SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,913, dated May 3, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEwIs R. LUP'ION, of Comanche, in the county of Comanche and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registering-Stamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, showing in detail the dial and the means for operating the hands or indicators, and Fig. 3 is a view of the indicator detached from the stamp.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.

This invention relates to registering-stamps for post-oflice use and similar purposes; and it consists in the combination, with an ordinary hand canceling device, of an indicator constructed and operating substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a handle,provided with a cross-bar, B, carrying the dating-stamp O and cancelingstamp D.

E is a rod or bar, secured to the cross-bar B by brackets F, and provided at one end with brackets G, having bearin gs for a verticallysliding rod, H, forced in a downward direction by a suitably-arranged spring, I, and provided at its lower end with a cushion, J, of rubber or other suitable material. The rod H is provided with a laterally projecting flat spring, K, connected to the end of a lever, L. pivoted to an upright, M, extending upward from the bar E, as shown.

To the free end of lever L is pivoted a dog or pawl, N, extending through a suitable opening into a cylindrical case, 0, secured to the outer end of the bar E, and engaging a ratchet-Wheel, P, from which motion is communicated, through a suitable system of wheels and pinions, to a pair of hands, Q It, moving in front of a dial, S. The latter is provided with two annular sets of figures, the outer set containing sixty spaces and theinner set containing, say, ten spaces, the hands being so arranged that while the long hand makes one revolution the short hand shall move but a single space upon the dial.

T0 the front side of the lever L is pivoted a V-shaped lever, T, the arms of which are of unequal length. The object of this is to regulate the throw of the lever L, as follows When the long arm of the said lever T is turned down toward the bar E, the lever L can be moved only a suflioient distance to move the long dial-hand forward a single space and the short hand a proportionate distance. When the position of the lever T is reversed, the lever L may be moved a sufficient distance to throw the long dial-hand forward three spaces and the short hand a proportionate distance.

For convenience in adjusting the lever T, a handle, T, may be attached to the said lever, as shown, and pins a a are also provided on the. front face of lever L to keep the lever T in position.

The spring K, which connects the sliding rod H with the lever L, will prevent injury to the device caused by the shock in bringing the stamp down.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.

By properly adjusting the lever T the device will indicate the cancellation of either one-cent or three-cent stamps, and it is obvious that by making similar and proper provision for the adjustment of the throw of lever L the cancellation of stamps of any denomination may be indicated upon the dial.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1.
