invention relates to :an improved holder It "is a purpose and object of the invention :to I
provide a tooth brush holder of .such stmcture and design as to be conveniently attachable to a wall, a cover being provided which, when in closed position, encloses the holder and any-tooth brushes mounted thereon.
It is also 18,11 objector the --invention to provide a, holder having "a. support member and cover so related that, with'the cover in closed position, apertures are provided, top and bottom, oy which to give free circulation of air to 'enable rapid drying of the brushes.
Another-object of the invention 'lies the provision of an individual sanitary compartment tor each [brush that maybe positioned the holder.
An additional obiiect of the invention appears in the provision of :a cover which, when moved into closed position, not only fully encloses the tooth brushes, but also serves to prevent inadvertent displacement thereof.
Another and most important object of thein- Y vention lies in the provision or -a holder having a cover so mounted on the body of the holder as to he movable, under spring pressure, into a closed position against the compartment divisions, and stop means to determine the extent to which the cover may bemovd, alsohndersprlng action, into an opened position.
Other advantages and objects of the invention will be more fully understood from a consideration of the following specification, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. l is a front elevational view of one embodiment of the invention, parts being lbroken away to disclose certain of the structural details, as well as the position of a tooth brush when mounted in the holder;
Fig. -2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of-Fig. 1';
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially mi the line '3-3 of Fig. *1;
Fig. *4 is a further vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. '1;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken substantially as .2 7 indicated for Fig. 4 and shows the cover in :fully opened position; i
,Fig. .6 is a fragmentary exploded perspective view illustrating the assembly of the parts of the holder;
Fig. '7 is sin-enlarged tragmentary view of "the pivot ldettails shown in Fig. .3; .and
fig. 8 is an enlarged ffragmentary view of the pivot structure as shown in Fig. .5.
Refierring more particularly 5130 the drawing, the reference numeral -:H! is employ-edto generally designate :a. holder embodying E0118 form of the invention. The holder comprises aifbody member 4;! land cover :12. The member M includes aback 1.3, from one aface of which partitions 14 extend. Flihese partitions may be uniformly paced, .as shown, :and extend from the bottom edge of the back inpwnmdlv to adjacent the top edge, "term-ihating just short of ra ahead t6 iormed along the upper edge of the back. The forward upperedges or :the partitions :14 are preferably rounded, 'as at Ill, for :a purpose hereinafter set forth. At the bottomof certain of the intermediate partitions is a brush support J8, so :shaped as topmvid c apeming :19 land a passageway .2! between one side thereof :and the next adjacent EM. :the present disclosure the holder is shown adapted to accommodate five rbm-shes, such as indicated "by ftheabrush 22:0 :in Hg. '1, and the three intermediate compartments are defined by the partitions 1:4, back 18, and thelcover tl2 when in closed position. The end compartments :are formed :by -.only ionepartition, la apart of the hack 1:3, :and :a portion of side :and front of the cover when in closed position. Furthermore, brush supports 22 for these end ncmpartments are of somewhat difierent shape, being designed to-oonzflorm (to the :cover contour. However, each of the :snnports .22 includes #8 portion acooperates with an adti aoent partition M :to provide a passageway I25 for a apart :of the handle of .the 220.. "The head Hi, the present disclosure of the invention, is interrupted midway of its length by a recess lor .slot123. The base wall 24 of the recess is fonmed in a predetermined curve and terminates in a cut-back shoulder "25 that constitutes a seat 3501' one end :of a (i-shaped spring 211.
Th mover in acomprises .a top front wall 2 and end "walls 31. In the present instance the front wall 29 is slightly curved and, through suitable rounded portions, blends with the end walls 3| and the top 28. It will be noted that the partitions l4, as well as the brush supports [8 and 22, are proportioned to conform to the contour of the cover.
Depending from the top wall 28 of the cover are short partitions 32. These partitions are so disposed and contoured as to abut and complement the partitions l4, when the cover is in closed position, to complete the compartments. At the rear of each partition 32 is an arcuate recess that is complementary to the bead l6, and it is these recesses, together with a rear cover portion 33, that constitute the bearing points for the cover l2. In this connection it will be noted that with the provision of a muliplicity of bearing points located uniformly along the upper edge of the back [3, there can be little or no twisting of the cover during pivoting into one positionor another. Centrally of the portion 33 is a. recess 34,
4 the holder in a sidewise manner and, when the cover I2 is moved into closed position, the front wall 29 of the cover serves to complete the brush compartment and secures all brushes against inadvertent displacement.
Although applicant has shown and described only one modification of his invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that variations thereof may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the annexed claims.
