Description
March 12, 1946. A, MELNICZAK ELECTRIC IGNITER} Filed Jan. 5, 1945 IN VEN TOR. fl/ezMe/m'aza% AITCI R N EYE Patented Mar. 12, 1946 ELECTRIC IGNITER Alex Melniczak, Camden, N. J. Application January 5, 1945, Serial No. 571,497
1 plaim.
My present invention, in its broad aspect, has reference to improvements in electric lighting devices for cigarettes, cigars and other objects which it is desired to light'or ignite, and more particularly, it is my purpose to provide a safety guard for said lighting device to prevent breaking or abuse or derangement of the same and increase its life, and to prevent accidental contact of the same with the fingers, clothing, or other objects which may accidentally come into contact with it. i
In attaining the objects and advantages of my invention, I provide a handle to which is attached a porcelain or other heat resistant mount for an electric resistance coil. The handle and mount are bored to receive the electric conduit, and a switch is provided on the handle. Mounted on the handle and of a size and shape to fully enclose the electric resistance coil is a bent wire open guard frame of unique and improved construction, form and arrangement, whereby the resistance coil is fully guarded against accidental contact.
My device is simple, sturdy and practical in construction and operation and can be manufactured and sold at relatively small cost.
Other and equally important objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description and drawing, and it is to be understood that changes in form, size, shape, materials, and construction and arrangement of parts are permissible within my broad inventive concept and the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing wherein I have illustrated a preferred form of my invention:
Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is a top end view, and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 33 of Fi ure 1.
In the drawing wherein like characters of reference are used to designate like or similar parts throughout the several views:
The numeral designates my elongated handle which may be formed of wood or plastic or the like and which has a symmetrically curved grip part 2 and a flared end 3 formed with a V-shaped annular groove 4. The end face 5 of the handle is circular and fiat and the handle is longitudinally bored at 6 to receive electrical conduits l with a plug element Ia and a switch 8 is mounted on the side of the handle. The bore 6 is enlarged at 9 to receive the reduced shank ill of an elongated porcelain (or other material) mount II. The body I 2 of the mount is formed with a spiral recess or groove I20. in which is mounteda coiled electric resistance coil l3 having contact screws I 4 on lateral ears I5 on. the mount near its base. The ends of the conduits 1 are connected with the contact screws IA. The mount I I is bored as at I5 to receive the lead wires it from the resistance coil to the contact screws I4.
A bent wire cage-like guard frame H has a circularly bent base I 8 which fits into the V-shaped groove 4 in the handle, the ends being looped together as at l9. Rising from the base 18 in spaced relationship are five (or more or less) longitudinal guard wires 20 which extend beyond the length of the resistance coil and are spaced therefrom. The guard wires 20 are curved outwardly and inwardly to form a Wide part 2| and then extend straight and parallel with the mount as at 22. The ends are then bent together over and spaced from the end of the mount as at 23 and an eye 24 is provided for hanging the device from a nail or the like (not shown). The wide part or part of greatest diameter 21 forms a single joint contact for the guard on a smooth surface and no objects can contact the resistance coil inadvertently.
From the foregoing, it is believed that the objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent, but it is again emphasized that interpretation of its scope should only be conclusive when made in the light of the subjoined claim.
I claim:
An electric igniting device, comprising a handle, a V-shaped annular groove adjacent the end of said handle, a longitudinal bore in said handle, a mount, a reduced shank on said mount mounted in said bore, a spiral groove formed in said mount above said shank, laterally disposed ears formed at the lower end of said mount intermediate said shank and said grooved portion, contact means on said ears for said coil. a resistance coil on the mount positioned in said groove, electric connection through the handle and mount to the resistance coil, a switch, and a guard attached to the V-shaped annular groove in said handle and extending fully about and spaced from the resistance coil, said guard having a base, and spaced longitudinal guard members.
