J., aV copart- Applicaton April 1, 194.6, serial No. 658,672
, 3 Claims. (Cl. 232-1) It is among the objects of the present invention to provide a smokers stand of stable construction and inherently attractive'appearance, made of few parts which are rugged in construction, which requires no handle, valve or other delicate instrumentality to dump the waste into the interior, which yet will avoid objectionable odor and in which the waste is caught rin an crdinary pickle jar, completely concealed from view, without infact, giving evidence from the exterior that such jar is being used at all, the jar being yet rendered accessible for cleaning with the utmost facility, lin fact by a mere lifting operation and without the need for unscrewing or otherwise disassembling the stand.
In the accompanying drawings in which is shown one of various possible embodiments of the several features of the invention,
Fig. lis a dropped perspective view of the stand with the ash tray and the suspended jar lifted 4out of place therefrom,
. Fig. 2 is a View in longitudinalcross section on a larger scale showing the ash tray and its suspended jar, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section view, line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings, the smokers stand may comprise a base Ill, desirably a casting with an upstanding short ferrule II rigid therewith, in which is permanently aixed, as by soldering the lowerend of a tubular standard I2, desirably cylindrical in form, as shown. About the upper end of the standard is mounted a platform, desirably a disk I3 in the order of a, foot or more in diameter. The platform preferably has a downturned short hub flange I4 encompassing the upper end of the standard' and preferably rigidly attached thereto as by friction fit and solder or welding. The platform is desirably a casting with an upstanding outer lip I5 for ornamental appearance. Preferably a heavy metal taper plug I6 is securely and permanently aflixed within the lower end of the standard and similar weighting metal may be affixed within the hollow o-f the base I0 to give the structure a low center of gravity so that it is not easily upset.
Removably supported upon the platform is the ash tray I1, which has a frusto-conical face I8 leading downward and inward to a central aperture I9. The ash tray has means for centering the same upon the platform and for releasably suspending a conventional pickle jar 29 directly therefrom to catch the stubs, ashes, matches and other waste dropped upon the ash tray. In
taken on a preferred specific construction shown, the ash tray has a flat annulus 2| which encompasses the frusta-conical face and has radiating cigarette or cigar holding grooves 22. The ash tray also has -a downturned outer supporting rim 23.
Unitary with the frusto-conical face and extending downward from the underside thereof is a cylindrical wall or hub, preferably cut into uniformly spaced narrow arcuate 'segments 24 desirably three in number, as shown, which help to center the ash tray lon the tubular standard. The segments have an internal thread conformation 25, releasably to serve as .jar holding lugs for mounting the neck of the conventional pickle jar 20 of diameter to t into the tubular standard I2, with the rim of the 'jar below the underside of Vthe frusto-conical face. Preferably, a short cylindrical tube 23 extends downward from about and concentrically with the central aperture I9 within and spaced from the neck of the pickle jar, as shown. A
In a preferred construction, the ash tray is about six inches in diameter and is made of a unitary casting, the tube 26 and the arcuate jar holding segments 24 being integral parts of the tray.
The unitary ash tray structure I1 with the pickle jar 20 threaded in place thereon is mounted in position by inserting the jar into the upper end of the tubular standard I2, the threaded jar holding lugs 24 substantially engaging the inner wall of the tubular 4standard I2 and therefore accurately centering the ash tray t0 rest upon its downturned rim 23 on the platform I3 with the jar suspended from the holding segments 24 of the ash tray.
In practice the platform I3 would be made of one nish, say aluminum or chromium, and the ash tray I1 lof a contrasting color or finish, say of copper or brass, which lends a particularly attractive appearance to the unit and does not give evidence of the ready removability of the ash tray. The rim of the ash tray snugly engaging the platform has the appearance vof being an integral part thereof.
In use, the platform affords convenient support for bottles, glasses and the like. Cigars or cigarettes may be readily rested in the radial grooves 22 on the outer annulus 2I of the ash tray. Ashes, butts or matches dropped upon the ash tray will drop by gravity along the frustoconical face I8 thereof through aperture I9 and into the jar 20 suspended therebelow. Smoke from smouldering butts or matches tends to rise along the well of the jar Iand therefore will be 3 curled back from the neck of the jar by the outer Wall of tube 26 to return to the jar, so that little if any smoke Will rise through the aperture I9.
To clean the jar, the ash tray l1 is simply lifted from the platform I3, with the jar 2U suspended therefrom, the latter is unscrewed and after cleaning, screwed back into position on the ash tray, which is then simply rested upon the platform. The cleaning operation is thus very expeditious and requires no disassembly of the stand. The device is thus substantially proof against stripping of threads, jamming or other injury incurred in the attempted cleaning of more complicated stands that have to be disassembled and reassembled by unskilled help.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope of the claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A smokers stand comprising a base, a tubular standard rising therefrom, a platform rigidly affixed about the upper end of said standard, a centrally perforated ash tray removably resting ing upon said platform, said ash tray having a frusto-conical face for gravity discharge of waste through the central aperture thereof, means rigid and concentric with the ash tray substantially engaging the inner wall of the tubular standard at the upper part thereof for centering said ash tray and preventing lateral movement thereof, said means being formed as a jar holder for removably maintaining an ash intercepting jar suspended from said ash tray.
2. A smokers stand comprising a base, a tubular standard rising therefrom, a platform rigidly afXed about the upper end of said standard, a centrally perforated ash tray removably resting upon said platform, said ash tray having a frustoconical face rising from said aperture, and a flat annular rim encompassing said face, said ash tray having a hub interrupted into a plurality of spaced arcuate cylindrical segments integral with and extending downward from the underside of the frusto-conical face for centering said ash tray, each segmentV being threaded internally for removable accommodation of the neck of a jar to be suspended therefrom within the standard when the ash tray is in position upon the platform.
3. A smokers stand comprising a base, a tubular standard rising therefrom, a platform rigidly aixed about the upper end of said standard, an ash tray comprising a unitary casting removably resting upon the platform, said ash tray comprisingva short axial tube, a frusto-conical face rising from the .periphery of said tube, a fiat annular rim encompassing said face, and a hub comprising threaded arcuate segments of a cylinder concentrically about and spaced from said tube and extending downward from the underside of the frusto-conical face for centering said ash tray, and a removable jar depending from and removably screwed at its neck into said hub and depending into said standard.
