Application July 18, 1947, Serial No. 761,769
1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in locks and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a lock including novel and improved means for retaining the same in a locked position.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a body, a pivotal yoke and means for conveniently holding the yoke in a locked position relative to said body.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a lock so designed as to eliminate the need for spring locking mechanisms that normally become inoperative during continual use.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a lock that is simple and practical in construction, efiicient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a grouped perspective view of the present lock and showing the locking member in dotted lines applied to a key tightening recess formed in the lock body;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the present lock showing the key in position for adjusting the locking member, and with parts of the device broken away and shown in section; and,
Figure 3 is a grouped side elevational view of the lockin member and the key therefor, with parts of the key broken away and shown in section.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral ll] represents a body of any suitable size, shape and material having a notch l2 at one end and an aperture I4 in its upper face.
Pivoted in the notch I2 is one terminal portion it of a yoke or U-shaped member H8. The free terminal portion 20 of member [8 normally engages aperture Hl with a peripheral shoulder 22 adjacent portion 20 bearing upon the upper face of the body to limit the amount of portion 20 engaging aperture I4.
An internally threaded bore 24 is provided in the bod communicating with aperture i4 and opposing both ends of an internally threaded aperture 26 provided in portion 20. This bore 2 24 and aperture 26 receivably engage the screw threaded portion 28 of a locking member designated generally by the numeral 30. The enlarged head portion 32 of member 30 is recessed in an opening 3 5 provided in the body adjacent bore 24. This head 32 is also screw threaded but in an opposite manner than the threads of portion 28, for a purpose which will be later more fully evident.
The numeral 35 represents an elongated shank preferably bifurcated at one end to receive a wing element or finger grip 38 fixedly secured thereto. At the opposite end of the shank there is provided an internally threaded sleeve 40 that receivably engages head 32.
In practical use of the lock, the squared end 42 of portion 28, is first inserted into a square opening 44 in the body and the sleeve 40 is tightly fitted onto head 32. The assembled sleeve 40 and member 30 are receivably engaged with bore 24 and aperture 26 by rotating the sleeve. Upon tight engagement of the portion 28 with bore 24 and aperture 26, the sleeve is then quickly and readily removed to prevent unlocking of the device, Without the use of the shank 36 and the internally threaded sleeve 40.
In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it is believed that a, clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is hereinshown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes full comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A lock comprising a body having a recess, an internally threaded bore provided in said body intersecting said recess to provide portions on both sides of the recess, an opening provided in said body communicating with said bore, a yoke pivoted at one end to said body, said recess receivin the free end of said yoke, the free end of said yoke having an internally threaded aperture registering with said bore, a locking member having a threaded shank receivably engaging the portions on both sides of the recess and said aperture, said member having a head portion positioned in said opening and adapted to be dev e tachably engaged by a. key means for adjusting Number and removing the same from said body. 528,743 BENJAMIN RICHTER. 1,349,682 1,398,380 REFERENCES CITED 5 The following references are of record in the N b file of this patent: g gl UNITED STATES PATENTS 561:573
