J. M. THORPE.
CUSHION PROTECTOR FOB. BOTTLES.
Patented Apr. 4,18 82.
N4 PETERS, PhnlmLithogr-lpher. Washington. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE JAMES M. THORPE, OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH A. BELLOLI, OF SAME PLACE.
CUSHION-PROTECTOR FOR BOTTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 255,900, dated April 4, 1882.
' I Application filed December 3, 1881. (No model.)
To all tehom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES M. THORPE, of San Jos, county of Santa Clara, State of California, have invented a Cushion-Protector for Bottles and Jars; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bottle showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through bottles packed. Fig. 3 illustrates a modification.
My invention relates to bottle-protectors, and especially that class wherein the bottle or vessel is surrounded by a rubber band or cord resting in a groove. Heretofore in this class of protectors like bottles have been made with the groove for containing the rubber cushion in the same relative position. By this construction, when the bottles are packed the packing-rings of contiguous bottles abut against each other, and the two bottles would be separated by the projecting portions of two packing-rings, thus occupying much more space than is necessary.
The object of my invention is to overcome this objection; and it consists in a bottle provided with aserics of grooves or holding devices near its upper end and aseries of the same near its lower end, in combination with adjustable elastic parking-rings, whereby I am enabled to readily place the packing-rings on contiguous bottles at varying elevations, so they will not abut against each other.
1n order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A is a friable bottle or other vessel provided near its upper end with a series of grooves, a (t, and near its lower end with a series of grooves, a a. A cylindrical rubber ring, I), is passed over the bottle and sprung into one of the grooves a, and a like rubber or other elastic ring, I), placed in one of the grooves a. The series of grooves or depressions enables me to readily change the elastic rings on contiguous bottles at dif ting against each other, and much economy of spacein packing is the result.
Fig. 3 shows a modification of my invention wherein a series of ribs, 0, are formed and covered by a rubber band, 6?.
I am aware that heretofore an elastic ring has been inserted in a groove around the exterior ot' a friable bottle or other vessel as a protector, and hence I make no broad claim thereto; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A friable vessel provided with two sets or series of grooves, a a, in combination with adjustableelasticringsbb, fittingin said grooves,
as and for the purpose set forth.
1n witness whereof I hereunto set my hand.
. JAMES MORETON THORPE.
