Application March 19, 1938, Serial No. 196,829
2 Claims.
The invention relates to a door locking device and more particularly to a jimmy-proof interlocking door lock device.
Among the objects are to provide a device of extreme simplicity and one of excellent appearance. Due to its simplicity the device readily lends itself to economics of manufacture and ease of installation.
The invention contemplates a pair of comparatively long rigid interlocking plates, one attached to the door and having a standard lock set therein and the other attached to the door jamb and having the keeper suitably cooperating therewith. A device is thus provided Which will effectually frustrate the attempts of any unauthorized person trying to force the door with a jimmy or other tool.
Other advantages and objects will become apparent as the specification proceeds. Referring to the drawing forming a part thereof and in which a preferred embodiment is illustrated:
Fig. 1 is an outside elevational view of a door showing the interlocking plates and lock attached thereto;
Figs. 2 and 3 are cross-sectional views on a larger scale and taken on lines 2-2 and 33 respectively of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an edge view of the door jamb showing one of the interlocking plates and the keeper; and
Fig. 5 is a face View of the interlocking plate which is secured to the door.
Referring again to said drawing the reference numeral ill designates the door and l I the door jamb or frame. The door jamb has the customary strip l2 which may or may not be part of the door jamb or frame.
A substantially long narrow plate l3 of rigid construction is secured to the outside of the door I E! preferably by four bolts I4. The bolts l4 have round heads and square shoulders, the square shoulders cooperating with square holes IS in the plate. The bolts 14 are provided with nuts it on the inner side of the door to securely hold the plate in position. It will be apparent with this construction it will be impossible to remove the plate It from the outside of the door.
At approximately its central portion, lengthwise, the plate has an opening 20 which accommodates the cylinder 2! of a conventional lock 22, having the usual bolt 23. It will be noted the opening at is somewhat elongated so as to compensate for slight variations in the position of the lock.
The plate has formed on one side a short lateral flange 24. The flange is made integral with the plate and coextensive lengthwise of the plate and preferably extends from the plate at an angle of slightly less than 90. In positioning the plate l3 on the door the flange 24 is located substan- 5 tially flush with the edge of the door.
Another plate 30 is secured to the door jamb or frame H by a plurality of flat-headed wood screws 3 i. This plate is of exactly the same length as the plate l3 and is provided coextensive with 0 its front edge with an integral turned over portion or lip, 32. As may be noted in Figs, 2 and 3 this turned over portion is U-shaped in cross-section and extends beyond the outer edge of the door it! so as to embrace the flange 24. The outer edge of the lip 32 contacts the plate i3 when the door is in the closed or locked position and the keeper 35 properly adjusted to the thickness of the door. A joint is thus made between the lip 32 and the plate [3 between which it is impossible to enter a jimmy or other prying tool as a packing blade for contact with the bolt.
The plate has a depressed portion 33 in which the extension 3 1 of the keeper 35 is accommodated. Thus a flush surface is maintained for 25 the entire length of the plate so as not to interfere with the opening or closing of the door. This depressed portion 33 is provided with a plurality of spaced slots 36. The screws 37 securing the keeper in place pass through a pair or more of these slots. By providing a plurality of slots, numerous diiferent arrangements of screws in difierent styles of keepers may be accommodated, both as to vertical and horizontal variations. It 35 will be understood the bolt 23 engages the keeper 35 when the door is in the locked position.
I claim:
1. A door interlocking device having in combination, an elongated plate of rigid construction, 40 means for securing said plate to a door, a lock cooperating with said plate, a lateral flange formed integral with and coextensive with said plate, said flange extending outwardly from said plate adjacent the edge of the door, a plate secured to the door jamb at right angles to the door plate and being the same length as the door plate, a depressed portion at the central region of the door jamb plate, a keeper, the extension of which is accommodated in said depressed portion, and a turned over lip formed on the door jamb plate coextensive with the length thereof, said lip completely embracing the flange on the door plate and having its outer edge contacting the door plate when the door is in its closed position so as to form a joint which cannot be entered with a jimmy or other prying tool.
2. A door interlocking device having in combination, an elongated plate of rigid construction, means for securing said plate to a door, a lock cooperating with said plate, a lateral flange substantially coextensive with said plate, a plate secured to the door jamb at right angles to the door plate and being the same length as the door plate, a depressed portion at the central region of the door jamb plate, a keeper, the extension of which is accommodated in said depressed portion, a plurality of horizontally disposed slots in said depressed portion to accommodate difierent arrangements of screws in different styles of keepers, and a turned over lip formed on the door jamb plate coextensive with the length thereof, said lip embracing the flange on the door plate when the door is in its closed position so as to form a joint Which cannot be entered with a jimmy or other prying tool JOSE MORA.
