This invention relates to containers and more particularly to a cardboard box which is formed so as to provide a detachable cover and detachable sections for the purpose of reducing the size of the box when the contents thereof are reduced.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide a cardboard box container which is scored around its perimeter so as to provide detachable sections to permit the height of the box to be reduced to conform to the contents of the container.

Another object of my invention is to provide a cardboard box container which can be readily reduced in size, which is neat and compact in appearance and which is economical to manufacture.

Other objects will become apparent as this description progresses.

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the container, with a section broken away, showing the container when the upper section has been detached.

Figure 3 is a top plan View, partly in section, showing the cover fitting over the container when in the position of Figure 2.

Figure 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of construction showing a container having diverging side and end walls with the greatest perimeter adjacent the top.

Referring to the drawing, I provide the conventional container ill with a plurality of scorings ll, l2, and l3. Each of these scorings extend continuously around the side and end walls of the container and are adapted to provide detachable wall sections l4 and I5 and a top or cover section I6. To remove the contents of the container it is necessary to perforate or tear along the scored line I3, after which the cover can be removed. After a portion of the contents has been emptied and it is desired to reduce the size of the box, the scored lines 12 and then H can be perforated or folded and the sections l5 and It detached from the remainder of the box. The cover it can then be placed over the undetached wall sections as shown in Figures 2 and 3. In the drawing shown in Figures 1 to 3 inelusive the side and end walls of the container have to be bowed slightly inwardly to accommodate the cover. However in the modified form of construction as shown in Figure 4, the side and end walls l8 and I9 are slightly tapered towards the bottom, thus providing a cover W with a perimeter to fit over the wall sections without, bowing the walls. I have found that containers constructed in accordance with my invention are very beneficial for the reason that as the contents of the container are emptied the container can be reduced in size not only for the purpose of conserving space but also for the purpose of making visible at a glance the approximate contents remaining in the container.

It will be understood that various modifications and changes can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

What I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a cardboard container having scored lines which are adapted to divide said container into a detachable cover section and a plurality of equally sized detachable wall sections, said cover having depending walls narrower than the detachable wall sections and adapted to cooperate with the uppermost undetached wall section to close said container without crimping thereof after said cover is initially detached.

2. In a cardboard container having fiat top and bottom portions with the top portion of a greater area than the bottom portion, a plurality of scored lines on the walls of said container adapted to divide said container into a detachable cover section and equally sized dietachable wall sections, said cover adapted to fit over the undetached wall sections without crimping of same after said cover is initially detached.

3. In a cardboard container of substantially rectangular shape having fiat top and bottom sections and upright side and end walls, said top section having a greater perimeter than the bottom section, said side and end walls being scored to provide a plurality of equally sized detachable sections and a detachable cover, said cover being formed by said top section and depending side and end sections narrower than said detachable sections and adapted to fit over the undetached wall sections without crimping of same after said cover is initially detached.
