This invention relates to certain novel improvements in diffused light lamps, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly eiflcient in use and economical in manufacture.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved lamp in which maximum diffusion of light is effected.

The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by r ference to the accompanying drawing showmg the preferred form of construction, and in which:

Referring to the drawing, which illustrates a practical embodiment ofthe invention, the
hemispherical body of the lamp is indicated at and this body has on its interior a reflecting surface having a porcelain or nickel- A plated coating 11.
Fixed in the body 10 so as to extend forwardly toward the open s1de thereof is a tube or cylinder 12 in which is arranged the socket 13 and the base 14 of the bulb 15 associated therewith in such amanner that the bulb 15 1s held approxiinatelyin the center of the lamp.
Socket 13 is connected current supply source.
A reflecting shade is indicated at 17. This shade is preferably nickel plated inby outlet line 16 to a if teriorly and is substantially a frusto-conical section in shape. A lens 18 is attached over the open front end of the shade 17 by means of a retaining ring 19 and screws 20;
A glass insert is indicated at 21. This insert is substantially a frusto-conical section with the smaller end thereof directed inwardly. Preferably this insert is provided with a frosted finish so as to eliminate glare. The front end of the insert 21 abuts the lens 18 and the rear end of the insert is supported by Serial No. 538,816.

In use, some of the light rays will be reflected by the porcelain or other reflecting sur face 11 out through lens 18. Most of the; rays however will be reflected by the surface 11 along the lines 27, against the reflector 17 and thence through the frosted glass insert 21 which, by reason of its frosted surface and the fact that it conceals the metal reflector 17, will eifectively diffuse the rays 27 and minimize the glare of said rays 27.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent to persons skilled in the art that the invention provides an improved lamp which will be especially useful wherever diffused light is desired such as in theatres, for illumi- 7 ing from the spirit of the invention. I,
therefore, do not .wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: g
A lamp comprising a substantially hemispherical hollow body having an open end, said body being adapted to house illuminating means and being provided on its inner side with a reflecting surface, a reflector disposed forwardly of said body, said reflector having its rear end attached to the open end of said body and having an open end, a lens, means for retaining said lens over the open end of said reflector, and a substantially frusto-conical translucent glass insert in said reflector and substantially coextensive therewith, said insert having its side walls spaced from the inner wall of said reflector, and having its smaller end directed toward said body.
