    CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION
  • The present application is related to and claims priority from prior provisional application Ser. No. 61/327,867, filed Apr. 26, 2010 which application is incorporated herein by reference.
  • COPYRIGHT NOTICE
  • A portion of the disclosure of this patent document contains material which is subject to copyright protection. The copyright owner has no objection to the facsimile reproduction by anyone of the patent document or the patent disclosure, as it appears in the Patent and Trademark Office patent file or records, but otherwise reserves all copyright rights whatsoever. 37 CFR 1.71(d).
  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • The following includes information that may be useful in understanding the present invention(s). It is not an admission that any of the information provided herein is prior art, or material, to the presently described or claimed inventions, or that any publication or document that is specifically or implicitly referenced is prior art.
  • 1. FIELD OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention relates generally to the field of cards and more specifically relates to a deck of cards using five suits for use in entertaining individuals via novel card games.
  • 2. DESCRIPTION OF THE RELATED ART
  • Consumers are always looking for new forms of entertainment they can play with family and friends. Card games are popular among individuals of every age group, but after awhile conventional games become boring and new versions or modifications are wanted. A playing card is a piece of specially prepared heavy paper, thin cardboard, or thin plastic, figured with distinguishing motifs and used as one of a set for playing card games. Playing cards are typically palm-sized for convenient handling.
  • A complete set of cards is called a pack or deck, and the subset of cards held at one time by a player during a game is commonly called a hand. A deck of cards may be used for playing a great variety of card games, some of which may also incorporate gambling. Because playing cards are both standardized and commonly available, they are often adapted for other uses, such as magic tricks, cartomancy, or building a house of cards.
  • The face of each card may carry markings that distinguish it from the other cards in the deck and determine its use under the rules of the game being played. The back of each card is normally identical for all cards in any particular deck, and usually of a single color or formalized design. Usually every card will be smooth however some decks have braille to allow blind people to read the card number and suit. The back of playing cards is sometimes used for advertising. For most games, the cards are assembled into a deck, and their order is randomized by shuffling.
  • Games using a standard four suit deck, may be enticing, however an entire new level of challenge and excitement may be added by using a five suit deck with enhanced games. Therefore a need exists for a deck of cards that uses a five-suit deck.
  • Various attempts have been made to solve the above-mentioned problems such as those found in U.S. Pat. Nos. 6,155,567; 5,887,873; 4,489,948; 2004/0023706; and 6,070,877. This prior art is representative of decks of playing cards. None of the above inventions and patents, taken either singly or in combination, is seen to describe the invention as claimed.
  • Ideally, a set of playing cards using a five suit deck of cards should be user-friendly, exciting to play with and be manufactured at a modest expense. Thus, a need exists for a reliable Dragon card system to play existing games and new games to avoid the above-mentioned problems.
  • BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • In view of the foregoing disadvantages inherent in the known deck of cards art, the present invention provides a novel Dragon card system. The general purpose of the present invention, which will be described subsequently in greater detail is to provide a deck of cards with the four standard suits plus an additional suit used to play existing games and is especially appropriate for playing various versions of bid whist.
  • The present set of playing cards using a five suit deck of cards described herein preferably comprises: a heart suit; a diamond suit; a spade suit; a club suit; and a star suit. The five suit deck of cards system including the heart suit, the diamond suit, the spade suit, the club suit, and the star suit and are usable for playing at least one card game. Further, the set of playing cards using a five suit deck of cards may further comprise at least one joker. The set of playing cards using a five suit deck may be used for playing the card games Push 25, Fire Flight, Dragon Whist, Triple Threat, and Star Whist.
  • A kit is embodied herein for the Dragon card system comprising: a five suit deck of cards; and a set of user instructions for playing the card games Push 25, Fire Flight, Dragon Whist, Triple Threat, and Star Whist.
  • In accordance with the embodiments of the present invention a preferred method of use is disclosed herein comprising: dealing out the five suit deck of cards; a player bidding as per hand the player is dealt; and a dealer keeping score as per the bidding of the player.
