Description

C. L. CHANDLER FOLDABLE GARMENT SUPPORT FOR IRONING BOARDS Filed June 15, 1950 INVENTOR Clara, L. flhanvller BY W ATTORNEY Nov. 20, 195] Eel Patented Nov. 20, 1951 FOLDABLE GARMENT SUPPORT FOR IRONING BOARDS Clara L. Chandler, Cleveland, Ohio, assignor of one-half to Frank Levstek, Cleveland, Ohio Application June 15, 1950, Serial No. 168,203
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a detachable and foldable garment support for use on ironing boards and the like, and has for its object to provide a convenient support immediately adjacent the ironing board to which garments may be transferred as they are ironed.
The rack of the present invention consists of a socket member adapted to be clamped to an ironing board and a foldable garment support comprising a post that fits in the socket and a hanger supporting arm that is pivoted to the top of the post and that is supported in its operative position extending horizontally at right angles to the post and. which is foldable about the pivot to a position in which it lies alongside the post for convenient storage.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ironing board with the rack of the present invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a foreshortened side elevation of the rack alone on an enlarged scale;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the rack shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line indicated at 4-4 in Fig. 2 and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the post and bar detached from the clamp and folded together.
In the accompanying drawings the support is shown attached to an ironing board 1 of conventional construction which may be of the foldable type with hinged legs 2 and 3. The garment support of the present invention is attached to the ironing board I by means of a C-clamp 4, the lower arm I8 of which carries a screw 5 provided with a head 6 which forms the movable jaw of the clamp, The clamp 4 is preferably made by bending the flat metal strap to form the clamp and to provide an integral standard I that extends upwardly from the top arm IQ of the clamp, the standard I being provided with a socket portion 8 at its upper end which is formed by bending edges 9 of the strap inwardly to provide a substantially rectangular open top socket. Below the socket portion 8 the standard 1 has a twist l0 which disposes the upper portion 8 in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the base portion of the standard. The twist l0 serves to stiffen the standard and also to dispose the garment supporting rack at right angles to the edge of the ironing board to which the clamp is attached.
The garment rack comprises a post II in the form of a flat metal strap having a narrowed lower end portion l2 that fits in the socket portion 8 of the standard and shoulders 13 for en gagement with the top of the standard and a garment supporting bar M also in the form of a flat metal strap that is connected to the upper end of the post H by a horizontal pivot pin [5. The pin !5 holds the bar M and post it in face to face engagement, and the bar It is supported in its horizontal position by means of a lug it on one of the straps that form the post and bar, the lug being positioned to engage a longitudinal edge of the other strap to position the straps at right angles to one another. The lug i6 is preferably formed on the post it and, is positioned laterally of the pivot i5 and below the same. The top face of the lug i6 is positioned below the top of the post I l a distance corresponding to the width of the bar l4 so that when the bottom edge of the bar l4 rests on the top face of the lug IS the bar I4 is supported in a position at right angles to the post H. The bar 14 can be swung from a position in which its bottom edge engages with the top face of the lug It as shown in. Fig. 2, to a position in which its top edge engages with a side edge of the lug l6 as shown in Fig. 5.
The top edge of the bar I4 is provided with spaced notches I! to receive the hooks of the garment hangers. The supporting clamp and foldable rack can be stored in a small space when detached from the ironing board and can be quickly and easily mounted on the ironing board when desired.
By disposing the socket portion 8 of the standard at right angles to the base portion of the standard the post H is so positioned that the garment supporting bar it is supported at right angles to the edge of the ironing board to which the clamp is applied.
In applying the clamp to ironing boards of the collapsible type the garment rack is preferably attached to the wide end of the ironing board so that the rack does not interfere with ironing and so that the weight of garments hung on the bar M will not tip the ironing board.
It is to be understood that in accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, variations and modifications of the specific devices herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A detachable and foldable garment support for use on ironing boards or the like comprising a supporting and attaching member in the form of a C-clamp having an integral standard provided with an upwardly opening substantially rectangular socket, and a foldable rack comprising two flat straps disposed face to face and a pivot connecting said straps, one of said straps having a lug in the path of an edge of the other strap for positioning said straps at right angles to one another, one of said straps forming a post and having its end portion remote from the pivot formed to fit in said socket and being provided with shoulders engageable with the standard, the other of said straps forming a hanger supportingbar and being provided with longitudinally spaced hanger receiving notches.
2. A detachable and foldable garment support for use on ironing boards or the like comprising a supporting and attaching member in the form of a C-clamp having an integral standard provided with an upwardly opening substantially rectangular socket, and a foldable rack comprising two fiat straps disposed face to face and a pivot connecting said straps, one of said straps having a lug engageable with the longitudinal edge of the other strap to position the same at right angles to one another and with the other longitudinal edge of said other strap when the straps are superimposed one upon the other, one of said straps forming a post and having its end portion remote from the pivot formed to fit in said socket and being provided with shoulders engageable with the standard, the other of said straps forming a hanger supporting bar and being provided with longitudinally spaced hanger receiving notches.
3. A detachable and foldable garment support for use on ironing boards or the like comprising a supporting and attaching member in the form of a C-clamp formed of a metal strap bent to provide a bottom screw receiving arm adapted to underlie an ironing board, a top arm for engagement with the top of the board and a standard extending substantially at right angles to said top arm, said standard having edge portions bent to provide a socket of substantially rectangular cross section, the longer cross sectional dimension of the socket being parallel to the face of the standard, the base of said standard being twisted to dispose the face of the socket portion of the standard at an angle of substantially ninety degrees to the base of the standard, and a foldable rack comprising two fiat metal straps disposed face to face and having ends pivotally connected, one of said strapsserving as a post and having its end remote from the pivot formed to fit in said socket, the other of said straps having a lug engageable with an edge of the other strap to support the notched strap in horizontal position with its notched edge uppermost.
