Description

Patented Mar. 4, 1947 UNITEDl STATES PATENT oEEicE 2,416,712 FIREARM CHAMBER LOADING INDICATOR William H. Parker, Millville, N. J.
Application November 3, 1944, Serial No. 561,739
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements iii'rearms and more particularly to safety means therefor whereby the user of the firearm can easily 'determine whether or not the same is loaded.
More specically, the invention embodies the provision of a window opening in the barrel of the firearm adjacent the breech or inner end thereof and through which the user of the iirearm may see whether a cartridge or shell is in firing position in the barrel.
A further object is to provide safety means for firearms of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts through out, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of a single barrel shot-gun constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure l2 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view through the rear portion of the barrel, and
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional ,view taken substantially on a line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the barrel of a shot-gun or similar rearm adapted for receiving a cartridge 6.
An opening 1 is formed in the top of the barrel, the opening in the present instance being of rectangular shape with the edges of the opening tapering inwardly as shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings. However, said opening may be of any other desirable form.
Snugly tted in the opening is a transparent plug 8 of glass or other transparent plastic materlal, the inner surface of the plug being curved as shown at 9 flush with the bore of the barrel to prevent interference with the insertion of the cartridge 6 therein.
the fact that the gun is loaded will then beimmediately apparent to users thereof.
While I have illustrated the invention as used upon a single barrel shot-gun it will be apparent that the same is adapted for use upon double barrel shot-gun or other types of rearms in which cartridges or shells are used.
It is believed that the details of construction, manner of use and advantages of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
A barrel for firearms of a type including a cartridge chamber adapted for firing a cartridge, said cartridge chamber having an opening in its wall in the region of the cartridge, a transparent plug fitted in said opening, the walls of said opening and the edges of said plug having grooves formed therein and a snap ring seatedin said grooves.
