Description

Dec; 6, 1949 G. E. FOURNIER PLAY PEN Filed May 28, 1947 INVENTOR w fiawxzze'r ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 6, 1949 U N] TED STATES PATENT OFF 1 C E PLAY PEN George Edward Fournier, West Hartford, Conn.
ApplicationMay 28, 1947.; Serial No. 750,944
8 Glaims.
This invention relates to play pens and particularly to a foldable child's play pen" or crib having open or lattice work side walls and a sectional floor, the floor sections and side Walls being foldable to a compact unit that may .be' conveniently stored or carried about and quickly opened to usable form.
An important object of the invention is to provide a light but durable pen .or crib, the sections of which are hinged together to enable the enclosure to be folded to an extremely compact unit and opened to form preferably a hexagonal enclosure having vertical side walls and a floor made up of similar triangular sections completely covering the area within the side walls and each floor section being hinged to one of the sectional side walls.
A feature of importance of the invention is that each of the triangular floor sections is hinged to the lower'portion of a, side wall section so that when in usable or open form the floor sections lie directly upon the surface on which the pen is placed.
Another feature of advantage is that one of the pairs of hinges connecting adjacent side wall sections together has loose pins enabling the pins tov be withdrawn and the sections disconnected at this joint for folding into carrying condition.
And finally it is an object of the invention to provide means to retain the angular floor sections against the inner side of their wall or fence sections to facilitate folding the members into carrying position.
With the above and other objects in View the invention may include the features of construction and operation set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
In the accompanying drawin annexed hereto and forming a part of this specification, I have shown the invention embodied in a preferred form of hexagonal play crib or pen but it will be understood that the invention can be other wise embodied and that the drawing is not to be construed as defining or limiting the scope of the invention, the claims appended to this specification being relied upon for that purpose.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the play pen in folded condition ready for storing or carrying;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the play pen forming the present invention in open or usable position, a, part only being shown; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the pen or crib in open tion.
Briefly, and irrits preferred aspect, the invention may includethe following principal parts: First, a number ofvertical side wall sections hinged together-so that they may, in open position, form a multi-angular enclosure and be folded into closely adjacent positions for carryin or storing; second, triangular floor sections individually hinged along the lower portions of the side wall sections so that when in open position these floor sections will cover the area within the side walls and lie in the same plane; and third, individual retaining means for the floor sections to hold these sections against the inner surfaces of their respective side wall sections.
Referring more in detail to the figures of the drawing, the completecrib or'play pen illustrated in the drawing comprises six similar side wall sectionsl0, eachse'ctiorr comprising a rectangular 'open frame, Extending vertically within each 'f-rame, which preferably may be of wood, are a number of spaced bars or" rods H. To the lower portion ofeach side wall- -section I0 is attached a triangular floor section- 14. Toattach these floor sections M' to their respective side wall sections I I]; hinges I B are provided enabling each floor section M to be folded against the inner surface of its side wall section [0. To retain each floor section l4 in its position against its side wall section, a metal loop I 8 may be provided, attached, as shown, to adjacent rods l2 of a side wall section and engaging the apex of the triangular fioor section.
The side wall sections II] are hinged together as shown. To facilitate folding the pen the hinges 20 are alternately on the outer and inner sides of the frames 10 as shown in Fig. 3. Also one of the pairs of hinges at the joint between two of the wall sections I'll have removable pins 22 enabling separation of the hinged sections at this joint. With the pins 22 removed the floor sections can be folded into positions against the inner surfaces of their wall sections ID and the sections In folded into compact form as shown in Fig. 1.
position and with the floor sections shown in For carrying the play pen aboutin folded condition, a handle 24 of any desired type may be attached to the upper horizontal member of one of the side wall sections Ill. Also straps 26 may be provided to retain the sections l closely adjacent each other when folded for carrying. As shown in Fig. 1, two of these straps 26 are provided. One end of each strap 26 is fixedly attached to one of the outer frames of the folded pen and the other ends detachably attached to the opposite outside section. Thus retained by said straps, the sections are held in closely adjacent parallel planes for convenient carrying or storing.
I claim as my invention:
1. A play pen comprising a plurality of side wall sections hinged together to form an enclosure, an equal number of angular floor sections each floor section being attached individually to a different side wall section, and means to separate one of said hinged connections between adjacent side wall sections, whereby said side wall and floor sections may be folded together.
2. A play pen comprising a plurality of side wall sections hinged together to form an enclosure, an equal number of angular floor sections each floor section being attached individually to a different side wall section, means to detachably retain said angular floor sections against their side wall sections, and means to separate one of said hinged connections between adjacent side wall sections, whereby said side wall and floor sections may be folded together.
3. A play pen comprising a plurality of side wall sections hinged together to form an enclosure, a plurality of angular floor sections to cover the entire closure within said side walls, said floor sections being hingedly attached individually to the lower portions of said side wall sections, and means to separate one of said hinged connections between adjacent side wall sections, whereby said side wall and floor sections may be folded together.
4. A play pen comprising a plurality of side wall sections hinged together to form an enclosure, a plurality of angular floor sections completely covering the closure within said side walls, said floor sections being hingedly attached individually to the lower portions of said side wall sections, one floor section to each wall section, said angular floor sections against their side wall sections, and means to separate one of said hinged connections between adjacent side wall sections, whereby said side wall. and floor sections may be folded together.
5. A play pen comprising a plurality of side wall sections hinged together to form a multiangular enclosure, a plurality of triangular floor sections completely covering the space within said closure, said floor sections being hingedly individually attached respectively to said side wall sections one floor section to each wall section, loops provided on each of said side wall sections to detachably retain a floor section against said side wall section, means to separate one of said hinged connections between adjacent side wall sections, whereby said side wall and floor sections may be folded to adjacent parallel positions, and means to detachably retain said sections in folded position.
6. A play pen comprising a plurality of side wall sections suitably hinged together to form an enclosure, and triangular floor sections, each of said side wall sections having pivotally attached thereto substantially at its lower edge one of said triangular floor sections, whereby said side wall sections and floor sections may be folded compactly together.
7. A play pen comprising a plurality of side wall sections suitably hinged together to form an enclosure having vertical sides, and triangular floor sections, each of said side wall sections having pivotally attached thereto substantially at its lower edge one of said triangular floor sections, whereby said side wall sections and floor sections may be folded together with each floor section against the side surface of its side wall section.
8. A play pen comprising, a plurality of hingedly connected rectangular side wall sections forming an enclosure having vertical sides, and a triangular sectional floor panel hingedly attached to each side wall section and foldable individually against their side wall sections, and said floor panels forming when unfolded a complete flooring for said enclosure, whereby said play pen may be compactly folded with its side wall sections and floor panels closely adjacent each other.
