(Cl. 131237) This invention relates to novel and useful improvements in cigarette crushers and containers and is a continuation in part of my coanvil, whi'ch anvil includes a pair of legs having slots therein, the slots accommodating a pivotally displaceable and bodily displaceable crusher adapted for movement by means of a handle, and the operation thereof being opposed by means of a resilient member, preferably a Other objects and features of novelty will become apparent to those skilled in the art, in following the description of the preferred form of the invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 6 is a fragmentary back view of the device illustrative of slots used for the purpose of supporting the ash receiving and cigarette receiving receptacle.

My copending application deals with similar subject matter as disclosed herein. Certain improvements have been made since the time that my copending application was placed on file. The improvements consist primarily of the supplying of a bracket which has a web and a pair of legs, the legs accommodating the crusher rather than fastening the crusher'directly to the sides of the receptacle as in my copending application. Hence, the relatively unsightly slots in the side of the receptacle are obviated.

The web of the bracket serves the purpose of an anvil so that the lighted end of a cigarette or cigar does not come into direct contact with the front of the receptacle. By this expedient, the paint, and/or any other type of finish which is on the receptacle does not tend to become 2 unsightly, marred or burned due to the heat in the lighted end of the cigarette or cigar.

A receptacle, generally indicated at [0, is provided with side walls [2 and I4, a front wall 16 and a back wall [8. A bottom 20 is provided on the receptacle and a removable closure 22 is disposed at the open top of the receptacle.

The closure is maintained on the open top of the receptacle by means of a frictional" contact, aided by the punching 24 in a side of the closure 22 and in one of the walls of the receptacle H).

An elongated opening 26 is provided in the closure accommodating the handle 28 having a knob 30 at one end and attached to a plate 34 at: the other end. This plate has a bight 36 at the lower end wherein means is provided for pivoting the plate in the receptacle.

The pivoting means consists of a pin 38 disposed in the bight 36 and having heads at each end. Viewing Figure 5, it is seen that a bracket is provided with a web 48 and legs 42 and 44, respectively. The bracket is substantially U- shaped in configuration, the legs 42 and 44 serving as supports for the pivot pin 38. Inclined slots 46 and 48, respectively, are provided in the legs 42 and 44 and are used as keeper slots. Receiver slots 50 and 52, respectively, intersect the keeper slots 46 and 48 and are used for receiving the pivot pin 38 so that it may move inwardly to be received in the keeper slots 46 and 48.

The bracket is fixed to the front wall [6 by any suitable means such as welding, soldering or the like, and the legs 42 and 44 are spaced slightly from the walls I2 and I4, respectively (Figure 3). Accordingly, cigarettes or cigars are received in one of the receiving openings 54 or 56 in the closure 22 and are disposed between the web 40 which serves as an anvil, and the plate 34. The plate 34 is then operated pivotally about the pivot pin 38 by means of the handle 28 and is bodily displaced upon pulling the handle slightly further toward the front of the receptacle in order that cigarettes may be fully crushed at the lighted end thereof and in order to allow the cigarette to pass through the space between the plate 34 and the anvil 40 and into the bottom of the receptacle l0.

Means opposing the operation of the plate 34 is provided. The preferable means consists, of

3 Means for supporting the receptacle is provided. The preferable means consists of one or more slots 62 and 64, respectively, which are formedrin the back wall 18. Enlargements are provided at the lower ends of the slots and substanti-ally horizontal end portions are formed therein. These slots accommodate pins which have heads 65 of a size small enough to pass through the enlargements in the slots 52 and 64 but not sufficiently small to pass through the remainder of the slots.

The last-named pins preferably extend from a flat plate or bracket 68 which is adapted to be fixed to any suitable vehicle component or any other suitable member such as the portion of the dashboard 16 illustrated in Figure 2, A simpl'e screw and nut 72 may be used for this fastening purpose. Of course, other fastening media may I be resorted to if found desirable. It isapparent that variations may bemade without departing. from the spirit ofv the inven- ,tion.

5- Having described the invention, what, is claimed as new is:

l. A device for extinguishing and retaining cigars and cigarettes comprising a receptacle, a

bracket disposed in said receptacle and having a pair of legs, each leg having a keeper slot and an Q 2.- A device for extinguishing and retaining I .Lcigars and cigarettes comprising a receptacle, a bracket disposed in said receptacle and having a pair of legs, each leg having a keeper slot and an intersecting receiver slot, a crusher disposed in 4 said receptacle and having a pivot pin operatively disposed for pivotal and linear movement in said keeper slots, a handle secured to said crusher and extending outwardly of said receptacle for operating said crusher, and an anvil consisting of a part of said bracket connecting said legs for accommodating lighted cigars and cigarettes when such crusher is operated.

A device for extinguishing; and retaining cigars and cigarettes comprising a receptacle, a bracket disposed in said receptacle and having a pair of legs, each leg having a keeper slot and an intersecting receiver slot, a crusher disposed in said receptacle and having a pivot pin operatively disposed for pivotal and linear movements in said keeper slots, and means carried by said crusher for operating said crusher, a part of said bracket connecting said legs and forming an anvil for accommodating lighted cigars and cigarettes when said crusher is operated, the anvil part of said bracket being fixed to the interior ois'aidreceptacle and said legs being spaced irom the receptacle. v p
