CIGARETTE OR CIGAR WITH FILTER Filed July 1, 1955 Jig-"L 3/ cyz uvaemxu awn/@004; COATED'P/IPEQ 5/2/1053 INVENTOR. f/e/vev fives/6 United States Patent CIGARETTE 0R CIGAR WITH FILTER Henry Burbig, Bronx, N. Y.
Application July 1, 1955, Serial No. 519,555
3 Claims. (Cl. 131-10) This invention relates to a novel form of filter containing cigar or cigarette.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a cigarette or cigar equipped with a filter which is more effective.
Among other objects of the invention is to provide a cigar or cigarette with a filter tip which also cools the smoke.
These objects and others ancillary thereto are obtained by providing a filter portion for a cigar or cigarette which is made up of two distinct filters separated by an air space. The two filters are separated by a ring device which may comprise an additional absorptive region.
In the specification and claims it will be understood that the term cigarette includes similar smoking articles such as cigars.
The invention both as to its organization and its method of operation together with additional objects and advantages thereof will best be understood from the following description of specific embodiments thereof when read in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of one form of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal cross sectional view of a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 3 is an exploded view of the modification shown in Fig. 2.
Although the drawing shows a cigarette it will be readily understood that substantially the same filter construction applies also to cigar and similar preformed tobacco products. The cigarette shown has the wrapper and the tobacco filler or pack 13 made up of a suitable smoking mixture which comprises the greater part of the cigar or cigarette.
The wrapper 10 has an end 11 which is to be lighted and end 12 which forms the mouthpiece. On the inside of the mouthpiece end is the first filter 20, an air space 30 and a second filter 21. The air space 30 is defined and reinforced by an internal ring element 31. This ring 31 may be coated with an absorptive composition such as charcoal. The charcoal may be applied to the ring or the ring may be formed from some organic material such as cellulose fibers and charred on the inside and/ or outside surface.
In the device according to Fig. 1 air is admitted into the space 30 by means of the small orifice 32 in the wrapper 10 and a similar small orifice 33 in the ring 31. In the drawing these orifices are shown as displaced from each other although they can coincide, if desired. A similar 2,819,720 Patented Jan. 14, 1958 ice efiect can be obtained without orifice 33 since leakage can be depended upon to admit air into the space 30 from orifice 32.
In the operation of the device of Fig. l the smoke from the end 11 when lighted, travels through the tobacco 13 and then passes through filter 21 to air space 30. In the air space 30 a turbulance due to the relative increase in cross sectional space between filter 21 and space 30 is set up and the smoke is mixed together and/or with the air from opening 32, passes over the absorptive charcoal surfaces of the ring 31, and then passes through the second filter 20 whereupon it is again filtered before passing into the users mouth and lungs.
The cigarette of Figs. 2 and 3 is substantially the same as that of Fig. 1 except that in the case of Figs. 2 and 3 the air holes 32 and 33 are omitted. Except for the mixing with air, substantially the same effect takes place with the cigarette of Figs. 2 and 3 as with the cigarette of Fig. 1. As shown in Fig. 3 the ring element 31 and the general configuration of the cigarette is round but the cigarette may be oval in shape or other similar shape, if desired. The outside diameter of the ring 30, the filter elements 20 and 21 and the tobacco filler pack 13 is substantially the same.
The features and principles underlying the invention described above in connection with specific exemplifications will suggest to those skilled in the art many other modifications thereof. It is accordingly desired that the appended claims shall not be limited to any specific feature or details thereof.
I claim:
1. In a cigarette of the type having a tobacco containing portion and a distinct filter portion adjacent the mouthpiece thereof with the filter portion and tobacco containing portion covered by the same wrapper, the improved construction of the filter portion comprising a first, longitudinally extending filter element filling and supporting the wrapper from the inside thereof, a second filter element spaced from the first filter element filling and supporting the Wrapper from the inside thereof, and ring means on the inside of said wrapper defining an air space separating the first and second filter elements, said ring means supporting the wrapper from the inside thereof, said wrapper containing a single small orifice in the por-- tion thereof surrounding the ring means.
2. The cigarette as set forth in claim 1 in which the ring comprises a charcoal coating.
3. The cigarette as claimed in claim 1 wherein the ring means contains a small orifice in alignment with the orifice of the wrapper.
