Description
April 18; 1939. M JOHNTZ 2,155,193
GREETING CARD Filed May '7, 1958 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 18, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GREETING CARD Application May 7, 1938, Serial No. 206,629
7 Claims.
This invention relates to greeting cards, and has for its principal object to provide a novel design and folding arrangement for enhancing interest and attractiveness of a card.
Other important objects of the invention are to provide a folded card construction wherein the unfolding procedure follows a progressively printed message; to provide a folded card construction having pictorial or decorative features on one side and a message upon the other, wherein both sides are progressively exposed with unfolding; and to provide a zigzag form that may be printed and cut to shape Without the waste of paper stock.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, as hereinafter pointed out, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a folded greeting card embodying the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the card after the first two folds have been opened.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one side of the card completely unfolded.
Fig. 4 is a similar view of the opposite side of the card after it has been completely unfolded.
Referring more in detail to the drawing:
l designates a greeting card that is formed of paper or other sheet stock of fold-able character, and which includes a blank consisting of a plurality of interconnected geometrical sections, for example rectangles 2 to B inclusive, all of substantially equal size and arranged in zigzag relation, that is, the upper portion of the rectangle 3 forms a continuation of the base portion of the rectangle 2, and the side of the rectangle 4 forms a continuation of the side of the rectangle 3, Likewise, the upper portion of the rectangle 5 forms a continuation of the base of the rectangle portion 4, the side of the rectangle portion 6 forms a continuation of the side of the rectangle 5, the upper portion of the rectangle with the base of the rectangle 6, and the side of the rectangle 8 with the side of the rectangle 'l, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The adjoining sides of the adjacent rectangles are provided with scores or fold lines 9, III, II, l2, l3 and I4.
While various pictorial illustrations and sentiments may be printed on the card, those illustrated pertain to a message for a sick person. For example, the rectangles on one side of the card carry the illustration of a winding road I5,
(Cl. LG-35) which extends from the rectangle 2 at the top to the bottom rectangles where it terminates in characters suggestive of cheer, with the word recovery, thereby pictorially illustrating the phrase on the road to recovery.
Applied on the opposite side of the card within the rectangle 2, which constitutes the cover of the card, is the title, for example, a message for someone whos sick, While the rectangles 4, 5, 6, 1 and 8 respectively bear the phrases "heres wishing you more 8: more cheer,; and hoping youll start feeling better and better,; and getting farther; and farther; along the road to; the phrases being located so that when the card is folded they will be positioned in proper reading order and readable progressively with unfolding of the card.
To fold the card the rectangular portion 8 is folded on the line H to overlie the rectangular portion 1. The rectangular portions 8 and 1 are then folded on the line l3 to overlie the rectangular portion 6, after which the rectangular portions 8, l and 6 are folded on the score line l2 to overlie the rectangular portion 5, and the folded portions are then folded on the line H to overlie the rectangular portion 4, followed by a fold on the line H), which brings all of the rectangular portions in superimposed relation with the rectangular portion 3, which constitutes the back cover of the card. The rectangular portion 2 is then folded on the line 9 to cover the superimposed portions and to form the cover of the card which bears the title a message for someone whos sick, as shown in Fig. 1.
In receiving the card the title is noted and the cover 2 opened exposing the rectangular portion 4 bearing the words heres wishing you more 8; more cheer, and exposing the rectangular portion 2 bearing the start of the road illustration. The next fold is on the line H] as shown in Fig. 2, which exposes the rectangular portion 5 bearing the phrase and hoping youll start feeling better and better, and which exposes the rectangular portion 3 showing the continuation of the road. The next operation is to unfold the card on the line H, exposing the further continuation of the road on the rectangle 4 and the phrase and getting farther on the rectangular portion 6. The next fold is to the right on the line l2, exposing the pictorial section of the road on the rectangle 5 and the phrase and farther on the rectangle 'l. The next fold is downwardly on the fold line l3 to expose the rectangular portion 6 and the phrase along the road to on the rectangular portion 8. The final operation is to unfold the rectangular portion 8 on the line H to expose the terminus of the road and the word recovery, which is carried on the rectangular portions 1 and 8. It is thus obvious that the message or phrases on one side are exposed progressively with unfolding of the card so that the pictorial illustrations and phrases are both rendered visible in their proper sequence without turning of the card from one side to the other.
From the foregoing it is obvious that I have provided a folded greeting card that is of novel design and arrangement so as to enhance interest and attractiveness thereof and which is constructed so that the unfolding procedure follows a progressively printed message in conjunction with related pictorial illustrations or decorative features.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A greeting card including a foldable sheet member having a plurality of similarly shaped portions arranged in zigzag order and separated by fold lines on which said portions fold one upon another, and characters on the respective faces of said portions and rendered progressively visible when the card is unfolded.
2. A greeting card including a foldable sheet member having a plurality of rectangular portions interconnected in zigzag order and respectively defined at said connections by fold lines on which the rectangular portions fold one upon another, and characters on the respective faces of said portions and rendered progressively visible when the card is unfolded.
3. A greeting card including a foldable sheet member having a plurality of rectangular portions arranged with two of said portions interconnected along the bottom and upper edges respectively to form front and back covers, said other portions being connected in zigzag order along adjacent edges and inclined to one another, said connections being defined by fold lines on which the rectangular portions fold one upon another to be enclosed between those forming said covers.
4. A greeting card including a foldable sheet member having a plurality of rectangular portions arranged with two of said portions interconnected along the bottom and upper edges respectively to form front and back covers, said other portions being connected in zigzag order along adjacent edges and inclined to one another, said connections being defined by fold lines on which the rectangular portions fold one upon another to be enclosed between those forming said covers, and characters on the respective faces of said portions and rendered progressively visible when the card is unfolded.
5. A greeting card consisting of a foldable sheet member including a plurality of geometrically shaped sections, two of said sections being connected at their side edges and the other of said sections being respectively connected with the upper and lower edge portions of said respective sections that are interconnected at their side edges and provided with folds at said points of connection whereby one section is foldable one over the other in zigzag order.
6. A greeting card consisting of a foldable sheet member including a plurality of similarly shaped sections arranged in zigzag order with top and side edge portions of alternate sections re-' spectively connected with bottom and side edge portions of adjacent sections and separated by fold lines on which said sections fold one upon another.
7. A greeting card consisting of a foldable sheet member including a plurality of rectangular sections interconnected in zigzag order with the top and side edge portions of alternate sections respectively connected with the bottom and side edge portions of adjacent sections and respectively defined at said connections by fold lines on which the rectangular sections fold one upon another.
