1 Claim. ('Cl. 248-206) This invention relates to asuction fastening device for holding parts together in apposition or for securing an article to a supporting surface.'
The invention has in view a suction fastening device which is adapted to be secured to and to cover an extended area of a sup-porting body for holding parts thereof in adjacent relation or for supporting an article thereby and which is constructed and arranged to permit of the convenient removal of the fastening device from the supporting body.
More particularly, the invention comprehends a suction fastening device consisting of a flexible resilient member having a plurality of vacuum cups on one face thereof which are provided with apertures opening vinto the vacuuml cups and through the outer face of said member together with an impervious backing adhesively secured to said member in sealing relation with the outer ends of ksaid apertures and which backing is adapted to be removed for breaking the suction created by the vacuum cups.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a suction fastening device of said character in strip or elongated formation in which the vacuum cups are integrally formed therewith and disposed in longitudinally spaced rows to permit of the same being secured on opposite sides of a parting in a body to hold the opposite edges thereof in apposition.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1- is a plan view of a suction fastening device constructedin accordance with the invention and illustrating the same with two rows of-vauum cups. l y
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View taken approximately on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken approximately on line 3-3 of Fig. l.l
Fig. 4 is a plan View of a suction fastening device constructed in accordance with the invention and having means for fastening Fig. 5 is a side view thereof. Referring to the drawings by characters of an article thereto.
l reference, the suction fastening device illustrated in Figs. l to 3 thereof consists of a flexible elastic strip I0 having a plurality of vacuum cups II formed integrally therewith and projecting outwardly from one face thereof. The vacuum cups II are relatively closely spaced andv have their Z outer edges I2 disposed in a common plane parallel with the strip I0.- The strip I il' is formed with apertures I3 which open through the outer face thereof and through the opposite face into the cups I I at the center thereof.
In order to normally retain the apertures I3 in closed formation, an air impervious flexible backing I4 is adhesively secured to the outer face of the strip I Il in covering relation with the aper- Y turesl I3. The backing I4 may be fashioned of i any preferred air impervious material such as rubberized `sheeting which is secured to the strip III by a gum adhesive which retains its adhesive quality for a long period of time and will secure the backing to the strip soas to retain the suction created by the vacuum cups. The backing I4 extends beyond the end of the strip II) whereby the same may be conveniently grasped for removing the backing therefrom as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings to thereby admit air into the vacuum cups through the'apertures I3. The strip IU may thus be readily removed from the supporting body without exerting a pull to break the suction produced by the vacuum cups. As illustrated, this form of fastening device includes two parallel rows of vacuum cups which are spaced apart so that the strip may be applied in covering relation with a parting such as a cut or incision A in a body B to hold the opposite edges of the parting in apposition.
In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, the fastening device is adapted for use for supporting articles hung thereon. Forsuch use the backing 20 is'provided with aplurality of hooks 2I secured thereto in longitudinallyV spaced relation, the backing having av slow-drying adhesive on the inner face thereof which is disposed in covering relation with the openings 22 in the exible elastic strip 23 and which open through `theopposite faces thereofv centrally of the suction cups'24. Y
The flexible elastic strip 23 is adapted to be secured by the suction cups to any desired sup- ,porting surface with the hooks 2| projecting outwardly from the backing 20 for receiving articles hung thereon.
What is claimed is:
In a suction fastening device, an 'elongated strip of flexible elastic material having a plurality of suction cups formed integrally therewith and projecting outwardly on one side thereof with the outer edges of the cups disposed in a common plane, said .strip having aperturesl opening vthrough the outer face thereof and through the innerface centrally of said cups respectively, and