  • The present invention holds significant improvements and serves as a Dragon cards system. For purposes of summarizing the invention, certain aspects, advantages, and novel features of the invention have been described herein. It is to be understood that not necessarily all such advantages may be achieved in accordance with any one particular embodiment of the invention. Thus, the invention may be embodied or carried out in a manner that achieves or optimizes one advantage or group of advantages as taught herein without necessarily achieving other advantages as may be taught or suggested herein. The features of the invention which are believed to be novel are particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed in the concluding portion of the specification. These and other features, aspects, and advantages of the present invention will become better understood with reference to the following drawings and detailed description.

Upon reading this specification, it should be appreciated that, under appropriate circumstances, considering such issues as design preference, user preferences, marketing preferences, cost, structural requirements, available materials, technological advances, etc., other methods of use arrangements such as, for example, different orders within above-mentioned list, elimination or addition of certain game, bidding or other such steps, etc., may be sufficient.
  • The rules for the games available for the present invention are as follows: A first game played using five suit deck of cards 102 is Push 25. Push 25 may only be played using Dragon cards system 100. Push 25 may be played with 5 or 6 players. When playing with 5 players the Joker is not used, but when playing with 6 players a player may add the Joker to the deck. When the game starts, players choose the first dealer by shuffling the cards and dealing them face up, one by one, to each player. The first player to get a star is the game's first dealer.
  • After each round, the person to the left of the previous dealer will deal the cards for the next round. The dealer must shuffle the cards and if playing with 5 players deal 13 cards (no Joker), if playing with 6 players deal 11 cards (with the Joker). This game is played with no “Kitty” or reserve stack.
  • The turn to bid goes around the table only once, starting with the player to the left of the dealer. Each bid consist of a number and a suffix “Uptown”, “Downtown” or “No Trump”. The number indicates the number of books the player can make with their hand, “Uptown” means the player intend to name a trump suit and that high cards will win. “Downtown” means the player intends to name a trump suit and that low cards will win. “No trump” means that there will be no trump and that if a player wins the bid, the player will then determine whether “high” or “low” cards will have preference. Each player must either pass or name a bid which is higher than the previous bid. A bid of a higher number outranks a bid of a lower number, and a bid in no trumps, outranks a bid of the same number “Uptown” or “Downtown”. “Downtown” bids outrank “Uptown” bids.
  • Every player gets one point for every book that the player makes except the bidder who only gets points if the bidder makes their bid. If the dealer doesn't make their bid they receive 0 points. The first player to reach 25 points or the player with the highest score after 25 points wins. If a player does not take the bid, then the dealer must bid at least 1, then the player scores by making books on the table. If the bidder makes more than the player bid, then the player only gets the bid amount in points. The remaining books made by everyone else counts as one point for each book.
  • A second game played using five suit deck of cards 102 is Fire Fight. Fire Fight is played very similar to Bid Whist. Fire fight can only be played using Dragon cards system 100 and the Joker. When playing Fire Fight, players choose the first dealer by shuffling the cards and dealing them face up, one by one, to each player. The first player to get a star is the game's first dealer. After each round, the person to the left of the previous dealer will deal the cards for the next round.
  • The dealer must shuffle the cards and if playing with 5 players deal 12 cards, if playing with 6 players deal each player 10 cards. The six remaining cards are placed face down in the center of the table to form the “Kitty” or the reserve stack of cards. The dealer will deal the cards one at a time, going clockwise around the table. The six card “Kitty” can be dealt at any time, with only one exception. The first five cards of the deal of the last five cards of the deal cannot be placed in the reserve stack. The joker does not count in a No Trumps game.
  • When playing with 5 players, the dealer must make 4 books and the other players must make 2 books. When playing with 6 players, the dealer must make 5 books and the other players must make 1 book, Players that don't make their books get 0 points. The player get points equal to the number of books the players are suppose to make, then 1 point for every book over that. The deal goes around the table twice, the player with the highest score at the end of both rounds win.
