This invention relates to anartificial. breast, and more particularly to an artificial breast for women.

This application is a divisional application of our parent application, Serial No. 128,974, filed November 23, 1949 now Patent 2,580,264.

The object of the invention is to provide an artificial breast for attachment to the body of a woman in order to take the place of a breast that has been removed, as by surgery.

Another object of the invention is to provide an artificial breast which has the same shape and configuration as the natural breast, the artificial breast being constructed of light weight material and adapted to be readily cleaned with soap and water, the artificial breast of the present invention giving the wearer the same breast appearanc as she possessed before one of the breasts was removed.

Still another object of the invention is to provide an artificial breast which can be comfortably worn for an indefinite length of time without irritating the woman's or girls skin, and wherein the artificial breast will not readily deteriorate during use.

A further object of the invention is to provide an artificial breast which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.

Other objects and advantages of the invention wiil be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:

Figure 1 is a front elevational view showing a woman with one of her breasts removed, as from a mastectomy;

Figure 2 is a front elevational view showing the artificial breast constructed according to the present invention in position on the womans body;

Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 2;

Figure 4 is a vertical, sectional view taken through the finished artificial breast;

Figure 5 is a side elevational view of the completed artificial breast;

Figure 6 is a rear elevational view of the artificial breast.

Referring in detail to the drawings, there is shown an artificial breast which is adapted to be used to replace a breast that has been removed, as by surgery. Thus, referring to Figure 1, there is shown a portion of a womans body H] which includes a normal or natural right breast II, the

other left breast having been previously removed, the scars 62 being an indication of the position that the left breast formerly occupied.

By means of the present invention, an artificial breast is provided, whereby a womans body will have a natural appearance so that the woman can live a normal life without being self-conscious as a result of the loss of a breast. The method of forming the artificial breast of the present invention is shown and described in detail in our copending application.

The artificial breast of the present invention is indicated generally by the numeral l3, and t. e artificial breast It includes an outer casing hi which is made of a flexible material, such as rubber. Th casing M has projecting from the front thereof nipples l5, Figure 4, and arranged within the casing M is a quantity of suitable flexible material, such as ground sponge rubber I6.

Secured to the rear of the casing I l, as by glue or cement, is a back member 5?. The back member H has its rear surface cut away, as at 58, so as to compensate for the scars l2 in the wornans body when the artificial breast is being used. The lower portion of the breast is provided with a flange i 9, and the flange I9 helps to maintain the artificial breast in its proper position. The breasts of the present invention may be held in place by the brassiere, and after the breast is worn for half an hour it acquires the body temperature so that a slight adhesion to the body is provided, and the warm fiesh-like feeling of the breast is especially convenient.

From the foregoing it is apparent that an artificial breast has been provided which has a shape or configuration that corresponds to the breast that has been removed from the womans body. The breast It may be filled with ground sponge rubber l6, and the casing I l and back member ll may be connected together by cement, and the artificial breast may be held in place by a brassire. The ground sponge rubber It provides the necessary weight and feeling of gland tissue, and the drooping artificial breast I3 molds itself to any brassiere cup in the same manner as the natural breast molds itself.

The artificial breast of the present invention can be worn for an indefinite period of time without causing any discomfort to the user, and further, there will be no skin irritation. The artificial breast may be worn in swimming under a strapless brassire without any absorption of water, and the artificial breast may be readily cleaned with a mild soap and water so as to insure proper personal cleanliness. be pulled out of position when the arm is raised or with any movement of the body, and the artificial breast is individually designed to fit the scar tissues l2 and may be worn in any type of brassire, since it molds itself to the cup thereof.

The artificial breast of the present invention has perfect contour, insures definite nipple alignment, is of proper weight, and the artificial breast can be easily cleaned. The wearing qualities of the prosthesis of the present invention are excellent, and the prosthesis will not deteriorate as rapidly as a prosthesis made solely out of sponge rubber or cloth.

We claim:

1. In an artificial breast having the configuration of a womans breast that has been removed from the woman's body, a rubber outer casing having a nipple projecting from the front thereof, a rubber back member secured to the rear of said casing, said back member being cut away so as to compensate for scars and the like on the womans body, a flange arranged on the lower end of said breast, and ground sponge rubber arranged in said casing, said flange extending below the bottom of said casing.

2. In an artificial breast having the configuration of a Womans breast that has been removed, a rubber outer casing having a nipple projecting from the front thereof, a rubber back member secured to the rear of said casing, said back member being cut away so as to compensate for scars and the like on the woman's body, and ground sponge rubber arranged in said casing, said breast being waterproof and flexible.
