My present invention relates to a door lock particularly adapted for outside doors.
One of the principal objects of this invention is to provide a door look, or loch structure, which may be easily installed in doors of varying thickness without the requirement of great accuracy in tting, and also a lock structure in which the separate units are self-contained and may be easily and. quickly assembled within the door from the various sides thereof to provide the complete lock.
Another' important object 'of this invention is to provide a lock structure in which the separate units, to be assembled .into the complete lock, are sturdy ei construction and may not be readily disassembled, or will not readily get out of order.
An important object also or this invention is to provide a lock structure of this class having three vseparate and separately controllable latchoperatingT spindles, all of which terminate at and are arranged to move or operate a single latch or bolt means.
A further important object of this invention is to provide a lock which as a whole is relatively simple, economical, and novel of construction.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear hereinafter, l, have devised a door lock having certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and portions, as will be hereinafter described in detail, "1

My door lock in a preferred form, as shown in the drawings, is arranged in three separate units or assemblies, which are hereinafter referred to as rthe bolt or latch assembly A, the outer door 2 knob unit B, and the inner door knob unit C. They are thus arranged so that they may be readily mounted and assembled within the door D.
The door is provided with a horizontal bore D1 extending inwardly from its outer edge for receiving and locating the bolt or latch assembly A. The housing i ci the bolt or latch assembly is provided at its outer end with a plate 2 which is adapted to be positioned in a recess D2 at the outer end o the bore D1. The plate 2 may be secured. in this recess by screws 3. The door has a transverse bore D3 for receiving and locating the mechanism of the lock.
As shown, the outer door knob unit has at its inner end a cage ll which nts into the bore D3 from the outer side of the door, and it has at one side a longitudinal slot formed between ledges ila which are adapted to fit into a pair of parallel slots ia at the upper and lower sides of the inner end of the housing l, for locking the cage ll with respect to the housing l. These ledges Ila may slide into the slots l'f1 from the outer side of the door. The cage ll has van escutcheon plate l2 at its outer side which is positioned against the outer side of the door. The outer knob i3 .has an inwardly and axially extending hub lil which is rotatably mounted within the escutcheon plate 2 and is rotatably retained with respect to the escutcheon plate by an arcuate key portion iZ"-, as shown in Figs. 2 and fl.
The inner knob unit C consists of a knob 5l having a hub Sla, from the inner end of which axially and non-rotatably extends an inner spindle 52. The portion of the spindle immediately inwardly from the hub dla, has a reduced portion 52a which extends through and is rotatably mounted on an inner escutcheon plate 53, which is positioned against the inner side of the door D and is secured to the inner end of the cage i l by means o1" screws Elfi.
In the housing l of the bolt or latch assembly A is mounted a bolt and a boltactuating men.- ber 5, the former extending beyond the plate 2 of the housing l and the latter beyond the rear end of the housing. The bolt i and actuating member 5 are so arranged that as the actuating member E is forced outwardly the bolt l is drawn inwardly, such reverse movement being effected by a rocker ll. The bolt i is forced outwardly by the spring 'l acting against the actuating member 5. The construction of the bolt unit or assembly is more specifically illustrated and described in my co-pending patent application 'Serial No. 608,160 of which this is a continuation- ,in-part, cc-pending patent application having since issued as Patent No. 2,544,959.
The inner end of the actuating member 5 has anges or ears Si@ 5b which extend laterally in opposite directions. as shown in Figs. l and 2, for both restricting; and facilitating the outward forcing or" the actuating member 5 and the withdrawing of the bolt 5.
The outer knob unit B. which is best illustrated in the exploded View of 7fig. 5. carries. two spindles, designated spindle .member i5 and lock-operated spindle the spindle i6 being broadly a key actuable member. The spindle member i5 is non-rotatable with respect to the outer knob i3. The spindle member Iii is rotatable relative to both the spindle member l5 and to the outer knob.

