United States Patent M 3,059,932 GGLFERS HEAD HOLDING HARNESS Harold G. Smallwood, 2147 Market St., Youngstown, Ohio Filed Nov. 14, 1960, Ser. No. 68,814 4 Claims. (Cl. 273190) This invention relates to a device for teaching a golfer to hold his head in proper position.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a head holding harness to be worn by a golfer to hold his head in proper position and prevent him from looking upwardly and away from the golf ball while practicing various strokes.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a simple and inexpensive head holding harness.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a head holding harness that may be quickly and easily applied to the golfers head and chest and easily and quickly removed therefrom.
Those skilled in the game of golf will recognize that it is very important that the player keep his head in such position that he can see the golf ball at all times during a drive or other stroke. The usual tendency of holding one's head upwardly when bending forwardly makes it ditficult for one learning the game of golf to keep his head down and his eyes on the golf ball. The present invention pro vides a simple and inexpensive device which aids materially in achieving this desirable object. The head holding harness is formed of a head engaging portion and a chest encircling band or belt with an adjustable Y-shaped flexible tape therebetween. The device may be quickly positioned on the golfers head and body and used during practice sessions.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being the intention to cover all changes and modifications of the example of the invention herein chosen for purposes of the disclosure, which do not constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention.
FIGURE 1 is a front plan view of a golfer wearing the head holding harness.
FIGURE 2 is a side view of a golfer wearing the head holding harness.
FIGURE 3 is a partial perspective view of a golfer completing a drive and showing the head holding harness in perspective.
By referring to the drawings and FIGURE 1 in particular, it will be seen that a golfer has been illustrated and that upon his head a harness has been positioned which comprises a circular band positioned around the head and held against movement downwardly on the head by a pair of crossed tapes 11 and 12. The tape 11 extends from the front central portion of the band 10 upwardly and over the head and dovmwardly where it is secured at the back of the band 10. The tape 12' extends from one side of the band 10 upwardly and over the head and downwardly to the other side where it is secured to the band 10 in oppositely disposed relation. A Y-shaped tape 13 having its upper ends attached to the head band 10 adjacent the ends of the tape 12 just referred to extends downwardly from the head band 10 and in front of assaaaz Patented Get. 23, 1962 the chest of the golfer. An adjustment buckle 14 is incorporated so that the length of the Y-shaped tape may be adjusted and its lower end is preferably detachably secured to a belt 15 which in turn is provided with a buckle 16.
The Y-shaped tape 13 has the two upper portions thereof of sufficient length so that the junction of their lower ends with the single vertical portion of the Y-shaped tape 13 is positioned well below the players head and so that the sides of the Y-shaped tape 13 do not touch the face of the wearer.
The belt 15 is preferably worn about the chest with the Y-shaped tape 13 secured thereto centrally of the front portion thereof and adjacent the buckle 16 by which the chest encircling belt 15 is adjusted.
The head band 10 may be formed of a section of flexible tape or belting with the ends secured to one another or they may be secured to one another through a buckle, or alternately, a section of elastic material may be incorporated. The tapes 11 and 12 which extend upwardly and over the head from the head band 10 are preferably formed of flexible material or belting and all of the parts of the head holding harness are relatively strong yet light in weight and of small cross sectional size.
The person wearing the head holding harness will find that the restraint against the upward movement of the head provided by the head holding harness is adequate to serve the purpose of keeping the players head down in proper position to observe the golf ball and the area of the swing or stroke of the golf club about to engage the ball. As shown in FIGURE 2, the player has moved the golf club to an upper position about to begin a downwardly driving stroke and it will be observed that although his body has altered its position from that shown in the front view of FIGURE 1 the head holding harness has effectively held his head in downwardly inclined position so that the golf ball is in clear view at all times.
In FIGURE 3 of the drawing the driving stroke has been completed and the golfers hands and golf club moved to the opposite end of the driving stroke. The position of his body has again changed by the head holding harness has held his head in desirable position at all times.
It will thus occur to those skilled in the art that the head holding harness can be worn by a golfer practicing and that it will enable him to quickly acquire the habit of holding his head properly and thereby contribute to his golf game. Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A head holding harness for a golfer comprising a head band adapted to encircle the golfers head above his eyes and having a pair of tapes positioned thereabove in crossed relation with their ends secured to said head band, a Y-shaped tape having upper ends and a lower end, said upper ends secured to the opposite sides of said head band and said lower end extending downwardly and a body encircling belt secured to said lower end of said Y-shaped tape and adapted to be positioned around the chest of the golfer.
2. The head holding harness set forth in claim 1 and wherein the head band comprises a strip of flexible material.
3. A head holding harness comprising an uppermost portion including a head band and means attached thereto and extending thereover, two depending tapes having upper and lower ends with said upper ends secured to said head band in oppositely disposed relation and joined at their lower ends, a body encircling belt and flexible means interconnecting said joined lower ends and said belt.
4. A head holding harness comprising a body encircling belt formed of a piece of belting and having fasteners on its ends, a head band comprising a section of flexible material and having a pair of crossed tapes formed of flexible material positioned thereabove with their ends secured to said head band, said crossed tapes being secured to one another at their point of crossing, a secondary pair of tapes secured to said head band in oppositely dis- 5 of said flexible means.
