ja of 05716? krzwwmc United States Patent ONE-PIECE FOLDABLE DISPLAY BOX AND BODK CglBlNATIONS AND METHOD OF MAKENG T M 2 Claims. (Cl. 20647) N. Y., assignor to Castle Offset- N. Y., a corporation of This invention relates to one piece foldable display box and book combinations and the method of making them.
The object of this invention is to provide a display box with a book hinged to one edge of the display face of the box for folding over said display face into closed position.
Another object is to interpose two panels, foldable over each other, between the hinge and said edge in the above combination, so that the book may be folded in between said panels before folding them over the top of the display face to closed position.
Another object is to provide crossed cuts in the display face of the above box and score the flaps thus formed so that they may be bent inwardly of the box, their inner ends resting on the inside of the opposite panel of the box to form a depression in the display face for insertion of the merchandise package or item for display, the remaining space inside the box providing storage for additional items of merchandise.
A further object is to make a blank of suitable sheet material hingeably attached to the book at one end, and properly scored for folding into the form of the combinations referred to above, using a common blank form to make either of the combinations, and storing and handling the flat blank forms in stacks to conserve space and facilitate handling, until the boxes are required for packaging, at which time they are folded into the form desired and immediately filled.
Other and more specific objects of this invention will appear in the following detailed description of the combination and method of making same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the common blank form which may be used in making the combination.
Fig. 2 shows the combination ready for its final step in making either form of combination,
Fig. 3 is one form of the combination in which the hinge of the book is fixed directly at the edge of the display face of the box, and
Fig. 4 is the same form tion.
The blank form as shown in Fig. 1 is cut and scored as indicated to provide a hinge strip at one end of the blank having the book 11 hinged to it by any suitable type of hinge means 12.
Next to the hinge strip 10 are two panels 13 and 14 substantially the same size as the wide sides of the box, and separated by scoring at 15, 16 and 17; then comes a double fold strip 18, then the narrow side panel 19 of the box proper, the wide side panel 20, the other narrow side panel 21, the other wide side panel 22, and a narrow strip 23, which may be gummed for gluing to the inside of the narrow side panel 19. These panels are separated by scoring as indicated at 24, 25, 26, 27 and 27 to facilitate folding.
The panel 20 has extensions at its ends to form the narrow end panels 29 and 30 with flap strips 31 and 32 respectively, and the narrow side panels 19 and 21 have extensions at their ends to form the ear flaps 33. Proper of combination in closed posiice scoring is provided as indicated to facilitate folding of these parts.
Panel 22 provides the, display face of the box and may be cut along diagonals 34 and 35 of a display space to form triangular flaps which may be scored on the outer side of the box along their bases 36, 37, 38 and 39 defining the display space and also at some distance away from the base on the inner side of the box.
Panel 14 may be provided with end flaps 40 and 41 gummed on their inner side for gluing over the ends of panel 13 when it is desired to fix them together and to fix the hinge 12 at the edge of the box. If it is desired to make the other form of combination with the two folding panels 13 and 14 spacing the hinge 12 from the box, the flaps may be glued down over the ends of their own panel 14, or they may be cut off or otherwise removed. In closing the latter combination, the book may be turned on its hinge 12 to fold in between the panels 13 and 14 and the thus covered book folded over the display face of the box into closed position.
The double fold strip 18 is provided to accommodate the thickness of the book in either form of combination.
The blank form is not only symmetrical but may be made reversible by providing the scoring on both sides of the blank sothat the folding may be reversed, as may be desired, to expose either side of the blank on the outside of the box and cover panels of the combination.
The sheet material may be cardboard, plastic, metal or other suitable composition of matter and may be cut in stacks, and after scoring and otherwise preparing, may be stored flat in stacks until used for packaging and finishing, to conserve space and facilitate handling prior thereto.
When the box is formed by folding the blank and fixing the strip 23 to the inside of the narrow side panel 19, and the cars 33 turned down and the end flaps 31 and 32 inserted into the ends of the box, the triangular fiaps in the display face may be pushed in to form a nest or depression for holding a sample package or item of merchandise which may be contained in the box.
Many obvious modifications in form and structure of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention, as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A blank form of sheet material hinged at one end to a book and comprising a series of panels separated by scoring to facilitate making folds between the panels, said series beginning at said one end including in succession two cover panels, four box panels comprising a narrow side ,panel, a wide side panel, a second narrow side panel and a second wide side panel, and a gummed narrow strip adapted for gluing to said first narrow side panel to form a box portion, one of said wide side panels having end extensions adapted to form end flaps for said box portion, ear flaps at both ends of each narrow side panel, said second wide side panel being cut on diagonal lines to form triangular flaps with bases defining a display space in said panel, said triangular flaps being scored for pressing into the box when formed to provide a depression or display nest in said panel.
2. A blank form as defined in claim 1, one of said cover panels having gummed end flaps for gluing said cover panels together to form a single outside cover for said book.
