Aug. 9, 1949. A. P. RUSSELL ILLUMINATING ATTACHMENT FOR CANES OR THE LIKE Filed June 13, 1947 0 M 2/@||| 5/ 5 2 4 m Il 1 :1 l. F|F||||||A llw WT m A/A/ M Q [n l/enter I Alfred R Russefl Q a 3,. By 2 r v v a E Attorneys Patented Aug. 9, 1949 UNITED STATES TENT OFFICE ILLUMINATING ATTACHMENT FOR CAN ES OR THE LIKE 1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in canes, walking sticks or the like and more particularly to an illuminating attachment carried by the cane.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a self-contained electric lamp mounted in the handle of the cane.
A further object of the invention is to provide a flash-light casing constructed in the form of a handle for a cane and which may be easily and quickly attached to the staff of the cane and arranged to illuminate the ground over which a person is walking.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended,
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings formin part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view;
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the handle of the cane;
Figure 3 is a group perspective View of the removable cap for the rear end of the handle, and
Figure 4 is a diagram of the electric circuit for the flash-light.
Figure 5 is a vertical section, taken along the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a flash-light casing of suitable material and having a laterally extending recess 6 adjacent its front end and in which the reduced upper end 1 of a stall 8 for a cane is secured by means of a screw or the like 9 to thus utilize the casing 5 as a handle for the cane.
The rear end of the casing 5 is formed with a chamber 10 in which a pair of flash-light batteries H are positioned by a cap l2, the cap being provided with a transverse pin I3 having locking engagement by a partial rotation of the cap with a bayonet slot I4 carried by a rin l5 suitably secured in the rear end of the chamber 10. A coil spring I6 is positioned between the rear end of the batteries II and the cap l2 to hold the batteries in assembled relation, the spring also serving as a conductor between the cap l2 and the base of the batteries of the rearmost battery.
A circuit wire I! leads from the ring [5 to a conventional sliding switch 18 mounted in the underside of the casing 5 and a circuit wire I9 leads from the switch to one terminal of a 2 lamp 20 while another circuit wire 2| leads from the other terminal of the lamp to the front contact 22 of the battery.
The lamp '20 is secured in a reflector 23 which is recessed in the underside of the casing 5 at its front end, the lower edge of the reflector projecting below the casing and forms in its projecting edge with window openings 24 whereby rays of light from the lamp 20 will be projected horizontally as well as downwardly in front of the staff 8 of the cane.
The lamp 20 of the flash-light is energized in the usual manner by the switch l8 and the casing 5 of the flash-light forms a handle for a cane, walking stick or the like when attached to the staff 8 thereof as indicated in Figure 1 of the drawing.
The casing 5 may be removed from the stall? 8 and the flash-light may be used in its normal manner.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In combination, a. cane having a horizontal handle projecting forwardly and rearwardly from the cane, and self-contained illuminating means in the handle and including a lamp in the lower side of the handle in front of the cane, and a reflector for the lamp recessed in the lower side of the handle and projecting below the handle and having openings in its projecting edge.
ALFRED P. RUSSELL.
