Description

A. SCOTT June 4, 1935.
TOOL ATTACHMENT Filed Sept. 15. 1930 Afef/4me gpy-r INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented June 4, 1935 unirse i STATES PATENT OFFICE TOOL ATTACHMENT Arthur Scott, Cleveland, Ohio, assignor to The Cleveland land, Ollio,
Pneumatic Tool Company, Clevea corporation oi" Application september 15, 1930, serial No. 481,875 9 claims. (c1. 9F48) This invention relates to a tool for usejin combination with a pneumatic or uid cperated'hammer. It has to do more particularly with a tampnecessarily limited thereto.
Tamping tools now used with fluid operated hammers, due to the reciprocating action thereram, thus causing a deleterious eiect upon the moving parts. This is due to the fact that the conguration of the tool causes the jacent the stuing box, into which the entrained abrasive is thrown. Moreover, the means customarily used in attaching the tool to the end insusceptible to fracture.
Another object of my invention is to construct a tamping tool which is sturdy of structure, economic of manufacture and insusceptible to undue deterioration.
Further objects will be apparent from the foland Whereinz i Fig. 1 is an elevation partly in section of a pneumatic hammer With the preferred embodiment of my tool attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a plan View of my tool.
means which I preferably use tool to the reciprocating ram.
With reference to the drawing I have shown in Fig. l a pneumatic hammer of the usual type,
i comprising a cylinder l0 and a sturing box il,
shown' in detail, lower lend thereof integrally constructed in the is adapted to reof as at I3'. will be, hereinafter, referred to more in detail.
The tamping tool i 3 is hollow, and has a body portion i I4 of a frusto-spheroidal form having an inwardly. tapering surface as at l5.
become imbedded into the loose material at the this reason, I a spheroidal sur- 'Ihe upper and lower Walls of the hollow tamping tool I3 are centrally bored as at 23 and I 8 and are adapted to receive the insert H5` which is the body portion vin It is possible in the above described construction to form the insert The 4means which I preferably use I ing the faces of the tool will be thrown outwardly therefrom, and that the construction of the tamping tool adequately provides for the reception of the downward blows exerted upon the body portion of my tamping tool, and insures against breakage or fraction.
I claim:
l. A butt for backll tampersY comprising a body portion formed with a striking face, a frustospheroidal hood extending upwardly from said striking face, and a stem extending from the upper portion of said hood to said strikingface formed with a piston rod receiving tapered socket.
2. A butt for hackll tampers comprising a circular body portion formed with a striking Vsurface, a convex hood extending upwardly from Ysaid striking surface, and a piston rod receiving stem connecting the upper portion of said hood with the central portion of said striking surface.
3. A butt for backiill tampers comprising a circular body portion formed with a striking surface, a convex hood extending upwardlyfrom the marginal edge of said striking surface, and a piston rod receiving stern within said hood secured to the upper portion thereof and the centra-l portion of said striking face.
li. A butt for backll tampers comprising a hollow body portion the forward end wall thereof constituting a striking face, a convex hood extending from said striking face, and piston rod receiving means comprising an insert formed with a shoulder engageable with the upper portion of said hood for limiting the movement of said insert toward said striking face.
5. A butt for backll tampers comprising a hollow body portion with the forward end wall thereof constituting a striking face, a convex hood extending from said striking face, and piston rod receiving means comprising an insert centrally located within said hood formed with a shoulder engageable with said forward end wall.
6. A butt for backiill tampers and the like comprising a hollow body formed with a striking face, and a piston rod receiving member within saidV body Wall thereof exceptfor its end portions rigidly secured to the upper and lower wall thereof. '7. A butt for backfill tampers and the like comprising a body portion formed with a hollow core, a stem formed with a piston receiving socket, said stern extending through said hollow core from the upper to the lower wall of said body portion, said socket being closed from said hollow core.
8. A butt for backfill tampers and the like comprising a hollow body, the lower wall thereof being formed with a substantially flat surface constituting the striking face of the butt, a stanchion within said body extending from said lower wall to the spaced relation with the Vside wall thereof,\and a piston receiving socket formed within said stanchion. Y
9. A butt for backfill tampers and the like comprising a body portion formed with a hollow core entirely closed from the exterior of said body portion, and a central portion extending into said hollow core formed with a piston rod receiving means leading to the exterior of said body portion.