The normally outer end of the spindle member l5 extends into a longitudinal channel IM. of se:fui-circulan.` cross-section. in the hub .Hi for locking theA spindle member and the hoh nonro tatably with respect to each other. The outer end of the spindle member has a circumferential groove l5@ in which. is positioned a retaining ring il for locking the spindle member against,
movement axially inwardly within the hub of the outer knob. the ringY l1 hearing against a semicircular shoulder Mb within the hub.
The knob and spindle member are assembled with the cage by inserting the hub of the knob through the escutcheon plate from the outside and by inserting the spindle member through the cage and escutchenn plate from the inside.
On the wall of the opening through the escutcheon plate there is formed the inwardly extending arcuate key portion or keying ange Iza and a slot l2b extends through the kev portion. The .inner end of the hub is also provided with a key portion Mc and this last identied kev portion is adapted to slide through the slot Iib when the huh is inserted in the opening. hub is thereafter rotated 45 degrees, the key portion USC will be locked behind the key portion |234. .A circumferential groove IM at the inner end of the hub and adjacent the key portion Mc receives the key portion l2@ in assembled position.
At the time the hub it is inserted through the escutcheon plate from the outside the outer end of the spindle member is extended through the escutchecn plate from the inside and at the same time is extended into the hub. A lug 15d protrudes laterally outwardly from the convex side of the spindle member. When the spindle member is pushed as far in as it will go, the lug ld will abut the inside face of the escutcheon plate and also the inside wall of the keying portion E28 which is :flush with the face. Therefore, when the retaining ring il is snapped into place, the ring il and lug ld will hold the spindle member against endwise movement in the hub.
Since the semi-circular end of the hub I4 and the adjacent semi-circular end of the spindle member are of the same radius, longitudinal edges of the hub will bear against corresponding edges of the spindle member when assembled, as best seen in Figure ll. The knob, hub and spindle when the @i member assembly consequently rotate as a unit.
A locking member lil is recprocally mounted in a transverse direction in a channel Hb at the end of the cage l! adjacent the escutcheon plate i2. The channel l Ib extends continuously through the longitudinal opening provided between the longitudinal ledges iin. The opposite sides of the locking member i8 have lugs 13b which slide in channels HC within the walls of the channel Hb. In the channels l lc are located compression springs I9, the ends of which engage the lugs I8b and normally urge the locking inember in a direction toward the right, when viewed, as shown in Fig. 5, or to the side opposite the one having the longitudinal opening between the ledges l la.
The locking member i8 has a hollow lateral extension Etc at the side opposite the portion 18e. This hollow portion ISG is best shown in Fig. '7. At the inner side of the hollow portion 98 is a locking lug ltd which is normally urged by the springs I9 to enter, from the radially outer side, a recess 14e located within the key portion MC of the hub. rhus, in its normal position, the locking member 8 prevents the outer knob I3 from rotatng.
In the cage l i is provided a hole I le. This hole is parallel to the axis of the cage and is located at the side opposite the opening between the ledges Ha. In this hole is reciprocally mounted a. locking plunger 2), the outer end of which extends through a hole 53a in the inner escutcheon plate 53. The locking plunger is normally urged outwardly from the hole Ile by a spring 2l, the spring engaging a shoulder 2te on the plunger 2@ which is limited by a shoulder or upset portions llf at the outer end of the hole H0. Near the inner end, and at one side of the plunger, is provided a transverse slot 2Gb, the portion immediately inwardly from the solt providing a seat 26C which normally engages the outer side of the cross portion lila of the locking member and holds the same against the compression of the springs i9. When the plunger i is pressed inwardly from the inner side of the door, that is, when it is pressed toward the outer side of the door, the slot 2Gb is forced opposite the cross portion lila, and the springs I9 urge the locking member into the slot l lb and the lug 58d into the recess Ide, thereby locking the outer knob against rotation. When the Across portion Ita enters the slot 261 of the plunger 2), the latter is held in its inward position against the action of the spring 2l until it is released from the outside of the door by the lockoperated spindle IG.
