United States Patent '0 VISE MOUNTING PROVIDING TILTABLE AND ROTATABLE ADJUSTMENT This invention relates to the class of tools and more particularly to a novel vise mounting which has for its primary object the provision of means for holding a workpiece at various angles without shifting the hold on the workpiece, thus making it easy to work on material in either a horizontal, vertical or intermediate position and with a full 360 degree rotation of the workpiece possible.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a vise mounting having a novel base adapter for pivotal mounting on side plates of a base which form trunnions for the base adapter. Means associated with the side plates are provided for lockingly holding the base adapter and hence the vise in a selected angular position as may be desired.
The construction of this invention features a cruciformshaped base adapter having a recess opening into an aperture therethrough, and into which aperture extends a cylindrical support on a vise. A key is seated in the recess and threaded means are provided for urging the key into engagement within a groove in the cylindrical support carried by a fixed jaw of the vise. An additional feature includes the side plates functioning as trunnions which hold spaced sets of ears carrying fasteners for engaging the base adapter to lock the base adapter in either a vertical or horizontal position. Other means are utilized for additionally locking the base adapter in a selected position.
Still further objects and features of this invention reside in the provision of a vise mounting that is strong and durable, simple in construction and manufacture, which can be formed of various suitable material such as metal, wood, or the like, yet which is inexpensive to manufacture thereby permitting wide distribution and utilization.
These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this vise, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vise mounting comprising the present invention, a vise and the mounting being shown in an assembled state;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a base having a cruciform shaped base adapter shown pivotally mounted between oppositely disposed trunnions on the base, but secured in a vertical position, as contrasted to its horizontal position in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of the vise mounting showing in detail the means provided for keying a cylindrical vise support within the base adapter;
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view as taken along the plane of line 44 in Figure 3 illustrating in particular the construction of the base adapter;
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view as taken along the planes of line 5-5 in Figure 3; and
Figure 6 is an exploded perspective view of the various elements of the vise mounting, various pivoting and locking elements being omitted.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, 10 generally designates the present invention that includes a fixed vise jaw 12 to a lower side of which a cylindrical support 14 is secured. A conventional guide 18 extends through the fixed jaw 12 and adjustably mounts a movable jaw 16 ice by means of setscrews 20, the movable jaw 16 being advanced towards or away from the fixed jaw 12 by operation of a handle 22.
The cylindrical support 14 is provided with a peripheral groove 24 therein. The cylindrical support 14 is adapted to extend into an aperture 26 formed in a cruciform-shaped adapter 28 provided with a recess 30 which opens into the aperture 26. Positioned in the recess 30 is a key as can be best seen in Figure 4 and which is indicated by reference numeral 32. This key as well as a key 36 which fits into a recess 38 opposed to the recess 30 is adapted to be moved into clamping engagement with the cylindrical support 14 by means of threaded clamp elements 40 and 42 threadedly engaged in the base adapter 28. It is to be recognized that the cylindrical support 14 is freely rotatable within the base adapter 28 when the threaded clamp elements 40 and 42 are loosened. Thus the vise jaws 12 and 16can be rotated about the axis of support 14 and then clamped in any selected position.
The base adapter 28 is pivotally mounted on a base 44 which has substantially L- shaped side plates 46 and 48 integrally formed therewith. The side plates 46 and 48 have cylindrical projections 50 and 52 provided with coaxial apertures 54 and 56 therethrough through which threaded pins 58 and 60 extend, the pins being threadedly engaged in the base adapter 28 while being freely rotatable in the cylindrical projections 50 and 52. A recess 62 is also formed in the cylindrical projection 58 for reception of a spring pressed plunger 64 which is adapted to be selectively engaged within one of a plurality of recesses 66 formed in the base adapter 28 as can be seen in Figure 6. The spring pressed plunger 64 therefore is adapted to lockingly hold the base adapter 28 in a selected tilted position dependent upon the choice of a particular recess 66.
Integrally cast with the side plates 46 and 48 are spaced sets of cars 68 and 70, and 72 and 74. These ears are apertured and threaded for reception of suitable setscrews 76 which are adapted to selectively engage opposed projecting portions 78 and 80 of the base adapter 28 to lockingly hold the base adapter in either a vertical or in a horizontal position.
The base 44 is provided with a suitable base plate 82 for resting on a surface to-which the vise is adapted to be secured as well as projecting ears 84 and 86 extending from each of the side plates 46 and 48 and adapted to be utilized in securing the vise 44 to a suitable supporting surface 88 by means of fasteners as at 90.
As can be readily seen, the key connection between the cylindrical support 14 and the base adapter 28 permits rotation of the vise about the axis of support 14 throughout 360 degrees and the locking of the vise in any desired position. Further, the mounting of the base adapter 28 for pivotal movement about the common horizontal axis of pins 58 and 60 on the base 44 permits the horizontal to the base adapter and hence the vise to be tilted between a horizontal and a vertical position, locking cars 68, 70 (or 72, 74) and set screws 76, 76 enabling the vise to be locked in either of these positions and recesses 66 and plunger 64 permitting the vise to be locked in a selected intermediate position. Hence, this vise is highly flexible in operation.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A vise mounting comprising a fixed jaw having a cylindrical support depending therefrom, a base adapter, means detachably keying said cylindrical support within said base adapter, a base, means for pivotally mounting said base adapter on said base, said base including a pair of L-shaped side plates, spaced sets of ears secured to said side plates, fasteners carried by said ears for engaging said base adapter to lock said base adapter in a selected position with respect to a horizontal axis, said base-- adapter being of cruciform shape and having a central aperture therethrough for mounting said cylindrical support for rotation about its longitudinal axis, said base adapter having a recess opening into said aperture, said cylindrical support having a peripheral groove, said keying means including a key carried in said recess, and means thrcadedly engaged in said base adapter to urge said key into said peripheral groove in said cylindrical support to hold said cylindrical support in any position to which it has been rotated.
2. A vise mounting comprising a fixed jaw having a cylindrical support depending therefrom, a base adapter, means detachably keying said cylindrical support within said base adapter, a base, means pivotally mounting said base adapter on said base, said base including a pair of L-shaped side plates, spaced sets of ears secured to said side plates, fasteners carried by said ears for engaging said base adapter to lock said base adapter in a selected position with respect to a horizontal axis, said means including a pair of coaxial trunnions formed on said L- shaped side plates and including pins threadedly engaged in said base adapter and rotatably mounted in said trunnions, said base adapter having a plurality of arcuately spaced recesses, and a spring pressed pin slidably mounted in one of said side plates one of said recesses.
3. A vise mounting as recited in claim 1, said base adapter mounting means including a pair of coaxial trunnions formed on said L-shaped side plates and including pins threadedly engaged in said base adapter and rotatably mounted in said truuuions, said base adapter having a plurality of arcuately spaced recesses, and a spring pressed pin slidably mounted in one of said side plates and selectively engageable in one of said recesses.
