Claims.

Hitherto the fore mud guards of automobiles have become soiled and scratched or chipped while the engine has been undergoing attention or repairs by reason of the mechanic bearing 5 against or over the mud guard and placing tools etcetera thereon.

Now this invention has been specially devised in order to provide an improved protector and tool supports for application to the fore mud guards of automobiles whereby the former will be protected and handy supports are Within convenient reach of the mechanic thereby preventing the mud guard being soiled and/ or damaged and expediting his work.

The improved protector and tool supports'for application to the fore mud guards of automobiles comprises, a body consisting of a frame, on the top thereof a rigid shield or cover formed to the longitudinal contour of the mud guard preferably with a lining of protective material such as felt upon the underface, and a side disposed to fit between the bonnet wall and mud guard, the frame having a tail piece at the rear end of the body adapted to be secured to the running board, a diagonally disposed support at the front end of said side, and a longitudinally extensible support at the near or outside of the forward end such as a vertical stationary tubular member with a telescopic lower member or foot and means for holding said member at desired extension to suit varying automobiles, on the forward end a shelf to support a tray or tools, or such end may be formed to a tray for the purposes stated, and upon the exterior face of the side a trough like tray which may be formed integral or removable for receiving and supporting nuts, parts, or, tools which are being manipulated or used by the mechanic, the device being constructed to right and left designs to fit upon the mud guards at such sides.

And in order that the invention and a practical application thereof will be readily understood the same will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which;

Figure 1 is a perspective of the improved protector applied to the right hand fore mud guard of an automobile,

Figure 2 is a fragmentary prespective of the device with a trough like tray formed integral with the side of the body, and

Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective of the device with the side wall of the body adapted for removable engagement thereon of a trough like tray.

a side 5 which latter is disposed so that it will fit between the bonnet wall 6 and the inside of the mud guard 7, is conveniently constructed of sheet metal upon a tubular carrying frame 8 provided with a diagonally disposed support 9 at the inside of the front to rest in the fork between the bonnet wall 6 and mud guard 7, and an extensible support at the outer side of the front and conveniently consisting of a stationary tubular member 10, a telescopic member 11 and a setscrew 12 so that such support may be adjusted in length to suit varying heights of mud guards, the telescopic member 11 preferably being provided with a non slip end either roughened or with a suitable affixture, the body having a tail piece 13 with a clamp bracket 14 thereon and a screw 15 whereby the running board 16 is engaged and gripped to anchor the protector, the cover 4 preferably being lined on the underface with protective material such as felt to prevent damage to the mud guard while positioning the device as the innerside supportis made long enough to hold the cover spaced above the mud guard and to allow for slight variations in heights of mud guards. At the forward end of the protector is a tray 1'7 upon a strutted frame 18 for support of tools and/or material, and upon the exterior face of the side 5 is a trough like tray 19 formed integral with said side as in Figure 2 or removably attachable as in Figure 3 in which construction the side 5 is provided with hooks 20 for engagement by eyes 21 upon the tray which latter is convenient for holding loose nuts, washers, and small tools, and, if desired, may be perforated to permit of the contents being cleaned by removing the tray and dipping it in suitable liquid, or a separate and smaller perforated tray may be emplaced and supported in the larger tray and will be convenient for transporting its contents as desired.

Any convenient devices other than those described for clamping the tail of the body to the running board and for attaching a tray to the side 5 may be used.

I claim;-

1. Improved protector and tool supports for application to fore mud guards 'of automobiles comprising a body consisting of a rigid cover and side, a carrying frame for the body and having a tail piece attached to the running board, a support for the inner side of the frame and an extensible support for the outer side of the frame, and a tray on said frame.

2. Improved protector and tool supports for application to fore inud guards of automobiles comprising a body consisting of a rigid cover and side, a carrying frame for the body having a tail piece attached to the running board, a support for the inner side of the frame, an extensible support for the outer side of the frame, a tray arranged at the forward end of the frame, and another tray formed with the exterior of the body side.

Improved protector and tool supports for application to fore mud guards of automobiles comprising a body consisting of a rigid cover and side, a carrying frame for the body having a tail piece adapted for securing to the rumiing board, at the forward end of thelatter, a support for the inner side of the frame, an extensible support for the outer side of the frame, a tray on the cover, a secondary tray, and means upon the body side for removable engagement therewith of the secondary tray.

4. Improved protector and tool supports for application to fore mud guards of automobiles comprising a body consisting of a rigid cover and a side, a receiving frame having a tail piece, a screw clamp bracket on the tail piece, a support for the inner side of the body, an extensible support for the outer side of the body including a stationary member and a telescopic member, a secondary frame on the carrying frame, a tray on the secondary frame, and another tray upon the exterior of the side of the body.

5. Improved protector and tool supports for application to fore mud guard of automobiles as set forth in claim 4 in which the side of the body is provided with hooks, and means on the last mentioned tray for engagement therewith.
