EVERETT W. BIGELOW, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEM ENT IN CORSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,643, dated November 5, 1878 application filed August 22, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVERETT W. BIGELOW, of Boston, of the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corsets and Busks therefor 5 and do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figurel denotes an outer side elevation, Fig. 2 a rear view, and Fig.3 a transverse section, of the front portions of the two separate body parts of a corset, my invention being shown as applied thereto. Fig. 4 is aside view of the separate or detachable busk without its lacing.
The invention consists, first, in acorset provided at its inner edges with connecting studs and clasps and supporting-steels therefor, and having arranged between such steels, and projecting from one of the two body portions, a fly, as described, to connect with the corset a detachable busk separate from the said studs, clasps, and steels; second, in a corset provided at its front edges with connecting studs and clasps and their supporting-steels, and also'having a fly and a detachable husk, all being arranged and combined essentially as set forth; third, in the bush as composed of two steels and a covering therefor, having separate pockets for reception of such steels, and also having between such pockets a space provided with lacing holes or eyelets, or with such and a lacing, all being substantially as represented.
When a bush is permanently fixed or sewed in or to a corset and becomes accidentally broken, as frequently happens, in such cases much inconvenience as well as loss is occasioned thereby, especially when the party having the corset is not conveniently situated for having it repaired.
In carrying out my improvement, I construct one of the body parts A A of the corset with a flexile fly, B, arranged along its inner edge, or to project from the front-steel pocket, at, in manner as represented, the steel b of such pocket being furnished with a series of buttons or fastening-studs, c, projecting from it in the usual manner, to engage with a set of loops, clasps, or catches, 0, projecting from a corresponding steel inserted 1n the opposite part A of the corset. The said fly'I provide with a series or sets of lacing holes or eyelets, d, which may be arranged in it in pairs, in manner as shown. This fly is for connecting to its body part A the detachable busk D, which also has a corresponding series or sets of lacing holes or eyelets, 0, arranged in it in like manner, to receive with those of the fly a lacing, O, which I usually fasten at one end directly to the husk, or, having laced it through the fly and the busk, I properly secure or tie it to itself at or nearits ends.
Instead of the lacing and holes, as described,
buttons and button-holes may be employed to connect the bush and fly; but with the lacing an additional advantage is gained-that is, the busk may be curved more less, and its curve be retained by drawing the lacing tight and fastening it at its free end to itself or the busk.
The busk I usually compose of two parallel steels, ff, and a covering, g, having pockets h h to receive them, there being a narrow space of cloth, 6, between the two pockets, to re ceive the lacing holes or eyelets, as represented. Thismode of constructing the busk is productive of advantages, as it enables the busk to be folded along its middle, one half upon the other, and enables the bush to fit or better adjust itself to the wearer than would be the case were its covering to contain one wide band of steel only.
Fig. 5 is an elevation of the two entire body portions A A of the corset provided with the detachable busk.
I am aware that before my invention corsets have been provided in their fronts with detachable springs, such being as shown in Patents Nos. 86,183, 48,045, 167,958, and 201, 490, all of which, though in some respects like my invention, differ very materially therefrom in others, as will be seen by reference to such patents.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as such is as followsthat is to say: 1. A corset provided at its inner edges with connecting studs 0 and clasps c, and their supporting-steels, as set forth, and having arranged between the said steels, and projecting from one of the body parts A A of the cor set, a fly, B, as described, to connect with the corset a detachable busk, D, separate from said studs, clasps, .and their supportingsteels, all being substantially as represented.
2. A corset, A A, provided at its front edges with connecting-studs c and clasps c, and their supporting-steels, and also having a fly, B, and a detachable busk, D, arranged with and applied to such fly, substantially as set forth.
3. A busk, D, composed of two steels and of a covering therefor, having arranged in it, as shown, separate pockets for reception of such steels, and also having between such pockets lacing holes or eyelets or devices for as explained.
