Description

Aug. 2, 1949. c. K. HANSEN ,4
SAFETY DEVICE FOR FIREARMS Filed June 12, 1948 INVENTORY 1 CLARENCE K. HANSEN I ATTORNEYS Patented Aug. 2, 1949 iJNi'l'ED STATES PATENT Emmi 1 Claim.
My invention refers to guns of all types and it has for its primary object to provide a safety device to be inserted and locked in a gun barrel, whereby accidental discharge of the gun is eliminated. It is further apparent that if the safety device is inserted in a gun barrel, should the breach end of the same inadvertently contain a shell, it would be detected and expelled.
The specific object of my invention is to provide a rod of a length approximately equal to the length of the gun barrel, the muzzle end of said rod being in tapered threaded connection with a split bushing which is inserted in the gun muzzle, whereby upon relative rotation of the bushing and rod, the said bushing is expanded in the bore of the barrel to lock the equipment into position for safety purposes.
A further obiect of my invention is to provide a key-socket in the threaded end of the rod, whereby the same may be rotated while the bush ng is held against rotation.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as herei after described. and more particularly defined by the appended claim, it being understand that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention ma be made as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings is illustrated one com ete exam le of the physical embodiment of the present invention constructed accor n to t e best mode so far devised for the pract cal a p ication of the principles thereof.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 represents a side elevation of any tyne of gun, the barrel of which has fitted therein a s fety device embodying the features of my invention the sa d barrel being partly broken awav and in section to more clearly illustrate str ctural features.
F 2 is a magnified sectional elevation of the mu zle end of a gun equip ed with my safety de ce, the section being indicated by line 22 of Fig. 3.
Fi 3 is a cross section of the same, the section. being indicated b line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fi 4 is a detail side elevation of the muzzle bushing.
Referring by characters to the drawings, l indicates a gun barrel having loosely fitted therein a rod 2, the rear end of which extends into the shell seat of the gun barrel. The outer muzzle end of the rod is provided with a screw threaded sect on 2' and the end of said screw threaded section is formed with a keyed socket 3.
Sl dably fitted into the muzzle end of the gun barrel is a bushing 4, provided with lon itudinal splits 4, whereby a fiexure of the bushing is maintained and said bushing terminates with a knurled cap 4" which abuts the end of the muzzle when said bushing is in place, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The bore of the bushing is provided with a tapered thread 5 for interlocking engagement with the threaded end of the rod and, as shown, I provide a key 6, which key is inserted through the bore of the bushing and fitted into the socket 3 of the rod end.
From the foregoing description, it is apparent that the safety equipment may quickly be inserted into the gun barrel and when so inserted, the threaded inner end of the bushing engages the corresponding threaded end of the rod.
The said elements are thus loosely nested within the gun barrel and to lock the same in this nested position, the knurled cap 4 of the sleeve is manually held and the key 6 being inserted in the rod socket, said rod is rotated to cause the end thereof to travel towards the cap end of the sleeve, whereby the tapered thread therein will cause the split sleeve to expand within the muzzle of the barrel, whereby a tight frictional engagement is effected between said surfaces to thus lock the device firmly in its safety position, it being understood that the key 6 is then removed. whereby it would be impossible to extract the safet equipment from the gun barrel and the shell end of said barrel being choked by the rod will prevent insertion of a shell therein.
Thus the accidents caused throu h. what is known as the loaded gun, are avoided.
I claim:
A safe y device for guns com rising a rod anproximately equalling the length of a gun barrel and adapted for insertion therein, having a key socket in its muzzle end, a split bushing of approximately the diameter of a gun barrel, the split bushing being in tapered thread connection with the socket end of the rod, and a key adapted to be inserted through the bushing into the rod socket, whereby when said device is inserted in the barrel relative rotation between the rod and bushing is effected to expand said bushing for frictional engagement with the bore of the barrel.