Having thus set forth my invention what I claim a new and for which I desire protection by Letters Patent is: t
- 1; A holder for articles comprising a body portion, partitions on one face of said body portion defining vertically extending compartments, article supports adjacent the base of said body portion cooperating with said partitions to prothe base wall 36 of which is formed in a prede'- termin d curve and terminates in a shoulder 31. Walls 24 and 36 are complementary, when the cover I2 is in opened position, to form a seat for the body of the spring 21 and, of course, the shoulder 31 serves to seat the other end of this spring. With the cover in opened position, as shown in Fig. 5, it is evident that the spring can neither be readily dislodged nor can the cover be forced to a further opened position.
To conveniently mount the holder, a block 38 is attached to or formed integral with the base l3 and extends rearwardly therefrom. This block is formed with a downwardly opening groove 39, the sides of which are undercut to receive and hold a plate 4| that may be attached directly to a wall by mean of a screw 42. The upper end of the block may terminate at a point such that when the cover assumes a fully opened position, an edge of portion 33 will abut the block and thus additionally safeguard against breakage or damage due to careless manipulation of the cover from closed to opened position.
Inasmuch as the top 28 of the cover has contact with the base only along the partitions 32, a narrow aperture 43 is created between the cover and. the base, and this aperture cooperates with the aperture in either brush support l8 or 22 to provide free circulation of air lengthwise of each compartment. It may be observed that no top aperture 43 appears in the center compartment. This compartment may be disregarded as a brush holder, if desired, or the partitions thereof may be close together or solid and, if solid, cut away to an extent to provide space for a spring seat. Due to the predetermined location of the complementary pivots of the bead l6 and partitions 32, together with the location of spring seats 26 and 31, the C-shaped spring 21 serves to yieldingly hold the, cover in closed position and has a dead center approximately midway between closed and opened position of the cover. Thus, when the cover is moved into opened position past dead center of the spring, it will be yieldingly held in the position shown in Fig. 5.
It will be particularly noted that each compartment is adapted to receive and support a tooth brush in such a manner that the bristles thereof are in line with the top and bottom apertures of the holder by reason of which it is believed more rapid drying of the brush may take place. Furthermore, the brush 20 is placed in vide passages for entry of said articles into said compartments, a cover for said holder, said cover including a top for closing the upper ends of said compartments, a front portion for closing the fronts of said compartments and said passages,
and end portions cooperating with certain of the partitions to form additional compartments when said cover is closed, complementary pivotal means formed integral with said body portion and cover, spring means securing said means in operable pivotal relationship, said spring means also effecting holding of said cover in closed position whereby to secure articles in said holder against inadvertent displacement.
2. In a holder for articles,-a body portion and cover, partitions on one face of said body portion defining vertically extending compartments, further partitions on said cover, complementary pivotal means on said body portion and cover, spring means securin said means in operable pivotal relationship and eifecting holding of said cover in opened or closed position, the partitions of said body portion and cover cooperating to provide compartment extending the full height of said holder when said cover i in closed position and ends on said cover cooperating with certain of the partition of said body portion and cover to form additional compartments when said cover is closed.
3. In a holder for articles, a body portion and cover, partitions on one face of said body portion, article supports adjacent the base of said body portion cooperating with said partitions to provide passages for entry of said articlesinto compartments formed by adjacent partitions, said cover including a top. partitions on said top, complementary pivotal means on said body portion and the top partitions, spring means securing said complementary means in operable pivotal relationship, a front portion of said cover being adapted to close the fronts of said compartments and said passages, and ends on said cover cooperating with certain of the partitions of said body portion and said top to form additional compartments when said cover is in closed position.
4. In a holder for articles, a body portion and cover, partitions on one face of said body portion, article supports adjacent the base of said body portion cooperating with said partitions to provide passages for entry ofarticles into compartments formed by adjacent partitions, complementary pivotal means on said body portion and said cover, spring means securing said complementary means in operable pivotal relationship, said cover including walls adapted to en- 5 6 close the top, front, ends, and partitions Of said CITED body portion, the end walls of said cover 00- operating with certain f t partitions and The following references are of record in the article supports to provide additional compartfile Of this p t merits when said cover is closed, partitions in 5 UNITED STATES PATENTS said cover complementary to the partitions of said body portion, all of said partitions cooper- Number Name Date 1923 ating to provide compartment walls extending 1,461,304 Mayo July the full height of said holder within the vertical 1,833,305 Rathbun 24, 1931 confines of Sai C v 10 ,44 ,3 8 Con ey Feb. 6, 1923 1,954,085 McMillan ..4 Apr. 10, 1934 OSCAR LEONARD s s ,9 2, 6 Am r Feb. 26, 1935 2,046,606 Borba July 7, 1936
