Description
Get. 21, 1941. R. D. MOORE SANITARY GUARD FOR BEVERAGE BOTTLES v Filed April 27, 1959 INVENTOR 1?. Mayra 44% @W jl/ ATTORNEY Patented Got. 21, 1941' SANITARY GUARD BOTTL S PAT ENT OFFICE FOR BEVERAGE Richard n. Moore, Birmingham, Ala.
Application April 27, 1939, Serial No. 270,272
1 Claim.
be deposited on the bottle neck. Whil the bev-' erage manufacturers exercise? the utmost care in the cleaning and filling of bottles, the retailers such as filling stations, stores, etc. invariably place the bottles in coolers filled with stagnant water and ice, thereby placing a very unsanitary film on the outside of the bottles.
My invention further contemplates the proa vision of a sanitary guard in which the upper portion is formed with an inwardly folded flap having a shoulder for engagement under the bottle lip to hold the guard against displacement.
By providing an inward flap on the guard, the marginal edge of the central opening is rounded to prevent the accidental cutting of the consumers lips or tongue. The inward flap also serves to stiflen the lip portion of the guard to prevent tearing when the guard is applied to the bottle.
My invention embodies other novel features, details of construction and arrangement of parts which are hereinafter set forth in the specification and claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a sid elevational view showing my improved guard;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of same; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing my guard applied to a bottle.
Referring now to the drawing for a better understanding of my invention, I show a 88.111- tary guard for bottles comprising a body portion against the inner wall of the body portion. The upper end 01' the inturned flange defines antiperture {having a rounded. marginal edge 8. Ihe lower end of the flange portion I is formed to provide a shoulder portion i. A head I0 is 6 having an inturned flange portion 1 disposed the neck of a bottle H which is of standard construction and embodying a lip portion I! indented at i3 to receive a standard metal cap (not shown). After the removal of the'usual metal cap, the guardds pressed downwardly into position over the bottle neck and is held against accidental displacement therefrom by the engagement of the shoulder portion 5 under the lip portion I2.
As the guard is preferably formed of waxed paper of relatively light weight, it is necessary that the marginal edge of the aperture 8 be rounded in order that the possibility of a consumer cutting his lips or tongue will be overcome.
'The inturned flange 1 provides a rounded marginaledge 9 and is held in tight engagement with the lip of the bottle by the body portion 6. By using waxed paper formed by a not press operation, the inward flange 1 will become attached to the inner wall of the body portion to form a. two-ply construction which will readily hold its shape conforming to the bottle lip.
While I have shown my invention in but one form it is obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited but is susceptible of various changes and modifications without departing from the spirit thereof; and I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereupon as are imposed by the prior art.
I claim: 7
The combination with a beverage bottle having a beaded neck, oi a sanitary guard comprising a body portion flared inwardly at its upp r end to cover the lip of the bottle, a flange portion turned downwardly and inwardly and against the inner side 01' the body portion to form a twoply construction having a rounded marginal edge defining an opening at the top of the guard, a shoulder formed on the flange portion for engagement with a bead formed on the neck of the bottle to hold the guard in position thereon,
and saidguard being disposed in spaced relation to the neck of the bottleadiacent the lower edge or the guard to form a trough therewith when formed on the lower edge of the body portion 8. 5 the bottle is inverted.
In Fig. 3 I show the sanitary guard applied to RICHARD D. MOORE.
