COMPOSITE TRAINING PANTS AND DIAPER Filed Dec. 21, 1954 INVENTOR. YVETTE L. Fbuc BY MOM/WW5 ,4 TTOIZNE vs United States Patent COMPOSITE TRAINING PANTS AND DIAPER Yvette L. Folk, San Jose, Calif.
Application December 21, 1954, Serial No. 476,629
3 Claims. (Cl. 128-284) This invention relates to infants wear, and pertains more particularly to a garment which serves as a com bination diaper and infants training pants.
The present invention contemplates the provision of an infants garment of this Character that can be quickly and easily applied or removed, which can be readily laundered, and which will dry quickly.
The invention also provides a combined diaper and training pants wherein a diaper portion can be partially detached from the protective waterproof pants sheath for washing, and may be suspended from a line with the pants sheath bowed out of contact with the diaper portion except along restricted edge portions to facilitate drying.
A further object of the invention is to provide a garment of this character which is simple and inexpensive to make, and comfortable for the infant to wear.
These'and other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a composite garment embodying the invention in its fully assembled condition ready for wear.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the garment of Fig. 1 showing the upper ends of the diaper flaps detached from the pants sheath, and the diaper partially withdrawn from the interior of the said sheath.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the diaper fully withdrawn from the interior of the pants sheath for laundering, the pants sheath being shown turned inside out as a result of the diaper Withdrawing operation.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the opposite side of the garment in the same condition as in Fig. 3, but with the garment hanging from a line to dry.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged, fragmentary, sectional view taken along line 5-5 of Fig. 1 but with the fastener unsnapped.
Referring to the drawing, an illustrative embodiment A of my composite garment comprises a pair of conventional type of waterproof, legless infants pants 10, which may be of rubber or plastic sheet material, having a diaper pad 11 attached thereto and normally sheathed therein in the form of an absorbent lining as shown in Fig. 1. The pants 10, of the type generally referred to as training pants, preferably are made from a single piece of suitably shaped material stitched or heat sealed together at hip-seams 12 to define two leg openings 13 and a waist opening 14.
The diaper pad 11 is of generally rectangular shape, and consists of a plurality of layers of suitable fabric such as muslin or other washable, absorbent material. The diaper pad portion 11 is of substantially the same width as the crotch portion 15 of the pants sheath 10, and each medial lateral edge portion 16 of the diaper 11 directly overlies each lower edge portion 17 of the pants sheath crotch portion 15.
2,733,115 .Patented Feb. 7, 1956 While the medial edge portions 16 of the diaper pad' 11 thus are more or less permanently attached to the edges of the crotch portion 15 of the pants sheath 10, the end flap portions 19 and 19 of the diaper pad 11 are releasably fastened to the upper front edge portion 20 and the upper rear edge portion 21 respectively, of the pants sheath 10 by suitable releasable fastening means 22. Any of several types of fastening means may be employed for this purpose, but it is deemed preferable to use snap fasteners.
As seen in the various figures of the drawing, each fastener 22 consists of a female fastener portion 22a attached one to each of the four corners of the diaper flaps 19 and 19' and four male fasteners 22b mounted on the front and rear sides of the waist portion 23 of the pants sheath 10 to attach the flaps 19 and 19 snugly within the waist encircling portion 23, there being two male snap portions 22b at each side of the pants sheath 1!).
In order to make my combination garment A adaptable to infants of different sizes, I have provided three circumferential elastic bands 24, 24' and 24" attached to the inner side of the waist encircling portion 23 of the pants sheath and spaced apart vertically therein as shown in the various figures. The elastic bands 24, 24 and 24" are of a length to draw the waist portion 23 snugly about the waist of an infant of predetermined minimum circumference. The uppermost 24 of these three bands is sheathed within a turned-over hem 26 as best shown in the sectional view Fig. 5. The two lower bands 24' and 24" are exposed on the inside of the pants sheath but are covered by the diaper pad 11 when the garment A is in condition for wear as shown in Fig.1. As each of the two lowest elastic bands 24' and 24" is sewn in place, the bands are stretched, so that when released after sewing, the pants sheath material will be gathered or shirred so as to allow free extensibility of this material simultaneously with the stretching of the bands.
The steps involved in preparing the garment for cleaning after removal from the infant will be best understood by reference to Figs. 2 aiid 3. As shown in Fig. 2, the first step consists in disengaging the parts 22a and 22b of the snap fasteners 22 so that the diaper flaps 19 and 19' are free to be withdrawn from the interior of the pants sheath 10. By grasping and pulling upwardly on these flaps 19 and 19 and at the same time pullling downwardly the waist portion 23 of the pants sheath 1b, the pants sheath will be turned inside out, and the diaper pad 11 will be withdrawn completely from the pants sheath and exposed for laundering as shown in Fig. 3. After washing, which may be accomplished in a usual manner either by hand or machine, with the diaper pad 11 still removed from the pants sheath 10, the garment A may be hung by an end 19 or 19 of the diaper pad 11 from a clothes line 25 (Fig. 4). When thus hanging the garment up to dry, by running ones hand between the central portions of the diaper pad 11 and the crotch portion 15 of the pants sheath 16, the crotch portion 15 of the pants sheath and the central portion of the diaper pad 11 between the elastic strips 13 will be caused to bow outwardly away from each other due to the shirring or gathering of the diaper and pants sheath materials beneath the elastic bands 18. This allows a free flow of air between the diaper pad 11 and 3 i the pants sheath 10'" so that the entire garment A will dry quickly and easily.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the present invention, it will be understood, however, that various changes may be made in the exact details thereof within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is defined in the following claims.
I claim: 1
1. An infants garment comprising in combination, a pants sheath of Waterproof sheet material, said pants sheath having a crotch and a Waist portion, a rectangular diaper pad ofa size to line substantially the entire interior of said pants sheath, means attaching the diaper pad at its medial lateral edge portions for a limited length thereof to the lateral edge portions of the crotch of said pants sheath, elastic means gathering the attached medial edge and crotch portions, a pair of: end flaps of said diaper pad extending forwardly and rearwardly, respectively, from said medial attaching means, and means releasably fastening each of said flaps to the waist portion of said pants sheath.