The outer end of the lock-operated spindle is rotatably mounted axially within a cage 22 which contains lock-operating tumblers, not shown. Such tumbler arrangement for the lock is shown in Patent No. 2,544,959. The cage has diametrically opposed wings 22au which extend into conforming recesses (not shown) within the outer knob i3 to lock the cage 22 against rotation with respect to the outer knob. The cage Z2 has at its outer side a plate 22h which serves as a cover for the recess at the axially outer side of the outer knob i3 in which the cage 22 is located.
To facilitate the insertion of the lock-operated spindle I6, the spindle is rotated in a locked position with respect to the cage 22, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 5. The latch-operated portion |621, which is of semi-circular cross-section, is then inserted through the axial opening of the hub and with the fiat portion of the latch-operating portion Ita against the at face of the spindle aeeaase I door, a spindle in non-rotatable engagement with the knob and extending from the knob into the cage and forming with the knob a knob assembly, a locking member slidably mounted Within the cage in a direction transverse to the `axis of the spindle, said spindle extending through said locking member, said spindle being provided with a portion of semi-circular cross-section and provided in the plane face ci the semi-circular crosssection with concentric semi-circular recesses positioned end to end, one at the extended end of the spindle and the other adjacent the knob and of less diameter than the former recess, a key-operated spindle located coaxially within the knob and coaxially with and rotatable relative to the iirst spindle, the key-operated spindle having a latch-operating portion located Within the larger recess of the first spindle and having a shank, extending through the smaller recess, connecting the latch-operating portion with the knob, the latch-operating portion o the key-operated spindle being also of semi-circular cross-section with the plane face thereof located normally substantially within the plane of the corresponding face of the nrst spindle, a latch housing extending from the cage, bolt means mounted in the latch housing and having at its inner end a portion extending between the locking member and the plane faces of the spindles, said locking member having lug means adapted to assume an interlocked relationship with the knob assembly, spring means normally urging the locking member and knob assembly in interlocking relation, catch means having a position of engagement with the locking member enabling a shifting of the lug means o the locking member to a position in engagement with said knob assembly to prevent rotation of the knob assembly, said key-operated spindle being operable to shift the locking member transversely whereby to effect disengagement of said lug means and release of the catch means from engagernent with said locking member, and a spring adapted to urge said catch means to a position for holding the lug means of said locking member out of engagement with the knob assembly.
4. ln a lock structure, a cage adapted to be fitted in a door, an outer knob rotatably mounted on the outer side of the cage and adapted to extend from the outer side of the door, a spindle extending from the outer knob into the cage, said spindle being provided with a portion of semi-circular cross-section and provided in the plane face of the semi-circular cross-section with concentric semi-circular recesses positioned end to end, one at the inwardly extended end of the spindle the other adjacent the outer knob and of less diameter than the former recess, a key-operated spindle located coaxially within the outer knob and coaxially With and rotatable relative to the first spindle, the key-operated spindle having a latch-operating portion located within the larger recess of the rst spindle and having a shank, extending through the smaller recess, connecting the latch-operating portion with the outer knob, the latch-operating portion of the keyoperated spindle being also of semi-circular cross-section with the plane face thereof located normally substantially within the plane of the corresponding face of the first spindle, a latch housing operatively associated with the cage, vbolt means mounted in the latch housing and having at its inner end a portion extending to a location adjacent the plane faces of the spindles, an
cscutcheon plate at the inner side of the cage for engaging the inner side of the door, an inner knob rotatably mounted on the escutcheon plate, and another spindle non-rotatably secured at one end to the inner knob and provided at its inner end with a latch-operating portion of semicircular cross-section lying also within the larger recess of the i'irst spindle and with the plane face of the latter latch-operating portion located no1'- mally substantially within the plane of the corresponding face of the rst spindle.
