2 Claims. (Cl. 128-287) This invention relates to a waterproof diapercover and particularly to a diaper cover of the type having a pocket for receiving and holding a diaper.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a diaper cover construction which will (a) minimize working," i. e., stretching and relaxing, of the waistband in the region of the diaper pocket when the cover is in use, thereby minimizing rumpling, bunching, and displacement of the diaper; (b) permit the body portion incorporating the pocket to be laid substantially flat to facilitate the insertion and removal of the diaper from the pocket; and (c) have suflicient elasticity at the waist band and at the leg openings to insure snugness and water tightness in these regions.

To this end, the diaper cover of the present invention has a substantially inelastic, elongated body portion which incorporates the pocket for the diaper and highly elastic wing portions which extend from each side of one end of the body portion and carry fastening means for fastening the wing portions to the opposite end of the body portion when the body portion is folded. The inelasticity of the body portion minimizes working" of the waist band adjacent the pocket during the use of the diaper cover and permits the pocket portion to be laid flat to facilitate insetrion or removal of the diaper from the pocket. The elasticity of the wing portions provides a snugness and water tightness at both the waist band and leg openings when the diaper cover is in use.

Having broadly described the invention, a more detailed description is given hereinafter by reference to the accompanying drawings herein:

Fig. 1 is a plan view of the interior side of the unfolded diaper cover of the invention.

Referring to the drawings and in particular to Figs. 1 and 2, the diaper cover includes an elongated, generally rectangular body portion having a pocket 11 for receiving and holding a diaper, and wing portions 12 which extend from each side of one end of the body portion 10 and are adapted to be fastened to the sides of the opposite end of the body portion 10 by suitable fastening means, such as the snaps 13 on the wing portions 12 and 14 on the opposite end of body portion 10, to form the enclosing garment with the pocket 11 on the interior thereof as shown in Fig. 2. The wing portions 12 are of a width, at their outer extremities, substantially less than one-half the length of the body portion 10 to provide leg openings 15 as shown in Fig. 3 and the inner marginal edges 12b of the wing portions 12 are curved inwardly toward the body portion 10 to conform to the contour of the legs of the wearer.

In accordance with the invention, the body portion is substantially inelastic to minimize working of the waist band adjacent the ends of the pocket 11, thereby minimizing rumpling, bunchiug or displacement of the diaper when the cover is in use. To this end, the body portion 10 is made of a suitable substantially unstretchable material, such as a waterproof plastic film or treated fabric, such as coated silk. In contrast, the wing portions 112 are made highly elastic and provide sufiticient elasticity to insure a snugness and water tightness at the waistband and leg openings when the cover is in use.

The wing portions H are conveniently made of the same material as the body portion 10 and made longitudinnlly elastic by gathering the material of the opposed edges 12a and 12b and holding these edges so gathered by suitable elastic means, such as elastic thread or strips or tapes of suitable elastic material.

The body portion 10 is conveniently formed of a backing sheet and two pocket forming sheets ltltb which overlie the backing sheet 10a and are stitched at their outer marginal edges to the backing sheet 100. The inner marginal edges of the sheets 10b are curved to provide an elongated medial opening 16 through which the diaper may be inserted or removed and to provide an exposed area of the diaper to receive soil and moisture. The pocket forming sheets 10b are preferably pleated at their corners to provide fullness at the central portion of the pocket 11 and the inner curved marginal edges of the sheets 10b are shorter than the outer marginal edges as best shown in Fig. 5. This latter feature compensates for the difference in radius of the inner and outer surfaces of the crotch portion when a diaper is inserted in pocket ill and the cover folded as shown in Fig.3, to thereby minimize wrinkling of the sheets 16b in this region.

Extra snaps, such as shown at Ma, may be provided adjacent the sides of the opposite end of the body portion 10 to provide additional ndjustability for the wa st band, and reinforcing pads, such as shown at 1'7 may be provided on the inner surface of sheets 10 to reinforce some of the snaps.

From the above description it can be seen that there is provided a novel construction for a diaper cover of the type incorporating a pocket for receiving and holding a diaper. The substantial inelastic body portion lit incorporating the diaper pocket 11 minimizes worlung of the waist band adjacent the ends of the pocket when the cover is in use, thereby minimizing rumpling, bunching, and displacement of the diaper, and permits the body portion 10 to be laid fiat to facilitate insertion and removal of the diaper from the pocket ill. The highly elastic wing portion 12 provides sutficicnt elasticity at the waist band and the leg openings to insure snugness and water tightness at these regions when the cover is in use.

While a particular embodiment of the invention has been shown and described it is to be understood that this is for the purpose of illustration only and that changes and modifications can be made therein wizhout departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having described our invention, we claim:

1. A diaper cover comprising, an elongated substantially inelastic body portion of flexible waterproof material having a pocket open at one face thereof along a medial portion thereof for receiving and holding a diaper with an area of the diaper exposed, highly elastic wing portions extending from each side of one end of the body portion. cooperating fastening means on said wing portions and the other end of said body portion adapter. to be fastened together when the body portion is folded on itself to form an enclosing garment with said pocket opening to the interior thereof, said wing portions being of a width at their outer extremities substantially less than one-half of the length of said body portion so as to provide leg openings when the body portion is folded to form the enclosing garment, the elastic wing portions being formed of flexible waterproof material and comprising elastic means covered by said flexible waterproof material for making said wing portions elastic at both the leg openings and the waist band when the cover is in use.

2. A diaper cover comprising, an elongated substantially inelastic body portion of flexible waterproof material having a pocket open at one face thereof along a medial portion thereof for receiving and holding a diaper with an area of the diaper exposed, highly elastic wing portions extending from each side of one end of the body portion, cooperating fastening means on said wing portions and the other end of the body portion adapted to be fastened together when the body portion is folded on itself to form an enclosing garment with said pocket opening to '4 the interior thereof, said wing portion being made elastic by gathering the material thereof along the opposed lateral edges and holding the material gathered by elastic means, said wing portions being of a width at their outer extremities substantially less than one-half of the length of said body portion so as to provide leg openings when the body portion is folded to form the enclosing garment, the elastic wing portions providing elasticity at both of the leg openings and the waist band when the cover is in use.
