Description
June 21, 1955 w. BOOTH RECTAL AND VAGINAL APPLICATOR Filed June 19, 1952 II II II Ill/119%, 1/6 7 1/ l/ V/l/l/ II II II I INVENTOR W. l. BOOTH ATTORNEY United States Patent RECTAL AND VAGINAL APPLICATOR William Irving Booth, St. Petersburg, Fla. Application June 19, 1952, Serial No. 294,337
3 Claims. (Cl. 128-261) This invention relates to therapeutic devices and more particularly to a therapeutic device of the character employed for applying ointment to internal portions of the body.
Heretofore various types of devices have been employed in an effort to satisfactorily apply salve or ointment to the affected parts within the rectum or vagina. These devices have not been completely satisfactory for various reasons, including improper size and shape, as well as awkwardness or difficulty in using or manipulating, rendering their application of the salve or ointment ineffective.
In attempting to insert an instrument for therapeutic treatment into the rectum, the natural reaction is for the anal sphincter muscles to tighten and resist the operation.
in an effort to compensate, it is customary to coat the Z size and shape to be most satisfactorily employed for the use intended as well as one with a surface having a series of spaced knobs or protuberances and with a handle by means of which satisfactory manipulation of the device can be accomplished.
Further benefits and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective illustrating one application of the invention;
Fig. 2, a side elevation of an applicator of a slightly different character; and
Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Briefly stated, the invention comprises an elongated solid body, having a rounded surface having a handle at one end and with its opposite end rounded to facilitate its use. The body is provided over its surface with spaced knobs or protuberances designed to facilitate the deposit of salve or ointment from the surface of the body upon the treated parts.
With continued reference to the drawings, a relatively solid elongated body 10, having a rounded surface, and preferably cylindrical is provided and has a rounded end 11 and at its opposite end a handle 12. Such handle is located in an especially formed mounting portion 13. The body 10 may be made of any desired material, whether of wood, metal, rubber, Celluloid, plastic, synthetic material, or a combination of the above.
In order to facilitate the deposit of the salve or ointment to the affected parts of the cavity in which the device is applied, the body is provided with spaced knobs or protuberances 14, providing raised convex portions, the size and spacing of which is proportionate to the diameter of the body. As previously indicated, the body 10 may 7 be of any desired material, diameter and length, however, in Figs. 2 and 3 a longer body 10 is shown.
The handle 12 is particularly designed to give maximum leverage, to'facilitate handling, and to eliminate ing the rectum or vagina beyond the handle mounting means 13, and to facilitatethe introduction and rernoval of the applicator. The handle is provided with means for accommodating the fingers and with rounded end portions to prevent damage or discomfort to the skin around the rectum or vagina.
In the use of the structures, that of Fig. 1 is smaller, being designed for the application of salve, ointment or other soothing or medicinal substances to the walls of the rectum or the vagina by the mere application of the salve or ointment to the exterior of the device and then inserting the same, thereafter graspingthe end of the handle, a firm turning of the handle producing movement of a character to apply the salve or other substance thoroughly to the lining of the cavity, including to tears and fissures. Immediately after the turning of the handle is begun it will be gripped by the muscles and the handle will rotate until the gripping action of the muscles is caused to be relaxed and the presence of the knobs or protuberances will insure a thorough deposit of the ointment.
The body 10 is in the form of a shell having a rounded end 11' with a handle 12 located in a mounting portion 13 thereof. The shell of the body is provided with knobs or protuberances 14 and a solid core 15 is provided for filling the shell and this core may be of a similar or dissimilar material.
The use of the structures of Figs. 2 and 3 will be obvious in view of the above description.
It will likewise be apparent that the instrument may be used with or without the services of an attendant, the transversely pivoted handle permitting the solid gripping of the same and to conform to the configuration of the body at the desired-angle. As illustrated in Fig. 3, the
device may include a core with a cover therefor, in which event the core may be of relatively hard substances and the cover may be of somewhat softer material such as a suitable odor-resistant plastic.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A combination anal vaginal therapeutic instrument comprising a substantially solid cylindrical body with a rounded end, said body having spaced protuberances on its cylindrical surface and rounded end, the end of said body remote from said rounded end being provided with a diametrically disposed mounting portion, a handle located in said mounting portion having its dimension transverse to the body substantially greater than the diameter of the body and of a size and shape to accommodate the fingers of the user, said body being composed of a hollow shell and a solid core within and filling said shell and concealed by the latter.
2. A combination anal vaginal therapeutic instrument comprising a substantially solid cylindrical body one end of which is rounded, said body having spaced protuberances on its cylindrical surface and rounded end, the end of said body remote from said rounded end being provided with a diametrically disposed mounting portion, a handle located in said mounting portion having its dimension transverse to the body substantially greater than the diameter of the body and with rounded end portions and said handle being of a size and shape to accommodate the fingers of the user, said body being composed of a hollow shell and a solid core within and filling said shell and concealed by the latter.
3. A combination anal vaginal therapeutic instrument comprising a substantially cylindrical body rounded at one end and having spaced protuberances over its surface for intimate engagement with the wall of the cavity in which it is used and for depositing ointment onto such wall, the end of said body remote from its rounded end being provided with a diametrically disposed mounting portion, a handle located in said mounting portion transversely of said body and of a dimension substantially greater than 15 the fingers of the user.