5. rin a lock structure, a cage adapted to be iitted in a door, an outer knob rotatably mounted on the outer side of the cage and adapted to eX- tend from the outer side of the door, a spindle extending from the outer knob into the cage and forming with the knob a knob assembly, a locking member slidably mounted within the cage in a direction transverse to the axis of the spindle, said spindle extending through said locking member, said spindle being provided with a portion of semi-circular cross-section and provided in the plane face of the semi-circular cross-section with concentric semi-circular recesses positioned end to end, one at the inwardly extended end of the spindle and the other adjacent the outer knob and of less diameter than the former recess, a key-operated spindle located coaxially within the outer knob and coaxially with and rotatable relative to the rst spindle, the key-operated spindle having a latch-operating portion located within the larger recess of the iirst spindle and having a shank, extending through the smaller, recess, connecting the latch-operating portion with the outer knob, the latch-operating portion of the key-operated spindle being also of semi-circular cross-section with the plane face thereof located normally substantially within the plane of the corresponding face of the rst spindle, a latch housing associated with the cage, bolt means mounted in the latch housing and having at its inner end a portion extending between the locking member and the plane faces of the spindles, an escutcheon plate at the inner side of the cage for engaging the inner side of the door, an inner knob rotatably mounted on the escutcheon plate, another spindle non-rotatably secured at one end to the inner knob and provided at its inner end with a latch-operating portion of semi-circular cross-section lying also within the larger recess of the rst spindle and with the plane face of the latter latch-operating portion located normally substantially within the plane of the corresponding face of the rst spindle, said locking member having lug means normally adapted to assume an interlocked relationship with the knob assembly, and means adjacent the inner knob for holding the lug in disconnected position from the knob assembly.

In a latch structure a cage having an opening extending longitudinally therethrough and having a laterally open aperture in the wall of the cage communicating with the opening, a latch housing slidably engaging the cage at the edges of the aperture and latch bolt means in the latch housing including a latch bolt actuating member, said actuating member extending from the inside end oi the latch housing into the cage, a knob in rotatable engagement with the cage, said knob including a circumferentially extending portion having a longitudinally disposed abutment and a key on said portion projecting laterally outward, said cage having on the wall of the opening therethrough an inwardly projecting arcuate keying flange and having a slot through the flange adapted to have the key extend therethrough during assembly, said key in assembled position being positioned behind the keying flange for retaining the knob on the cage, a separate arcuate spindle received endwise in the knob in position fixed against endwise movement relative to the knob, said spindle having a portion thereof at a location on the knob in opposed relation to the abutment and in non-rotatable relationship with the knob, a cylinder lock in the knob having an axially disposed shank extending therefrom and a latch operating portion on said shank, said shank being freely insertable in the knob in one position oi rotation and being in endwise nonreleasable engagement with the spindle member throughout other positions of rotation, said latch bolt actuating member having a position of rotation limiting engagement with the spindle member and the latch operating portion of the shank whereby the cage, knob, cylinder lock and spindle member are interlocked in assembled relation,

In a lock structure a cage, a latch housing, said cage having an aperture receiving the housing, said housing having a slidable connection with the cage at the sides oi the aperture during assembly and the housing extending laterally outwardly from the cage, latch bolt means in said housing including a latch bolt actuating member and said actuating member extending from the housing into the cage, an outside knob in rotatable engagement with the cage having a spindle non-rotatably nxed thereto iorming an outside knob assembly, said spindle having a latch operating portion within the cage for actuation of said actuating member, a cylinder lock in the outer knob having a shank anchored theretov and said shank extending into the cage adjacent to the spindle and adapted to rotate relative to the spindle, said cage having a transversely extending aperture adjacent the engagement of the outside knob with the cage, a locking member comprising a centrally apertured yoke transversely slidable in said aperture and surrounding the shank and the spindle, a spring between the locking member and the cage adapted to urge the locking member transversely of the cage, a lug on the locking member and means on the outside knob forming arecess for the lug, said lug comprising a releasable spring pressed engagement' 13 between the locking member and the outside knob assembly, a reciprocating looking plunger extending from the cage outwardly on the side of the structure opposite said outside knob normally spring pressed to unlocked position having a slot 5 inside knob and said cylinder lock to disengage the locking member from the outside knob assem- -bly and from the looking plunger.
