Description

PINLESS DIAPER Filed Jan. 12, 1962 FIGURE 2 FIGURE 3 FIGURE 4 United States Patent 3,089,494 PHNLESS DIAPER Robert Schwartz, Railway, N .J (1271 Westfield Ave, Union, NJ.) Filed Jan. 12, 1962, Ser. No. 165,757 2 Claims. (Cl. 128-284) This invention relates to improvements in pinless diapers. The diapers, because of their specific design, elimimate the use of buttons, pins, and other fasteners and can be applied to the baby with little disturbance and can also be simply and quickly removed.
Self-sealing adhesives have been incorporated into the diaper designs in .an attempt to improve their characteristics but the products have all been found wanting in one characteristic or another.
This invention provides a specific design incorporating self-sealing adhesives in the diaper structure in a manner adapted to overcome the prior art deficiencies.
The specific design of this invention involves a pinless diaper comprising a sheet of absorbent material. From the crotch portion there is an upwardly extending portion which is formed with oppositely extending wings. These wings, which can be of varying length depending on size desired, contain a self-sealing adhesive on both surfaces. This adapts the wings to be pressed into sealed engagement when one Wing is folded over the other. A downwardly extending portion of the sheet is so designed as to be adapted to be folded upwardly (against the abdomen for a boy or in case of a girl in the back) and then downwardly over the wings in sealed engagement. This latter downwardly extending portion contains self-sealing adhesive only on the surface away from the abdomen (or back) in the unfolded position so that, when (folded over the wings, it is adapted to be pressed into sealed engagement therewith thus holding the diaper in place.
In the accompanying drawing are shown illustrative embodiments of this invention:
FIG. 1 is a top plan view.
FIGS. 2, 3, and 4 are prospective views of the diaper in various stages of being folded into place.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, 10 designates a diaper embodying the invention containing a crotch portion 1. The baby is placed on the diaper with his legs on opposite sides of portion 1. Extending upwardly from 1 is a portion 2 containing oppositely extending wings 6 and 7. These contain self-sealing adhesive 8 and 9 on both surfaces. Extending downwardly from 1 is portion 3. This contains adhesive at the lower portion thereof 4 only on the undersurface away from the abdomen.
In fastening the diaper to the boy baby, the downwardly extending portion 3 is folded upwardly against the abdomen exposing 5 as shown in FIG. 2. The wings are then placed into sealed engagement by being folded over the abdomen with the use of only mild pressure and as illus- 3,089,494 Patented May 14, 1963 trated in FIG. 3. Portion 4, with the sealed adhesive portion 5 exposed, is then folded over the wings and also pressed into sealed engagement therewith fastening the diaper as shown in FIG. 4.
lThB self-sealing adhesive can be applied directly to the surfaces called for but preferably are fabric-like selfsealing adhesive pressure tape backing on the diaper sheet. These self-sealing pressure tape backings are readily available.
The structure of the diaper of this invention lends itself to various amplifications. Thus, elastic materials can be incorporated around the edges, if desired, for more secure fit. Reinforcing absorbent materials can also be incorporated. If desired, waterproof materials can be added onto one or both surfaces as long as the self-sealing mechanism is preserved. A variety of materials of construction can be used in the diaper sheet including, if desired, readily disposable materials or washable ones.
The diaper can also be readily removed by reversing the operations discussed above.
The advantages of this invention are apparent. A diaper of improved design is made available which avoids the cumbersome problems inherent in the use of pins and lends itself for use by even the inexperienced.
It is to be understood that this invention is not limited to the specific examples which have been offered merely as illustrations and that modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A pinless diaper comprising a sheet of absorbent material having a crotch portion; a portion of the diaper extending upwardly therefrom and formed with oppositely extending wings, said wings containing self-sealing adhesive on both surfaces so as to be adapted to be pressed into sealed engagement when folded over other self-sealing adhesive on the diaper; and a portion extending downwardly from the crotch portion adapted to be folded upwardly against the body, and downwardly over the wings in sealed engagement, said portion containing self-sealing adhesive only on the surface away from the body thus adapting it to be folded over the wings and to be pressed into sealed engagement with the wings to hold the diaper in place.
2. The diaper of claim 1 in which the adhesive is on pressure tape backings.
