PORTABLE-SEWINGMACHINE TABLE Filed March 2, 1959 INVENTOR. KENNETH A. BLEVINS 77 4 BY UM United States Patent I O M 3,034,841 PORTABLE-SEWING-MACHINE TABLE Kenneth A. Blevins, Missoula, Mont., assignor to Type- Write Desk Mfg. Co., Inc., Missoula, Mont, a corporation of Montana Filed Mar. 2, 1959, Ser. No. 796,316 2 Claims. (Cl. 311-42) This invention discloses an improved portable-sewingmachine table; and, more particularly, discloses a table which supports a portable-sewing-machine at a convenient working level, and which extends the working surface of the machine.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple and inexpensive table structure which conveniently supports a portable-sewing-machine and extends the working surface thereof.
Other objects and features of my invention will become evident upon examination of the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying single sheet of drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a top plan view of the lower surface of my table;
FIGURE 2 is a top plan view of the upper surface of my table;
FIGURE 3 is a top plan view of the two table surfaces, as assembled; and
FIGURE 4 is a top perspective view of the table.
It is, of course, Well known that a conventional portable-sewing-machine is usually characterized by a base-portion in the form of a rectangular enclosure of standard height, the top surface of the base-portion being the working surface of the machine; and that the sewing mechanism is located at the left end of the machine as faced by the user, with a relatively small part of the Working surface located to the left and rear of said mechanism. This limited working area to the left and rear of the machine is often troublesome to the user, particularly when the article being sewn is bulky or large. My invention effectively eliminates this problem by providing convenient working surface extensions to the left and rear of the machine, substantially on the same level as the working surface of the machine, and independent of the length or width of said base-portion.
Lower surface is used to support the portablesewing-machine. Upper surface 11, which is formed with a cut-out defined by edges 12 and 13, serves to extend the working surface of said machine. These surfaces 10 and 11 may be made of any suitable material, but are preferably made from a light weight wood, and they are held in horizontal spaced-apart planes by spacing means, such as dowels 15 and legs 16. The spacers 15 are preferably formed of wood, and with a circular cross-section as shown, but it should be understood that a different material could be used, and the spacers could be shaped so as to have a cross-section that is triangular, square, hexagonal, etc. Spacers 15 are mounted between surfaces 10 and 11 by any suitable means such as wood screws (not shown), and are of such a length that the distance between the top of surface 10 and the top of surface 11 is approximately equal to the height of said base-portion. Should the height of said baseportion be slightly less than said distance, a thin pad placed between said base-portion and lower surface 10 would supply the necessary correction.
3,634,841 Patented May 15, 1962 The proper position for the portable-seWing-machi'ne is best seen in FIGURE 3. By placing the machine on surface 10, with the left and rear edges of the baseportion positioned so as to abut edges 13 and 12, respectively, of upper surface 11, it is obvious that the top of surface 11 and the working surface of the portablesewing-machine will form an enlarged continuous surface. In effect, surface 10 and edges 12 and 13 define 3 sides of a rectangular enclosure. Furthermore, since the vertical projection of the right-angle corner defined by edges 12 and 13 passes through surface 10 at a point substantially to the left and rear thereof, the table will accommodate portable-sewing-machines of varying widths and lengths.
Upper surface 11 is formed with a notch 14 to accommodate the latch (not shown) that is conventionally mounted at the left end of the sewing machine base, and which is normally used to secure the portable-sewingmachine cover (not shown). Legs 16 are provided to support lower surface it in a horizontal position, and are preferably made of wrought iron as shown. They may, however, be made of wood, or other suitable material; and it should be understood that folding or removable legs are contemplated, to facilitate convenient storage of my table.
Although I have described my table in general terms, and for use with a sewing machine having a rectangular base-portion, it should be understood that the table could be readily adapted for use with a machine having a non-rectangular base merely by contouring the cut-out in surface 11 in accordance with the contour of the particular base-portion.
What has been described is considered to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it should be understood that modifications may be made without departing from the scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A table for a portable-sewing-machine, wherein the working surface of said machine forms a part of a substantially rectangular base portion of predetermined height, said table comprising: a first surface for supporting said machine; a second surface shaped to define a right angle cut-out open on two sides and adapted to abut two sides of said rectangular base portion; means independent of said machine for securely attaching said second surface to said first surface in parallel spacedapart relation therewith and for maintaining the distance from the top of said first surface to the top of said second surface approximately equal to said height, whereby said second surface top and said working surface are caused to lie in a common plane; and a plurality of legs for supporting said first surface at a second predetermined height, whereby said machine may be supported at a convenient working level.
2. A table for a portable-sewing-machine, said machine being characterized by a rectangular base portion of predetermined height with the top of said base portion defining the working surface of said machine, and wherein the sewing mechanism is located near the left end of said machine as faced by the user, said table comprising: a first surface; a plurality of legs depending from said first surface and arranged to hold said first surface in a horizontal plane; a second surface shaped to define a right angle cut-out that is open to the right and front; and spacing means securely attached to said surfaces and independent of said machine, for supporting said second surface in a horizontal plane above said first surface with the distance between the tops of said first and second surfaces equal to said height, and in a lateral position such that a vertical projection of the right-angle corner defined by said cut-out extends through the left-rear portion of said first surface with the rightfront portion of said first surface located beneath said cut-out, whereby placement of the portable-sewingmachine with the left and rear edges of said base portion in abutment With said perpendicular edges causes said working surface to be extended to the left and rear independently of the length and Width of said base portion.
