vThis invention relates to dispensing containers for labels and the like and more particularly toan improved container which is light in weight, easy to manufacture and which is effective for the dispensing of labels as required.
In certain fields of merchandising, for the purpose of marking the goods, a variety of different gummed labels is employed. If the label contains the name of the particular product, a stock of different labels must be available for labellin each of the products thus identified. The storage of assorted groups of labels has hereto-fore proved troublesome. In many instances, injury to the labels has occurred by soiling. Other spoilage has also occurred.
It is the principal object, therefore, of the present invention to provide a dispensing container which is particularly adapted to contain a plurality of gummed labels and the like, and. in which the face of the label to be dispensed is displayed for identification and ready for dispensing.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a dispensing container for gummed labels and the like having improved provisions for'maintaining the stock of labels therein in position for successive dispensing of individual labels.
It is a. further object of the present invention to provide a dispensing container for gummed labels and the like in which the labels are resiliently advanced and held for dispensing, and in which the degree of resiliency may be varied, if and as desired.
Other objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the specification and claims.
The nature and characteristic features of the invention will be more readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of the blank or sheet from which the container is made, the same being shown in the flat condition before being set up;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the dispensing container in accordance with the present invention;
' Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional viewtaken approximately on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. I
It should, of course, be understood that the description and drawings herein are illustrative merely, and that various modifications and changes may be made in the structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the drawings and more particularly to Fig. l, the sheet or blank I0 from which the dispensing container is assembled is therein illustrated, the same preferably being made from suitable paperboard or the like- The sheet or blank I0 preferably includes a side wall panel II having joined thereto, along a longitudinal crease line l2, another side wall panel I3, and joined thereto along another longitudinal crease line I4, arallel to the crease line [2, a side wall panel I5 similar to the side wall panel I3.
The panel II also has joined thereto, along a,
transverse crease line I6, an end wall panel [1,, and joined thereto along a transverse crease line:
l8, parallel to the crease line l6, another end wall panel I9. Each of the side wall panels I35 and I5 has one edge thereof, which is formed as an extension of the crease line l8, with a, cutaway portion to provide a tongue 20 which functions as an anchor tongue or abutment, with recesses 2| on each side of the tongue 2Il.
Each of the wall panels I3 and I5 is also provided, intermediate the edge having the tongue 20 and an opposite edge which is formed as an extension of the crease line I6, with a slit 2H1. The slit 2!!! is preferably of arcuate shape to provide a tongue 22, which functions as an anchor tongue or abutment, in each of the panel sections [3 and I5.
'The side panel section I3 preferably has a tab 23 joined thereto, along a longitudinally extending crease line 24, the crease line 24 having a slit 25 therein. One edge 26 of the locking tab 23 is cut. back from the contiguousedge lineof the panel section l3 for purposes to be explained.
The wall panel section I5 preferably has a wall panel 21 joined thereto along a longitudinal crease line 28 parallel to the crease lines l2 and M, has an edge portion 29 preferably formed as a continuation of the edge of the contiguous panel section l5, and is provided with a cutaway portion 30 along the opposite edge thereof offset inwardly from the contiguous edge of the panel IS. The panel 21 is also preferably provided, along the edge opposite from the crease line 28, with a locking tongue 3| which is adapted for insertion in the slit 25 along the crease line 24 when the container is in set up condition.
The end panel section I! is preferably provided, along longitudinal crease lines 32 and 33 formed as extensions of the crease lines l2 and I4, with side tabs 34 and 35, and along a transverse crease line 36,, parallel to thecrease line IS, with a closing tab 31.
The end panel I9 is provided with an opening, 40, preferably centrally located for visual observation of the labels presented thereto and for manual withdrawal of the labels, one at a. time, as hereinafter explained.