  • A third game played using five suit deck of cards 102 is Dragon Whist. Dragon Whist is also played very similar to Bid Whist. Dragon Whist can only be played using Dragon cards system 100 and the Joker. When the games starts, players choose the first dealer by shuffling the cards and dealing them face up one by one, to each player. The first player to get a star is the game's first dealer. After each round, the person to the left of the previous dealer will deal the cards for the next round.
  • The dealer must shuffle the cards and deal each player 15 cards. The six remaining cards are placed face down in the center of the table to form the “kitty”, or the reserve stack of the cards. The dealer will deal the cards one at a time going clockwise around the table. The six cards in the “kitty” can be dealt at any time, with only one exception. The first five cards of the deal and the last five cards of the deal cannot be placed in the reserve stack.
  • The turn to bid goes around the table only once, starting with the player on the left of the dealer. Each bid consist of a number of 2 to 7, and a suffix ‘Uptown,”, “Downtown”, or “No Trump”. The number indicates the number of books above 8, that the bidding team will contract to win. For example, a bid of 5 is a promise to win at least 13 books (8+5). As there are 15 books in all, 7 is the highest possible bid. “Uptown” means the player intends to name a trump suit and high cards will win. “Downtown” means the player intends to name a trump suit and low cards will win. “No trump” means that there will be no trump and that if the player wins the bid, the player will then determine whether “high” or “low” cards will have preference.
  • Each player must either pass or name a bid which is higher than the previous bid. A bid of a higher number outranks a bid of a lower number, and a bid in no trumps, outranks a bid of the same number “Uptown” or “Downtown.” “Downtown” bids outrank “Uptown” bids. Ranks of bids are as follows:
  • 2 Uptown 6 Books set's any bid of 2
    2 Downtown
    2 No Trump
    3 Uptown 5 Books set's any bid of 3
    3 Downtown
    3 No Trump
    4 Uptown 4 Books set's any bid of 4
    4 Downtown
    4 No Trump
    5 Uptown 3 Books set's any bid of 5
    5 Downtown
    5 No Trump
    6 Uptown 2 Books set's any bid of 6
    6 Downtown
    6 No Trump
    7 Uptown 1 Books set's any bid of 5
    7 Downtown
    7 No Trump
  • Note that when the player bids, intending to name a trump suit, the player preferably indicates the direction the players are bidding (“Uptown” or “Downtown”), but the player does not name the intended suit until the player has won the bid. On the other hand, when bidding a “No Trump”, the player does not indicate the direction (“Uptown” or “Downtown”) until the player has won the bid. If the first three players pass, the dealer is forced to bid. Since there is no advantage in bidding more than the minimum 2, the dealer in this case will normally bid a 2 (“Uptown”, “Downtown” or in a “No Trump”). Again, when a player places a bid indicating they choose a trump suit, they should not reveal which suit chosen until they have control of the bid.
  • The highest bidder will begin the game play by naming one of the five suits as a trump suit. Or if the bid was considered “No Trump”, the player chooses between “Uptown” and “Downtown”. Once the play is established, the highest bidder will pick up the “kitty” and then discard six cards. These six cards are the bidder's first book.
  • The higher bidder will then start the play by laying down the first card, this card can be any card and each player must follow suit. The player who throws the highest ranking card will win the “book”. If a player does not have a card that follows suit, the player can opt to lay a “trump” card or they can lay a card of a different suit.
  • A trump card will always beat a non-trump card during the game play. If more than one “trump” card is played, the person who laid down the highest ranking trump card will win that “book.” Since the high ranking cards are determined by the bid at the beginning of the game, there are various possibilities of play during the game.
  • In a winning bid of “Uptown” with a trump suit, the cards will rank from highest to lowest, starting with the Joker, Ace, King, and down to the lowest number. An “Uptown” bid with no trump suit will start with Ace, King, Queen, and count down from there.
  • A “Downtown” bid with a trump suit will begin with a Joker, Ace, two and up while a “Downtown” bid with No Trump suit will start with Ace, two, three, and up.
  • When playing a hand with “no trump” the Joker has no value. However, these cards will stay in play and can be used when a player holding these cards cannot follow suit. In the off chance a “No Trump” round is led with Joker, the next person can play any card, and the first card played, that is not a Joker will indicate what suit will follow.
