3,088,469 HAIR CONDITIONER AND RETAHQER Emma L. Berryhill, 110i Woodrow Ave., Oildale, Calif., and Wayne L. Sayer, 2009 22nd St, Bakersfield, Calif. Filed Apr. 25, 1960, Ser. No. 24,452 Claims. ((11. 132-9) This invention relates to an improved hair conditioner and retainer.
When a womans hairdo is exposed to heat and humidity as, for example, while doing dishes or in the bathroom or while sleeping, it tends to lose its place and curl. To avoid this shower caps and the like have been resorted to which, while they exclude moisture, tend to pack the hair. An object of this invention, therefore, is to provide means for protecting the hairdo while avoiding packing same.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device which will completely enclose the hair on the head of the user and retain softness and texture inthe hair while protecting the hair.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a device which is easy to apply to and around the head, which is comfortable to wear and leaves no pieces of tissue, pins and the like in the hair, and which will cling to itself and to the hair, so that no ties are necessary to retain it in place.

FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary perspective of a modified form of this invention.
This application is a continuation-in-part of our prior copending application Serial No. 829,566, filed July 27, 1959, entitled Hair Conditioner and Retainer, now abandoned.
This invention contemplates taking a piece of nonwoven fabric approximately 29 inches long and 9% inches wide. A piece of fabric of such dimensions is large enough to be wrapped around the head of the user to enclose the complete hairdo to be protected. An edge is folded back as at 14 approximately 1 inch to prevent tearing and deterioration. By non-woven fabric as the term is used in this application and in the claims is meant a material such as described in Secrist Patent No. 2,528,793.
The non-woven fabric has lanolin applied thereto. In the preferred embodiment anhydrous lanolin is divided into a fine mist, the particles of which, in an ionization chamber are charged electrically and hence are precipitated by an intense electrostatic field onto the fabric.
The fabric thus prepared may be packaged, for example, in a bag 12 until it is to be utilized. The fabric is 1. rates atent then removed and wrapped around the hair as seen in FIGURE 1, clinging to itself and the hair so that no ties are necessary. The fabric will thus protect the hair from the effects of moisture and heat and at the same time condition same. A string 16 may be provided in the folded back edge 14 to add rigidity.
In FIGURE 4 a modified form of this invention is illustrated wherein two sheets of non-woven fabric sandwich a sheet of cheesecloth or the like 18 to add strength to the product.
While what hereinbefore has been described as the preferred embodiment of this invention, its is readily apparent that alterations and modifications may be resorted to without departing from the scope of this invention and such alterations and modifications are intended to be included within the scope of the appended claims.
We claim:
1. A hair retaining and conditioning device for enclosing and protecting a hairdo from heat and humidity While retaining the softness and texture of the hair, comprising: a fibrous sheet of non-woven fabric large enough to completely enclose the hairdo, and having the fibers thereof disposed normal to the plane of the fabric when fiat, said fibers being coated by electrically charged, fine particles of anhydrous lanolin thereon, whereby said sheet when Wrapped around the head of the user will cling to itself and to the hair so that no ties are necessary.
2. A hair retaining and conditioning device as defined in claim 1 in which the fibrous sheet is rectangular and wherein an edge along the long dimension of the rectangle is folded back to prevent tearing.
3. A hair retaining and conditioning device as defined in claim 1 in which the fibrous sheet is rectangular and wherein an edge along the long dimension of the rectangle is folded back to prevent tearing; and wherein a string is disposed along the folded-back edge.
4. A hair retaining and conditioning device as defined in claim 1 in which the fibrous sheet is rectangular and is approximately 29 inches long by 9% wide.
5. A hair retaining and conditioning device as defined in claim 1 in which the fibrous sheet is laminated with a second fibrous sheet of non-woven fabric and wherein a sheet of reinforcing cheesecloth is disposed between the sheets of non-woven fabric.

Claims (1)

1. A HAIR RETAINING AND CONDITIONING DEVICE FOR ENCLOSING AND PROTECTING A HAIRDO FROM HEAT AND HUMIDITY WHILE RETAINING THE SOFTMESS AND TEXTURE OF THE HAIR, COMPRISING A FIBROUS SHEET OFN NON-WOVEN FABRIC LARGE ENOUGH TO COMPLETELY ENCLOSE THE HAIRDO, AND HAVING THE FIBERS THEREOF DISPOSED NORMAL TO THE PLANE OF THE FABRIC WHEN FLAT, SAID FIBERS BEING COATED BY ELECTRICALLY CHARGED, FINE PARTICLES OF ANHYDROUS LANOLIN THEREON, WHEREBY SAID SHEET WHEN WRAPPED AROUND THE HEAD OF THE USER WILL CLING TO ITSELF AND TO THE HAIR SO THAT NO TIES ARE NECESSARY.
