CABINET Filed May 4, 1955 if* y Patented Mar. 10, 1936 UNETED STATES PATE OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to cabinets, and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide an article of furniture of this kind particularly designed and adapted for use for the serving of wines or other beverages and also to be used as a smoking set or stand.
It is also an object of the invention to provide an article of furniture of this kind including a cover or lid movable from a position upon the cabinet to a second position to one side thereof, together with means for raising a drinking set or other articles into an available position when the lid or cover is moved to one side of the cabinet and to cause said set to disappear within the cabinet when the lid or cover is returned to its position upon the cabinet.
'Ihe invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved cabinet whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be denitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustratingk a cabinet constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention with the lid or cover' in open position;
Figure 2 is a, fragmentary vertical sectional view taken through the upper portion of Figure 1 with the lidor cover in closed position;
Figure 3 is a detailed sectional View taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 4 4 of Figure 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing C denotes a cabinet of desired design and configuration including the corner posts I and the side panels 2 and also including in its construction the sliding drawer 3 and a door 4 whereby access may be had to the lower portion of the cabinet structure C. 'Ihe lower portion of the cabinet structure C provides a compartment for the storage of magazines, a box of cigars, etc.
The upper portion of the cabinet C is open, and nested within said upper portion of the cabinet C is a supplemental cabinet or box structure S also open at the top and preferably secured to and depending from the top frame 5 of the cabinet C. The side walls 5 are spaced from the panels 2 of the cabinet for a purpose which will hereinafter be apparent.
Coacting with the upper end of the cabinet C is a lid or cover L which, when in one position, 5 closes the upper open end of the cabinet or more particularly of the cabinet or box S. As herein disclosed the lid or cover Lis of a hinge type with the hinges so positioned and located that when the lid or cover 3 is swung out to a position to 10 one side of the cabinet the hinge edge of the lid or cover will butt or Contact the adjacent portion of the framing 5 and thus maintain the lid or cover in a position substantially flush with the top of the cabinet C proper with, of course, the nor- 15 mally under surface or face of the lid or cover L upwardly disposed. Suitably secured to this normally under face or surface of the lid or cover L are the smoking articles l, such as an ash tray, match holder and cigarette box, and each of 20 which articles are preferably detachably held to the normally under surface of the lid or cover L by suitable fastening means 8. These articles may be permanently secured to such surface by a suitable adhesive or otherwise as preferred.
Snugly fitting within the supplemental cabinet or box S is a table or platform 9 provided along opposite margins with the outstanding guide lugs I0 Which are received within the grooves or channels II produced in the adjacent walls 6 of the 30 supplemental cabinet or box S.
Positioned below and extending across the table or platform 9 and suitably secured thereto is a rod I2 which extends beyond the opposite sides of the table or platform to provide the trunnions I4. 35
These trunnions I4 are disposed between the vertically arranged slots I 5 provided in the adjacent wall 6 of the cabinet or box S and into the spaces between said walls 6 and the opposed panels 2. The extended portions of the trun- 40 nions I4 each also passes through a slot I6 provided in an end portion of a straight lever I'I, said lever being pivotally connected, as at I8, with the adjacent side walls 6 of the supplemental cabinet or box S. This lever I'I swings in the same general direction as the `adjacent slot I5.
Substantially midway its ends each of the straight levers !'I is provided with an outstanding lug I9 which is received within a slot 2B provided in an end portion of an angular lever 2|. This lever 2l extends up thro-ugh a slot 22 provided in the framing 5 with the outer end portion of thS lever 2l pivotally connected, as at 23, with the 55 normally under surface of the lid or cover L adjacent to a side thereof.
The connection hereinbefore described between the lid or cover L and the table or platform 9 results in the table or platform 9 being elevated to a position substantially flush with the upper or open end of the supplemental cabinet or box S when the lid or cover L is swung outwardly to a position to one side of the cabinet C as is illustrated in Figure l of the accompanying drawing.
When the lid or cover L is swung or moved into its normal position or to a position to close the upper open end of the cabinet C, the table or platform 9 will be caused to move downwardly of the supplemental cabinet or box S.
This table or platform S in its upper surface is provided with the pockets or recesses 24 to provide mountings for the various articles 25, such as a bottle and glasses.
Arranged within the lower portion of the supplemental cabinet or box S and at all times below the table or platform 9 is a cushion 26 of any desired material but preferably a sponge rubber pad. This pad or cushion serves to eliminate any shock to the platform or table 9 as the same is lowered or more particularly to eliminate vibrating of the articles thereon. This is due to the fact that the pad 25 is of a sufficient thickness to be contacted with by the table or platform 9 before said table or platform reaches the limit of its downward movement.
When the lid or cover L is extended into open position, as is illustrated in Figure l, the table or platform 9 with its load will be effectively maintained in raised position.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a cabinet constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facilitywith which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
