Description

Patented July 4,1939 I 2,164,654
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SPRING SASHv BALANCE Albert 11. Ker-sting, Los Angeles, Calif.; Nelle Frances Ker-sting exeeutrix of said Albert H. Kersting, deceased Application November 8, 1937, Serial No. 173,421
1 Claim. (01. 16-198) My invention relates to a spring sash balance In order to hold the two parts of the housing of the general type disclosed in United States Letin assembled relation, a short lip or flange I5 ters Patent Number 1,733,666 issued to me projects at right angles from the central portion tober 29, 1929. of the vertical front edge of said plate I3, and
The principal objects of my present invention when the parts of the housing are properly asare, to generally improve upon and simplify the sembled, this lip occupies a position in a slot or construction of the sash balance disclosed in my pocket It that'is formed in the face plate l0by aforesaid patent, as well as other similar forms slotting the latter and pressing the material to of sash balances, and to construct the housing one side of said slot rearwardly as designated by and other parts of the balance so that the same I'l,Fig. 3. 10
may be easily and economically produced and Rigidly fixed in any suitable manner, either capable of being readily assembled and installed by riveting or spot welding, to the center of the for use. I side wall I2, is one end of a short tubular mem- With the foregoing and other objects in view, her [8, and the other end of this member is promy invention consists in certain novel features vided with a short arcuate lip ii! that projects of construction and arrangements of parts that through a corresponding slot that is formed will be hereinafter more, fully described and in the side wall l3. claimed and illustrated in the accompanying This tubular member I8 is provided with a drawing in which: longitudinally disposed slot 2|. In order to remember 28, and that portion of the spring within ceive the housing of the balance, jamb J is pmsaid tubular member is bent to form a semi-cirvided with a vertically disposed slot or opening I I. cular hook 30 that is Positioned Within a tubu- Formed integral with one side of the face plate membere 1100K n he inner e d of I0 and extending at right angles therefrom spring 29 is formed so that its free end engages 40 through the opening II is a plate [2 of sheet metthe inner face of tube 18 on the opposite side of al, that constitutes, one of the side walls of the the slot 2| from that portion of e p i that housing. enters said slot and thus the inner end of the The opposite side wall [3 of the housing com- Sp iS y ly anchored to the tube I8 prises a plate of sheet metal that has the same wi o th n i y f r empl n ri cr w 45 shape as plate l2, and formed integral with the 0 other fastening ea supper, lower and rear dge of this plate l3 nd The relative positions of the convolutions of the projecting at right angles therefrom, i a flange tape 23 and spring 29 are such that when the i4 that constitutes the top, bottom and inner Window a h to W c the tape is Connected is so walls of the housing. moved downward, the tape will unwind from the When the parts of the housing are properly asdrum 22 thereby imparting rotary /e e t t0 sembled, the edge of flange It bears against plate said drum, and the spring 29 will be wound onto i2 adjacent its edge, and the vertical front edge the tubular member I8, thus imparting tension of plate I3 bears against the inner face of the to said spring, and which tension is subsequently as face plate iii. utilized when the window sash is moved upward. 5
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a spring sash balance that is relatively simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture, capable of beingreadily assembled or taken apart, also capable of being easily and quickly installed and said spring sash balance being very eflective in performing the functions for which it is intended.
It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved spring sash balance may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope oi which is set forth in the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
A spring sash balance comprising a two-part housing, one 01 which parts includes a face plate, said face plate having a pocket, a lip projecting from the other part of the housing into said pocket, a tubular member connecting the intermediate portions oi. the parts of said housing, said tubular member being provided with a slot, a drum mounted for rotation on said tubular mem her, a lip projecting inwardly from the periphery of said drum, a spiral spring, a hook formed on the inner end of said spiral spring, said hook being positioned within said tubular member with the free end of said hook engagingthe inner surface of said tubular member opposite that side oi the slot engaged by the spring in passing through said slot, a hook on the outer end 01 said spring, which hook engages the lip on said drum, a tape of flexible metal carried on the periphery or said drum, the inner end of which tape is secured to said drum and the outer portion of which tape passes through an opening in said face plate. a
