UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB BONING, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
EAR-PIERCER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,581, dated July 6, 1880.
Application filed May 6,1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB BoNINe, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsyl- 5 Vania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ear- Piercers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanyingdrawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly sectional,
1 0 of the ear-piercer embodying my invention.
20 jaw having a pad, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A A represent two jaws properly pivoted together, and each provided with a handle, after the manner of a 2 5 pair of forceps.
On the inner end of the jaw A is a pocket, a, which receives a piece, B, of cork or other flexible or soft material, and from the inner end of the jaw A projects a prong, C, which 0 is adapted to enter the jaw A when the jaws are closed.
D represents a tubular piece or sleeve, pointed at one end and adapted to be fitted over the prong O of the jaw A and move 3 5 therewith when the jaws open and close.
The operation is as follows: The sleeve D is properly located on the prong O, and the jaws applied to an ear in such a manner that the lobe thereof is between the point of the sleeve and face of the pad .13. The jaws are now closed by action on the handles thereof, and the sleeve D pierces through the lobe, thus forming the perforation for the ear-ring. The jaws are then opened, and it will be seen that the prongO emerges from the sleeve D, which latter remains on the ear in the perforation it produced. The point of the bow of the earring is then inserted in the open end of the sleeve and the sleeve forced through the perforation of the ear, thus guiding the bow and preventing its point touching the raw edge of the perforation. The operations are repeated for the other car.
If desired, the sleeves may remain in the perforations nntilthe latter are healed, after which the ear-rings may be inserted.
It will also be noticed that the pad B provides a firm and soft cushion for the lobe of the ear, and guides the sleeve as it enters the opening in said pad.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The two jaws A A, pivoted and handled, in combination with the detachable piercingsleeve D, the jaw A having a pad, B, and the jaw A having a prong, O, which is part of or rigid with it, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