The end panel I9 preferably has joined thereto, along crease lines 4| and 42' formed as extensions of the crease lines I2 and M, side tabs 43 and 44, and connected thereto by a crease line 45 parallel to the crease line l8, a spacer tab 46 which is adapted to be folded flatagainst the inner side of the end panel |9: Each of the side tabs 43- and 44isprovided along the crease lines 4| and 42 with a slotted portion to provide a tongue 41, which functions as an anchor tongue or abutment,- withrecesses 480m each side there-- of, preferably conforming in shape and location when assembled to the tongues 20 and recesses 2| inthe panel sections [3 and I5.
Referring now more particularly to Figs. 2, 3 and 4- ofthe drawings, in which the dispensing container is shown in setup condition; to efiect this the side tabs E i and 35 are preferably bent at right angles to the end panel-3T along the crease-lines-32 and 33.- The end panell1 is -ben't. along the-crease line It at right angles to the panel H and, the sidetabs 34 and 35 are connected'to the interiorsurfacesof the side wall panels |3;and-|5- by gluing or thelike'; The side tabs 43' and-44 are preferably also bent along thecrease lines 4| and 42, the end panel I9 is bent" along the crease line l8 and the side tabs-43 and.

The tab 31 may- 4 through which labels may be individually withdrawn as desired.
When the stack of labels 5| substantially fills the container, dependent upon the length of the band 50, the tension of the band 50 is ordinarily sufficient to hold the labels in engagement with the interior of the end panel section l9 and the tab 46 carried thereby. The labels may then be separately withdrawn through the slot 52 between the edge of the side panel section 21 and the end panel section I9 by sliding the same upon frictional engagement by the fingers with the outermost label am at the opening 40. If, as labels are successively withdrawn, the tension is not sufficient to maintain the outermost label in engagement with the interior of the end panel IS, the band may be stretched and hooked over one or both of the intermediate tongues 22 thereby increasing the tension of the band 5|] and the force exerted on the stack 5| of labels to urge the same into successive engagement with the end panel section IQ for Withdrawal.
The outermost label 5|a, at the opening 40, may have the desired price indicia or Weight indicia, or both, marked thereon by the user with pencilor crayonprior to the Withdrawal of the label through theslot 52 if desired, the tension of th'eband 59 being sufiicient'for this purpose.
I claim:
1. A blank for a'dispensing'container formed from a single piece of flexible sheet material and having a first rectangular sidewall panel, a rectan'gular abutment end' wall panel'joined at one longitudinal edge thereof to said first side wall panel along a longitudinal crease'line, said abutment end wall panel having a central opening therein and an'abutment tab along another longitudinal edge thereof, gluing tabs joined to said abutment panel along transverse marginal edges thereof, said gluing tabs having edge cuts providing'anchor tongues therein, additional rectangular'side wall panels join'ed'to said first side wall panel along transverse" crease lines and adapted for engagement by said gluing tabs, said additional side wall panels'havin'g anchor tongues formed therein for alinement with said firstmentioned anchor tongues, and a closure sidewall panel hingedly' connected to'one of' said additional side wall panels, said closure side wall panel having"a-longitudin'almargincut back to provide a slot at said other longitudinal edge of said abutment wall panel.
2. A blank as defined in claim 1 in which the additional. side wall panels: have additional anchor tongues forme dtherein.
3. Ina dispensing container ofpaperboard having opposite pairs ofexterior side wall panels and exterior end wall panels and a slot in one ofsaid side Wall panels of one of" said" pairs for the outward passage of articles disposed in a stack in the container, the end wall panel contiguous to the slothaving a central opening for manual engagement with the outermost article on thestack for removal, and means for advancing-the-articlesto the opening-including an exteriorly disposed anchor tongue-in' each of the side wall panels of the other of said pairs, said anchor tongues extending towards the panel which is provided with the central opening and having recesses at the root portions thereof, an elastic band engaging in said recessesand having portions extending exteriorly around and in engagement with said tongues and having the remaining portions interiorlyv disposed and extending in engagement with the bottom of the stack of articles, and additional exteriorly disposed band engaging anchor tongues in each of the side wall panels of the other of said pairs for retaining said band in said recesses and adjustment of the tension of the band, said additional 5 anchor tongues being spaced along said side wall panels from said first mentioned tongues and being oppositely disposed with respect thereto.