  • If a player has a card in their hand that follows the suit being played, the player must use this card. If this player fails to follow suit, it's called a renege. When a renege occurs, three books that have been won by the reneging team will be awarded to the opposing team. If the reneging team has yet to win three books, the hand is immediately scored with all 15 books awarded to the non-reneging team.
  • A fourth game played using five suit deck of cards 102 is Triple Threat. When the game starts, players choose the first dealer by shuffling the cards and dealing them face up, one by one, to each Player. The first player to get a star is the game's first dealer. After each round, the person to the left of the previous dealer may deal the cards for the next round. This game is played with 6 people making 3 teams. Each player is dealt 10 cards, the remaining six cards will be the “Kitty” or reserve stack.
  • The turn to bid goes around the table only once starting with the player to the left of the dealer. Each bid consists of a number from 1 to 6, and a suffix “Uptown”, “Downtown” or “No Trump”. The number indicates the number of books above 4 that the bidders' team will contract to win—for example a bid of 5 is a promise to win at least 9 books (4+5). As there are 11 books in all, 6 is the highest possible bid.
  • “Uptown” means the player intend to name a trump suit in which high cards will win. “Downtown” means that the player intends to name a trump suit in which low cards will win. “No Trump” means that there will be no trump. If the player wins the bidding the player may then determine whether high or low cards may have preference. Each player preferably must either pass or name a bid. A bid of a higher number outranks a bid or a lower number, a bid in no trumps outranks a bid of the same number, uptown or downtown. Bids of downtown outrank bids of uptown. Rank of bids are as follows:
  • 1 Uptown 6 Books set's any bid of 1
    1 Downtown
    1 No Trump
    2 Uptown 5 Books set's any bid of 2
    2 Downtown
    2 No Trump
    3 Uptown 4 Books set's any bid of 3
    3 Downtown
    3 No Trump
      • In bids from 1 to 3 either one or both teams together can set a bid.
  • 4 Uptown 3 Books set's any bid of 4
    4 Downtown
    4 No Trump
    5 Uptown 2 Books set's any bid of 5
    5 Downtown
    5 No Trump
    6 Uptown 1 Books set's any bid of 6
    6 Downtown
    6 No Trump
      • In bids from 5 to 6 only one team can set a bid with two books.
      • In bids from 1 to 4 if both teams set the bidding team, both teams get points equal to the bid, if only one team sets the bid then only that team gets the points.
      • In bids from 5 to 6 only one team can set a bid with two books.
      • In bids from 1 to 4 if both teams set the bidding team they both get points equal to the bid, if only one team sets the bid then that team gets the points.
  • Note that when the player bid intending to name a trump suit, the player say the direction the player are bidding (“Uptown” or “Downtown”), but the player does not name which suit the player intends to use as trumps until the player wins the bidding. On the other hand when bidding a No Trump, the player does not indicate which direction (Uptown or Downtown) until the player win the bid. Also, with a No Trump bid, the joker doesn't have value. If the first five players pass, the dealer is forced to bid. Since there is no advantage in bidding more than the minimum 1, the dealer in this case will normally bid 1 Uptown, 1 Downtown, or 1 No Trump.
  • The number of the bid indicates the score. For example, a bid of 3 Uptown or 3 Downtown will give the player 3 points. Any Uptown or Downtown bid resulting in all the books being made will give the player 10 points and any No Trump bid resulting in all the books being made will give the player 20 points. All No Trump bids being set means the other teams will double their points.
  • A fifth game played using five suit deck of cards 102 is Star Whist. Star is played very similar to Bid Whist. When the game starts, players choose the first dealer by shuffling the cards and dealing them face up, one by one, to each player. The first player to get a star is the game's first dealer. After each round, the person to the left of the previous dealer will deal the cards for next round.
  • The dealer must preferably shuffle the cards and deal each player 15 cards. The six remaining cards are placed face down in the center of the table to form the “kitty” or the reserve stack of cards. The dealer will deal the cards one at a time going clockwise around the table. The six cards in the “kitty” can be dealt at any time, with only one exception. The first five cards of the deal and the last five cards of the deal cannot be placed in the reserve stack.
