My invention relates to improvements in a handbag and like containers and a frame for the same.

An object of my invention is to provide a handbag of simple construction and attractive appearance which is so made up that a specially constructed frame member may be attached thereto without the need of any further labor on the handbag in order to secure it and the frame together. Referring to the drawings, I have shown, in Figs. 1-4, a ladys handbag having a container made of a suitable covering material and a frame (Fig. '7) having two sets of arms I and 2, the arms arranged at each end of the bag being 0hingedly connected at one of their ends by a pivot pin 3 and the other ends of the arms of each set are inter-connected by the crossbars 4 and 5. The arms 6 and 1 of each set cross each other (Fig. 8) in the same manner and for the 5;;same purpose as illustrated and described in United States Letters Patent No. 1,891,833, so that if the frame is in closed position it may be opened by gripping the arms of each set at a position below their intersection and pressing 5ogthe arms toward each other, or, if the frame is in open position, it may be closed by pressing together any portions of the frame halves which are located above the intersection of the arms. The snap acting means I is positioned between fii'fthe crossed arms 6 and 1 when the frame is in the closed position in order to retain it in that position.

Referring in more detail to my improved bag construction, I have shown in Fig. 3 a handbag or pocketbook preferably made of flexible mate- 5 rial and having the front and rear side walls 8 and 9 which are joined at their lower sides so that they mayhave a swinging movement relative to each other. The end walls I0 are arranged between the side walls 8 and 9 and. con- 10 structed so as to permit the relative swinging thereof. I have attached the lining I I to the inside of the flexible covering in the usual manner.

At the top edges of the front and rear side walls 8 and 9 I have secured the bag top members I2 and I3 which are constructed to run the entire length thereof. The members I2 and I3 are formed by folding over a strip of the bag covering material at the top whereby each memher will have two opposed faces hanging downwardlytoward the side walls 8 and 9. The opposed faces are joined together for a certain distance toward their free ends, but at respective points on each of the two bag top members they are separated sufficiently to form the hollowed pocket means I4 and I5 which are constructed to receive and conceal the crossbars 4 and 5 of the frame member. At a point below the hollowed means I4 and I5 the opposed faces of each of the bag top members are brought together and stitched between the corresponding side wall and lining attached thereto.

Referring in more detail to the construction of my improved frame, in Fig. '7, I have shown a front view of my frame including the two sets of arms I and 2, connected at their ends by the crossbars 4 and 5, the bar 5 being in parallel relationship with'the bar 4 and hence invisible in the drawing.

,It is my aim, in the preferred form of my in- 40 vention, to .be able to separate one of the sets of arms from the remainder of the frame. In order to carry out my purpose, I have provided, as shown in Figs. 6 and 10, a cylindrical nut I6 threaded internally and rigidly secured within each of two side-by-side free ends I[ and I8 of the hollow crossbars 4 and 5. The nut I6 may be anchored therein by a drive fit or any other suitable means- For the purpose of connecting the arms of one of the sets I and 2 to the crossbar ends I! and I8, Fig. 6, I have provided with an end of each arm of the set I a screw means I9 which, in my preferred form, has a knob-shaped head portion 20 and a shoulder portion 2| having a sleeves 25 ,(Figs. 6 and 10), the bores of which, in my preferred form are not threaded. A frame having a set of arms at each end, the arms of at least one set being connected at one of their ends and crossbars connecting the two sets of arms. said frame being constructed so that at least one set of arms could be removed from the remainder of the frame, the ends of the arms of at least one of said sets crossing each other when the frame is in closed position, and a snap acting means between the crossed ends for holding the frame in closed position.

9. A frame having a set of arms at each end, the arms of at least one set being connected at one of their ends and crossbars connecting the two sets of arms, a nut and screw means adjacent to where the arms are connected to the crossbars so that at least one set of arms could be removed from the remainder of the frame, the ends of the arms of at least one of said sets crossing each other when the frame is in closed position, and a fastening means whereby said frame may be held in said position.
