11 Claims. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for exercising machines, and more particularly to attachments for exercising machines of the type and construction disclosed in United States Letters Patent for Exercising Machine No. 2,565,348, issued August 21, 1951.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an attachment for exercising machines of the type described which, when used in conjunction with such machines, effectively provides for the exercise and stretching of the muscles in the arms of a person, and particularly the muscles which control bending of the elbow.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment for exercising machines of the stated type which may be readily adjusted to meet the needs of individuals with functional limitations as well as the requirements of different sizes of persons.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment having the foregoing features and characteristics which is of relatively simplified construction and highly efficient and effective in use.
These and other objects of the invention and the various features and details of the construction and usethereof are hereinafter fully set forth and described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a view in perspective showing an attachment made according to the present invention in cooperating association with an exercising machine of the aforesaid type and construction;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the attachment; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view in reduced scale on line 3-3, Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, an attachment made in accordance with the present invention is shown in conjunction with an exercising machine of the construction described in United States Letters Patent No. 2,565,348, aforesaid. Such a machine embodies a hollow base structure In including a continuous enclosing side wall portion, a relatively fixed seat 12 and a mounting means 13 which is mounted for oscillatory movement toward and away from the seat I2 and adapted for mounting thereon a handle structure (not shown).
An attachment made in accordance with the present invention comprises a base plate 15 which is adapted to rest upon the floor-and underlie the forward end portion of the machine base It, for example, in the relation shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Provided on the upper surface of the base plate I5 is a plurality of suitably arranged clamping devices constructed and arranged as described in applicants co-pending application Serial No. 202,949, filed December 27, 1950, for securing the attachment fixedly with respect to the base H3 of the exercising machine. Secured adjacent the outer end of the base plate l5 and inclined outwardly with respect to the exercising machine is an upstanding tubular stanchion that is braced by means of angular- 1y extending elements 2|, 2! which have their upper ends secured to the stanchion 20 and their lower ends secured to the base plate l5.
Telescopically received within the tubular stanchion 20 is a stud 22. The stud 22 is adjustable in the stanchion 20 and this is accomplished by providing a series of openings in the stud and a corresponding opening in the stanchion 20 for passage of a pin 23 through a selected opening in the stud 22.
Pivotally connected to the upper end of the justably mounted on the mounting means 13 a split sleeve or collar 25 having a set screw 21 therein for securing the sleeve or collar 26 in a selected position on the means connected, as indicated at 28, to a boss 29 on the sleeve or collar 25 is one end of a shaft member 3!] which has its other-end portion telescopically received within one end of a tubular member 3! that is split and provided. with a set screw 32 for securing the shaft and tubular members and 3|, respectively, in a selected telescopic relation with respect to each other. The other end of the tubular member 3! is pivotally connected as at 33 to a boss 34 on a split collar 35 which is mounted on the rod support 25 and provided with a set screw 33 for locking the collar 35 in any desired position for adjustment lengthwise along said rod support 25.
Telescopically received within the upper end of the rod support 25 is the shank portion 3'! of a handle bar 38 which is provided with hand grip portions 39 'on its opposite ends. The shank 31 of the handle 38 is adjustable telescopically with respect to the rod support 25 and this is accomplished by providing a series of openings in I 3. Pivotally the shank portion 31 and an opening in the rod support 25 for the passage of a pin 40 through a selected one of the openings in the handle stud 31.
The attachment is used in the manner illustrated in Fig. l of the drawing of an exercising machine of the type referred to previously herein. By selective: adjustment of the handle shank 31 in rod support 25 and of stud 22 in the stanchion 20, the attachment may be properly set according to the size of the particular person the telescopio connection of .themembers Ell-and.
fit-With respect to each other, the position of' the rodisupport fiiandhandie 38, angularly to the rightand left of the position shown in Fig. 2 ofthe drawing, maybe? varied within the limits of extension andcontraction of the telescopically adjustable members" 30. and 31: When the attachment has been properly adjusted for the size of the person and forrthe' desired arc of oscillatory movementao'tthe' handle 38, as described, the person intending to use the device sitsbeside' the-attachment, as shown in Fig. 1, and places' hisor-herhand on one of'th'e hand grips 39 of the handle 38. The motor ofithe exercising machine may then' bestarted and 1e resulting oscillatory movement imparted to: the handle' 33 f the attachment operates effec tively to" exercise and: stretch the muscles in the persons arm.
While a particularembodim'ent of theinventionhas been illustrated and described herein it isnot intended that the invention be limited to such disclosure and'changes and modifications may be madewithin the scope of the following claims.