  • The turn to bid goes around the table only once starting with the player to the left of the dealer. Each bid consists of a number from 3 to 7, and a suffix “Uptown”, “Downtown” or “No Trump”.
  • The number indicates the number of books above 7 that the bidder's team will contract to win—for example a bid of 5 is a promise to win at least 12 books (7+5), As there are 14 books in all, 7 is the highest possible bid.
  • “Uptown” means the player intend to name a trump suit, and that high cards will win.
  • “Downtown” means that the player intend to name a trump suit, and that low cards will win.
  • “No Trump” means that there will be no trump, and that if the player win the bidding the player will then determine whether high or low cards will have preference.
  • Each player must either pass or name a bid which is higher than the previous bid.
  • A bid of a higher number outranks a bid of a lower number, and a bid in No Trumps outranks a bid of the same number “Uptown” or “Downtown”. Bids of “Downtown” outrank bids of “Uptown”, rank of bids are as follows:
  • 3 Uptown 5 Books set's any bid of 3
    3 Downtown
    3 No Trump
    4 Uptown 4 Books set's any bid of 4
    4 Downtown
    4 No Trump
    5 Uptown 3 Books set's any bid of 5
    5 Downtown
    5 No Trump
    6 Uptown 2 Books set's any bid of 6
    6 Downtown
    6 No Trump
    7 Uptown 1 Books set's any bid of 7
    7 Downtown
    7 No Trump
  • Note that when the player bid intending to name a trump suit, the player indicate the direction the player are bidding (“Uptown” or “Downtown”), but the player do not name which suit the player intend to name as trumps until the player win the bidding. On the other hand when bidding a no trump, the player does not indicate which direction (“Uptown” or “Downtown’), until the player win the bid.
  • When players place bids indicating they will choose a trump suit, they should not reveal which suit they would choose until they have won the bid.
  • The highest bidder will preferably begin the game play by naming one of the five suits as a trump suit. If the bid was considered “No Trump”, the player chooses between “Uptown” and “Downtown.” Once the play is established, the highest bidder will pick up the “kitty” and then discard nine cards, these nine cards are the bidders first book. The other three players will then discard three of their fifteen cards, also known as the “Dump” which are then pushed to the middle of the table, once the cards are placed in the center of the table they cannot be touched or reviewed again. The bid winner collects everyone's “Dump” cards and they are considered as the bid winner's second book. Each player has the opportunity to change the cards in their “Dump” until they are pushed into the center of the table. The bid winner cannot look at the “Dump” cards from other players. The bid winner can only collect them to become his second book.
  • The high bidder will then start the play by laying down the first card. This card can by any card, and other players must follow suit. The player who throws the highest ranking card will win the “book”. If a player does not have a card that follows suit, the player can opt to lay a “trump card” or they can lay a card of a different suit. A trump card will always beat a non-trump card during the game play. If more than one “trump card” is played, the person who laid down the highest ranking trump card will win that “book”. Since the high ranking cards are determined by the bid at the beginning of the game, there are various possibilities of play during the game. In a winning bid of “Uptown” with a trump suit, the cards will rank from highest to lowest starting with the Joker, Ace, King, and down. An “Uptown” bid with no trump suit will start with Ace, King and count down from there. A “Downtown” bid with a trump suit will begin with Joker, Ace, two and up, and a “Downtown” bid with no trump suit will start with Ace, two and up.
  • When playing a hand with “No Trump”, the joker has no value. However, these cards will stay in play and can be laid when the player holding them cannot follow suit. In the off-chance a “No Trump” round is led with a Joker, the next person can play any card, and the first card laid that is not a joker will indicate what suit to follow. If a player has a card in his hand that follows the suit being played, he must use this card. If the player fails to follow suit, it's called a renege. When a renege occurs, three books that have been won by the reneging team will be awarded to the opposing team. But, if the reneging team has yet to win three books, the hand is immediately scored with all 14 books awarded to the non-reneging team.
