(Cl. 248-150) This invention relates to foldable, knockdown I stands which can be utilized for various purposes, such as supporting and displaying apparel, photographic equipment and lighting, display signs, book and music holder, instrument holders, and

the like. r

The object of the invention is to provide a stand which can be folded compactly and when open may be efiectively locked into position, while at the same time the stand is composed of relatively few parts, involving a minimum of cost both in the manufacture of parts and in the assembling thereof.

Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.

The invention accordingly comprises an article of manufacture possessing the features, properties, and the relation of elements which will be exemplified in the article hereinafter described,

and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.

For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in

which:

Fig. 1 is an isometric view of the stand as it appears in open and locked position with supports supplied for use as a saxaphone stand and an additional support for use as a clarinet holder;

Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;

Fig. 4. is a bottom plan view of the central frame member with the two legs, pivoted thereto, folded into collapsed position beneath the frame member;

As shown a main central member or bar I is turned down at each end to provide end supports 2 and 3. End support 3 carries a bracket 4. Side legs 5 are pivoted at their inner ends upon rivets 6 passing through the main bar I and bracket 4. with pads I which may be integral therewith.

The folding legs 5 have notches it at their inner ends which register with the opening 8 only when these legs are in their extended position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thereby locking the folding legs in extended position and tending to lock the central support in its position. When the legs are not in extended position pin 9 cannot pass down through opening 8 and the stand can be assembled accordingly only in the correct position. The central support also carries a member consisting of a central pin W, a rivet head 58 and a lower elongated locking piece is fixedly carried by the pin 11.

In assembling, the central support pin 9 is passed down through the hole 8, the rivet pin I1 is turned so that its lower locking piece it will through the elongated opening 20 in the frame member, and thereupon by turning the member i! the locking piece I9 is carried with it to a position across the frame bar i and the parts are then locked in position as shown in 5. When the stand is to be knocked down the pin fl is turned to a position such that the support I!) can be lifted from the frame I whereupon the legs 5 will be free to be folded in to the position shown in Fig. 4.

At 2| in Figs. 1, 2 and 6 is shown a clarinet rest pinned into one of the openings 22 in the side legs. This provides a support for clarinet as well as a saxophone and the clarinet support as shown in Fig. 6 can be readily lifted out of its hole and packed as shown in Fig. 6.

The turned down end supports 2 and 3 of the main bar I and the pads 'l of the side legs 5 are of such demensions that the entire support may rest evenly upon any surface upon which it is placed while in extended position and also as shown the side legs pivot to fit snugly under the main bar in knockdown position.

It will be seen that I have thus supplied a knockdown stand suitable for various purpose carrying out the stated object of the invention and others which will be obvious.

As shown the central supporting arm Hl takes off from the base part H so that the locking member I1 is between the support Iii and the pin 9. This arrangement can be readily changed so that support I 0 is connected to base I I between the pin 9 and the rotatable locking member I I or at the other end of base I I from that shown, so that the pin 9 would be between the rotating locking member and the support arm I 0.

Since certain changes may be made in the above article and difierent embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

vIt is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a knockdown stand, a frame member, legs pivoted at one end thereof, foldable beneath said frame member at one position and acting as supporting legs for the stand in their extended position, a supporting arm carried above said frame member, a pin carried by said supporting arm passing through an opening in said frame member and locking said side legs in extended position, a locking member rotatably carried by said supporting arm, having an elongated locking part passing through an elongated orifice in said frame and rotatable after passing through said orifice to lock said supporting arm to said frame.

2. In a knockdown stand, a frame member, legs pivoted at one end thereof, foldable beneath said frame member at one position and acting as supporting legs for the stand in their extended position, a supporting arm carried above said frame member, a pin carried by said supporting arm passing through an opening in said frame member and locking said side legs in extended position, the legs having notches in their inner ends cooperating with said pin to lock the legs in extended position.
