Patented Apr. 15, 1952 res e TENT OFFICE 2,592,918 BILLFOLD INSERT Application January 19, was, Serial No. 2,979
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in billfolds and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a bill retainer attachment for billfolds and the like that will conveniently hold a group of bills in an easily accessible position.
Another important object of the present. invention is to provide a billfold insert including a plurality of extendable partitions so designed as to facilitate the same to be extended in a sequential and consecutive order for the accessibility to bills or the like inserted between ad- =jacent partitions. H
A further object of the present invention is to provide a billfold insert that is so designed as to facilitate. the same to be quickly and readily secured within the bill compartment of a billfold and the like.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a billfold insert that is small'and compact in structure, simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well addi tedfor the purposes for which the same is intended;
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part here-of, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a billiold and showing the present invention applied thereto in an extended position; a
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a similar view of Figure 2, and showing the present invention in a normal position retracted within the billfold; and,
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the present invention removed from the billfold.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral Ill represents a conventional billfold or wallet generally, having a longitudinal bill receiving compartment l2 inc1uding a forward wall It and a rear wall It.
Positioned within the compartment l2, there is provided a plurality of adjacent partitions, substantially rectangular in configuration, of preferably leather or flexible material, which include a forward panel or partition It, a rear panel or partition 20,- and an intermediate panel 3 Claims. (Cl. 1 5038) a partition zz. The forward partition 18 and intermediate partition '22 are provided with 0ppos'ed openings 24 in their central portions facili tating the same to be conveniently folded along lines 26 which align the foldable center portion of the billfold H].
Fixedly secured by stitching or the like to the lower longitudinal edges of the forward partition I8, adjacent the opening 24 therein, is a pair of flexible straps 28 and 30 having free edges 32 and 34 which are fixed by stitching or the like to the forward wall M of the ,compartment [2 in such a manner as to permit slight withdrawal of the forward partition l8 from the compartment l2. These straps 28 and 30 are also secured by stitching or the like to the lower longitudinal edges of the intermediate partition ZZ and the rear partition 20, to provide flexible hinges or extensions 36 and 38 between the intermediate partition and forward partition and the intermediate partition and rear partition.
It should be noted that the upper portion 40 of the rear partition is elongated and extends considerably above the upper longitudinal edges of the forward partition 18 and the intermediate partition 22, to provide a finger engaging strip which when pulled outwardly will cause all of the partitions to sequentially extend from the bill receiving compartment in staggered relationship as shown best in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. I
Obviously, suitable snap fasteners may be employed for removably attaching the forward partition 18 to the forward wall of the partition [2, so that the present insert may be quickly and readily applied to or removed from a billfold or the like in a convenient manner. Also, a plurality of intermediate partitions may be employed, although the drawings show only one, so that the insert will be provided with additional bill receiving chambers.
It should be noted, that the present insert may be reduced in size to facilitate the same to occupy only a portion of the bill receiving chamber or compartment of a billfold or wallet and that the same may be constructed of a rigid or non-flexible material to aid in pressing cards or the like which may be inserted between adjacent partitions.
When in use, the finger receiving strip 40 of the rear partition is conveniently pulled outwardly relative to the billfold so that the partitions I8, 20 and 22 will be extended in such a manner as to permit the edges of the bills or cards positioned between the partitions to extend slightly from the billfold so that a user may conveniently remove bills from their normal position between adjacent partitions.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary,
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. A bill retainer insert for billfolds and the like comprising a plurality of elongated flexible partitions including a forward partition, a rear partition and a partition between the forward and rear partitions and immediately adjacent the forward partition, said partitions having lower edges, flexible hinge straps loosely connecting the lower edges of said partitions to each other, an anchor strap on the forward partition for anchoring the forward partition to a billfold, and a finger gripping extension carried by said rear partion for extending said partitions in sequential and consecutive relationship, each of said partitions including a transverse fold line intermediate its ends, said forward partition having a central opening and the partition immediately adjacent said forward partition also having a central opening in registry with the opening in the forward partition.
2. In a billfold having a bill receiving compartment extending throughout its length, a hill retainer extending throughout the length of the billfold and received in the compartment comprising a plurality of juxtapositioned partitions including forward and rear partitions having lower longitudinal edges, and a flexible hinge strip having forward and rear end portions, the forward end portion of said strip being secured to the billfold and the rear end portion of said strip being secured to the lower edge of said rear partition, said strip underlying the lower edge of said forward partition and being secured to the lower edge of said forward partition, the lower edge of said forward partition being spaced from the lower edge of the rear partition whereby a pull upon the rear partition will cause the same to be extended from the bill receiving compartment prior to the extension of the forward partition from the bill receiving compartment.
3. In a billfold having a bill receiving compartment extending throughout its length, a bill retainer including a purality of substantially rectangular partitions that extend throughout the length of the bill receiving compartment and which are of a width substantially equal to the width of the billfold, said partitions including a forward partition, a rear partition and an intermediate partition interposed between said forward and rear partitions, a pair of flexible anchoring straps terminally secured to said forward and rear partitions and centrally fixed to the lower edge of said intermediate partition, means carried by said forward partition and anchored to the 'billfold to confine the retainer within the billreceiving compartment, and an extension on said rear partition for withdrawing said partitions from the bill receiving compartment in staggered relationship, each of said partitions having a transverse fold line medially its ends to permit folding of the billfold intermediate its ends wit. out restriction from the retainer.
