CLOTHES-DRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,754, dated July 24, 188?. Application filed February 5, 1883. (No model T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OSCAR F. SMITH, of the borough of Norristown, county of Montgomery, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Olothes-Driers, of which this is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of a clothesdrier complete, (with three slats omitted,) in which the features of my invention are em-. braced. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the support-plate 0, showing the mortises or openings h, designed to hold the slats D erect when not in use. Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the slats D. Fig. 4 is a front view of the hangerplate f, which is permanently cast or attached to the semicircular slat-holder B. Fig. 5 is a sectional view through one of the slats D as arranged when in use.
My invention relates to the class of clothesdriers generally used within domestic apartments; and it consists, first, in the arrangement of a semicircular plate or slat-holder, B, having a downward-projecting hanger-on its chord-in which are tapering slots, to facilitate transfer and removal from the wall without the removal of attachment-screws. I11 the arc of the holder B are anumber of radial slots, a, closed at their lower extremities, thus forming shoulders (Z, which support the slats D when inserted in said slots for use. In line with each of the slots an oblong opening, 0, is made, the intervening metal forming a cross-bar, e, which serves to support the slats D in aperpendicular position, this being effected by means of the slot at and lip 0 at the inner or lower end of the slat D, in connection with the mortise or opening h, Fig. 2. The supporting-plate C is also semicircular. Its circle being less, it is readily placed within and under the holder B, and its special purpose is to steady and support any one or all of the slats D when folded up out of use. It has three lugs, g, which rest upon the lugs m, Fig. 1, and it is thus held in position securely while the holder B is attached to the wall, but may be readily disconnected when the holder B is removed from the the pressure is upward against the bottom of the holder B.
My device possesses the important advantages of being folded upward out of the way where children cannot injure it, is readily transferred to different rooms, is cheaply constructed of two light castings, B and O, requiring no machine-work, and the wooden slats D are easily made.
The holder-plate B, constructed as described, to wit,- with radial slots a, oblong openings 0, shoulders (Z, cross-bars e, hanger plate f, and lugs m-may be used without the supporting plate 0, by substituting for this supportingplate a wire or upright thin flange located within the semicircle of and underneath the slots (1, and supported by three or more arms projecting inward from the ledge or shoulders (I, and lo cated near the extremes and middle of the semicircle of the shoulder-rim, to be used in connection with the slats D, the slats D in such case to have, in addition to slot or and lip 0, a shallow recess or notch cut in its lower or inner end; or, in lieu of the supportingplate 0, the slats D may be grasped and supported, when folded, by a semicircular plate having an equal number of elastic slots or re cesses, said plate to be located near the upper endof the slats D whenturned up out of the way. I- prefer, however, to use the plate 0 in connection with the holder B, as first hereinabove described, on account of the ease and facility of inserting the ends of the slats D, and as being more accurate in causing all of the slats D to stand erect parallel with each other. The use of the plate 0 also obviates the necessity of any machinery or parts being located at an inconvenient height for supporting the upperend of the slats D when folded.
Having now described my invention, WhatI sides 70, and upright flange Z, and the slats D, claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters in combination, in the manner and for the pur- Patent, is pose substantially as set forth.
The holder-plate B, with its radial slots a, OSCAR F. SMITH. 5 oblong Openings 0, shoulders (I, cross-bars e, lVitnesses:
slotted hanger plate f and lugs m, the plate 0. M. MYERS,
O, with its lugs openings 71 having beveled JOHN JARRETT.
