Description

June 19, 1962 S. E. ROBINSON AIR SEALED BURIAL CASKET Filed April 5, 1956 29 so 31 27fi5 SHERMAN 5 R05 INSO N IN V EN TOR.
ATTORNEY United States atent 3,039,168 AIR SEALED BURIAL CASKET Sherman E. Robinson, Arthur, Ill., assignor to Progress Manufacturing Co., Inc., Arthur, 111., a corporation of Illinois 7 Filed Apr. 5, 1956, Ser. No. 577,185 3 Claims. (Cl. 27-6) This invention relates to an air sealed burial casket. 1 The invention is more particularly concerned with a metallic burial casket including a body and a cover and one of the important objects of the invention is to extend the upper portion of the body vertically upward into the cover whereby moisture or liquid is prevented from entering the body irrespective of whether or not the casket is disposed in a perfectly level position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a burial casket including a body having a marginal vertical flange at the top thereof, and a cover for the body having a marginal multiple flange structure co-operating with said body flange and providing therewith an air seal.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a metallic burial casket including a body and a pair of cooperating half covers for the body and wherein the body and covers are provided with co-operating air sealing means.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent in the course of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein- FIG.1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the improved casket in accordance with one structural embodiment thereof.
FIG. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view as observed in the plane of line 2-2 on FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a perspective view as observed from the underside of one of the half covers for the body of the casket.
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3 of the other half cover for the body of the casket.
FIG. 5 is a perspective view of a channel member embodied in the casket construction.
FIG. 6 is a fragmental top plan view of the casket body and showing the channel member secured thereto.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, and first to FIGS. 1 to 6 thereof, the casket will be seen to comprise a body 10 and a pair of like covers 11.
The body and covers are constructed of uniform gauge sheet metal and the body 10 comprises a base including a major central bottom wall 12 which is upwardly offset from relatively narrow side and end bottom walls 13 and 14 respectively. The base further includes relatively shallow side and end vertical walls 15 and 16 respectively, from which other side and end walls 17 and 18 respectively extend inwardly and upwardly to the respective lower edges of the vertical side and end walls 19 and 20 of the casket body 10.
Relatively narrow horizontal side and end walls 21 and 22 respectively project laterally outwardly from the upper edges of the body side and end walls, other side and end vertical walls 23 and 24 respectively project upwardly from the outer edges of walls 21 and 22 and other side and end horizontal walls 25 and 26 respectively project laterally inwardly from the upper edges of walls 23 and 24. Other vertical side and end walls 27 and 28 respectively project vertically upwardly from the inner ends of walls 25 and 26 and which terminate in inwardly directed narrow horizontal flanges 27 and 28 respectively.
It is, of course, to be understood that the walls 15 to 18 of the base and also the walls 23, 24 and 27, 28 are of relatively small vertical extent as compared to the ice main side and end walls 19 and 20 of the casket body 10, the walls of the base providing mainly an artistic appearance to the casket body as do also as a secondary function the flanges 21 to 24.
The vertical side walls 27 are interrupted centrally of the body 10 as is more particularly indicated in FIG. 6 and a channel member 29 (FIG. 5) is disposed transversely of the body and in the interruption of the walls 27. The channel member comprises a base wall 30 and opposite side walls 31, and a continuous flange 32 projects laterally outwardly from the upper edges and ends of the side walls 31 and downwardly from the opposite ends of the base wall 30. The flange portions at opposite ends of the channel member have adhesive applied thereto for fixing the channel member in position.
The covers 11 are of like construction and each thereof includes an arched top wall 36 and the opposite sides and opposed ends of the covers include downwardly and laterally outwardly inclined walls 37 and 38 respectively and the opposite sides and opposed ends of the covers further include vertical walls 39 and 40 respectively as integral extensions of walls 37 and 38. Side and end horizontal walls 41 and 42 respectively project laterally inwardly from the lower edges of walls 39 and 40 and side and end vertical walls 43 and 44 respectively project vertically upwardly from the inner edges of walls 41 and 42 respectively.
It will be observed that the side and end horizontal walls 25 and 26 with the side and end vertical walls 27 and 28 of the body provide a marginal recess at the top of the casket body for receiving the rectangular portions on the covers which are defined by the horizontal side and end walls 41 and 42 and the spaced vertical Walls 39, 40, 43 and 44.
The adjacent end walls 45 of the covers 11 are in vertical planes as is clearly indicated in FIGS. 1, 3 and 4 and such walls at their lower edges are provided with horizontal walls 46 and spaced vertical walls 47 which are seated in the channel member 29.
As is indicated in FIG. 2, suitable hinges 48 and button locks 49 are disposed between the covers and the body at opposite sides of the casket.
It is to be particularly observed from FIGS. 1 and 2 that the joints between the body 10 and the covers 11 include passages extending vertically upward from the horizontal passages between the walls 25, 26 and 41, 42 whereby water or moisture cannot pass into the body 1d of the casket even though same is not in an altogether horizontal position.
Having set forth my invention in accordance with certain specific structural embodiments thereof, what I claim and desire to secure by US. Letters Patent is:
l. A burial casket comprising a body and a cover wherein the cover is shallow compared with the depth of the body, said body including a bottom, opposite side and end horizontal walls and opposite side and end vertical walls at the inner edges of said horizontal walls thereby providing a cover receiving recess extending around an opening in the body, said cover including corresponding horizontal and vertical walls, said cover vertical walls being adaptable to fit outside the recess forming vertical walls of the body, said cover also comprising a pair of co-operating half sections, the body being provided with a channel member intermediate the ends thereof for seating of adjacent ends of the cover sections, and said opposite side walls being interrupted for seating of adjacent ends of the cover sections in the channel member, whereby water is prevented from entering said body when in an approximate horizontal position by virtue of the Water having to rise against the force of gravity in the joint between the cover and body.
2. The structure according to claim 1, wherein adjacent ends of the cover sections comprise abutting vertical Walls with horizontal walls projecting oppositely from the lower edges of said vertical walls, said walls being seatable in said channel member.
3. A burial casket comprising a metal body member and a cover therefor, wherein the cover comprising a pair of co-operating half sections is shallow compared with the depth of the body member, said body member including a bottom, opposite side and end horizontal Walls and opposite side and end vertical walls projecting upwardly above the horizontal walls, the horizontal walls projecting inwardly from the top of the bottom section of the body member, said horizontal and vertical walls of the body member providing a right angle cover receiving recess extending around the edge of an opening in the body member, said body member being provided with a trough member intermediate the ends thereof for seating the adjacent ends of said cover sections, said cover in its edge structure including corresponding horizontal and vertical walls, the horizontal and vertical walls of said cover being adapted to fit outside the recess formed by the vertical and horizontal walls of the body member, the adjacent ends of the cover construction comprising abutting vertical walls with horizontal walls projecting oppositely from the lower edges of said abutting vertical walls and being seatable in said trough member, the lower edge of the cover extending outwardly a greater distance than the width of the horizontal walls of the body member, whereby water is prevented from entering said body member when in an approximate horizontal position by virtue of the water having to rise against the force of gravity in the joint between the vertical edges of the body member and the cover.
