are in their said second position; and link means pivotally interconnecting the underside of said seat means and said legs; the length of said link means between its respective pivot points plus the said radial length-of the said brace means being equal to the radial distance from the center of said table to the pivot point between said link means and said seat means plu the length of the legs from their pivot point with said brace means to their pivot point with said link means.
15. A collapsible table comprising a table top, a plurality of supporting legs, a plurality of rigid links one for each leg, each link having one end thereof pivotally connected to one end of an associated leg, means for pivotally connecting the other end of each link to the underside of said table top, the pivot point of said links relative to said table being spaced from one another and rigid brace means pivotally connected to each of said legs at a position on said legs remote from the ends of said legs connected to said links, said links each having two operative positions both generally parallel with and against the underside of said table top, the first of said operative positions of each link being inwardly from its associated pivot point with said table and with said legs generally parallel with said table top whereby said table is in a collapsed condition, the second of said operative positions of each link being outwardly from its associated pivot point with said table and with said legs projecting from said table top whereby the latter is supported on said legsl.
16. The collapsible table of claim 15 having four legs and wherein when said links are in the second of said operative positions the ends of the legs adjacent the table top are adjacent the periphery of said table top.

Claims (1)

1. A COLLAPSIBLE TABLE AND BENCH ASSEMBLY COMPRISING A ONE-PIECE TABLE TOP, A PLURALITY OF SUPPORTING LEGS, RIGID BRACE MEANS PIVOTALLY CONNECTED TO EACH OF SAID LEGS REMOTE FROM SAID TABLE TOP AND INTERCONNECTING SAID LEGS, A PLURALITY OF OVER-CENTER CONNECTING LINKS HAVING ONE END PIVOTALLY CONNECTED TO SAID TABLE TOP AND THE OTHER END PIVOTALLY CONNECTED TO ONE END OF A RESPECTIVE ONE OF SAID LEGS AND MOVABLE BETWEEN A FIRST POSITION AGAINST THE BOTTOM OF SAID TABLE TOP WITH SAID ONE END OF SAID LEGS BEING POSITIONED AGAINST THE BOTTOM OF SAID TABLE TOP AND A SECOND POSITION AGAINST THE BOTTOM OF SAID TABLE TOP WITH SAID ONE END OF SAID LEGS BEING POSITIONED OUTWARDLY OF SAID FIRST POSITION AGAINST THE BOTTOM OF SAID TABLE TOP, SAID LEGS BEING SWINGABLE BETWEEN A FIRST POSITION CORRESPONDING TO THE FIRST-MENTIONED FIRST POSITION AND LONGITUDINALLY AGAINST THE BOTTOM OF SAID TABLE TOP TO A SECOND POSITION CORRESPONDING TO THE FIRST-MENTIONED SECOND POSITION AND SUPPORTING SAID TABLE, AND ONE-PIECE SEAT MEANS TELESCOPICALLY POSITIONABLE RELATIVE TO SAID TABLE TOP OUTWARDLY THEREOF WHEN SAID LEGS ARE IN THEIR SAID FIRST POSITION AND OPERATIVELY ASSOCIATED WITH SAID LEGS INTERMEDIATE THE LENGTH OF SAID LEGS TO MOVE DOWNWARDLY RELATIVE TO SAID TABLE TOP WHEN SAID LEGS ARE IN THEIR SAID SECOND POSITION.
