Description

May 18, 1943 w. MCLAUGHLIN 2,319,621
COVER FOR GLASS FIXTURE HOLDERS Filed Nov. 5, 1941*.
Patented May 18, 1943 STATES PTENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a cover for glass fixture holders.
An object of the invention is to provide a cover that may be formed of glass which is designed to fit about a glass fixture holder to form a finish surface between the holder and a ceiling or wall.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cover for glass fixture holders which is of relatively simple and durable construction and which may be easily and neatly applied t holders now in use to effect the desired finish, and which will be held in place by the body of the holder itself.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be made manifest in the following detailed description and specifically pointed out in the appended claim, reference is had to the accompanying drawing for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Figure 1 is a sectional view through a glass fixture holder illustrating the glass fixture as having been mounted thereon and illustrating the cover embodying the present invention as having been applied thereto; and
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the glass fixture holder and the applied cover.
Referring to the accompanying drawing wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, I9 indicates a glass fixture holder that is conventionally formed of metal having a circular body II and a downwardly turned peripheral flange I2. In the center of the body there is a socket I3 which may be of conventional construction for mounting an electric lamp I4.
The glass fixture I5 that surrounds the lamp may be of any preferred or conventional form. It usually, however, has at its top an outwardly extending bead I6 beneath which mounting screws II are engageable. The mounting screws I1 extend radially inward through the flange I2. The fixture holder is secured to a ceiling or to a wall as by screws I8 that extend through keyhole slots I9 in the body Il.
The cover that comprises the present invention is preferably formed of glass. It has a marginal base portion 20 that is engageable with the surface of the ceiling or wall S. Integral therewith is a substantially cylindrical portion 2l which telescopes over the flange I2 of the xture holder. In the cylindrical portion 2l there are upwardly extending slots 22 designed to accommodate the outwardly extending portions of the mounting screws I'I. Aside from these slots 22 the cylindrical portion extends downwardly so as to be substantially flush with the bottom of the flange I2.
On the interior of the cover there is formed an inwardly extending bead or flange 23 forming a" downwardly facing shoulder that bears upon the back of the body II.
By means of the present invention it will be appreciated that the cover 20 is held in firm engagement with the surfaces S of a ceiling or wall by the fixture holder itself. It presents a smooth and attractive outer appearance and if desired the material from which it is formed may be colored. If made in colors the cover will never fade or lose its luster. Being formed of relatively hard material, such as glass, it will of course be very easily cleaned. Manifestly, the shape of the cover illustrated may be varied considerably, and if desired, the cover may be given any desired ornamental shape. In all instances, however, the flange or bead 23 on the cover being in engagement with the body of the fixture holder causes the cover to be held against the surface S by the xture holder itself so that no additional parts or fastening means are required for this purpose.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
In combination with a glass fixture holder having a mounting means by which it may be tightened toward a surface on which it is to be mounted, and adjustable screws adapted to be tightened toward the rimof a glass fixture to enable the fixture to be mounted thereon, a glass cover for the fixture holder having a rim engageable with said surface and an internal shoulder adapted to be positioned against the back of the fixture holder whereby on tightening the fixture holder toward the surface the cover will have its rim tightened into engagement with said surface and be held thereagainst by the fixture holder, said cover having a flange portion below the shoulder telescopically arranged over the fixture holder, said flanged portion being notched to accommodate the adjustable screws.
