No. 257,084. Patented Apr. 25, 1882.
kit r 63 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORLANDO M. SCOTT, OF MARYSVILLE, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR EXHIBITING OR HOLDING WHIPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,084, dated April 25, 1882.
Application filed March 6, 1882. (No model.)
1" 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that l, O. M. SCOTT, of Marysville, in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Hanging Whips; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part ot'this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows a whip having the key inserted therein and suspended by means of a slotted plate, and Fig. 2several views or modi fications of the key itself.
The object I have in view is to provide a sim ple and convenient means of hanging whips, designed especially for sales or exhibiting rooms, but which may be used also in stables for keeping the whip from warping or becoming crooked, and at the same time enabling it to Lye easily suspended or removed when wanted; and to these ends my invention consists in the combination, with a whip, of a spring-key, when constructed and adapted to operate substantially as will he herein set forth.
In order that others may avail themselves of the benefits of my invention, 1 will now proceed to describe it more fully.
A indicates a whip having the usual eye or loop, 0, by means of which the cracker is socured. 1) represents a spring-wire key, which consists simply of a suitable piece of springwire bent in either one of the shapes shown in Fig. 2, or in a form manifestly their equivalent. I however prefer crossing the shanks, so that when pressed together they may easily be inserted in the eye or loop of the whip, and when released from pressure they widen apart, and thus prevent the key from falling out when the whip is exhibited or cracked. B represents the usual slotted plate, and furnishes a convenient support for the key.
The facility with which the key may be in serted or intentionally removed from the whip when desired, together with the fact that it will not become detached or fly off when the whip is beingexhibited, are features which will readily commend it to manufacturers or daders in this article.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a device for exhibitingor holding whips, the combination ofa whip and spring-key with a suitable slotted plate or holder adapted to receive and retain the whip and key, all substantially as and for the purpose stated.
In testimony that'I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ORLANDO M. SCOTT.
